As mentioned in the first thread, pick your five favorite songs from this year. Two will advance to the 80s finals.
The ultimate goal: to see what DTF's favorite number 1 song of the 1980s is.
Here we have the choices for 1989. Many to choose from again, for the last time.
YOU CAN VOTE FOR FIVE SONGS.
-
Collins x2

What an awful year.
Both Phil Collins, Billy Joel, Bad English, Mike and the Mechanics.
-
Yeah, worst year for me too.
Live to Tell, Toy Soldiers, The Look, Eternal Flame and Miss You Much.
Edit: Oops, Like a Prayer.
-
Another Day in Paradise - Phil Collins
Like a Prayer - Madonna
We Didn't Start the Fire - Billy Joel
Rock On - Michael Damian
Eternal Flame - The Bangles
More proof that #1 pop was starting to get really bad. The other years I had to pick songs I really liked and trim away. This time I went through the list and marked none of them as a "like" song. So I just held my nose and picked.
Meanwhile pop songs like the following were out the same year
Tears for Fears - Sowing the Seeds of Love
Duran Duran - I Don't Want Your Love
Guns n Roses - Welcome to the Jungle made a resurgence
Guns n Roses - Paradise City
Michael Jackson - Smooth Criminal
Don Henley - The End of Innocence
How did we get stuck with such crap that year? I guess I had every right to tell my school peers that their taste in music was gawd awful. My Prerogative was just gun in the mouth bad. And it was everywhere.

Satisfied
When I See You Smile
We Didn’t Start The Fire
Only those three are worth my vote, the rest is not that good, some nice songs but nothing that grabs me and a lot of bullshit.
By the end of the 80s I started caring less and less for the charts and the hits and what's hip.
-
When I'm with you. If you haven't heard it, listen to it.
-
The Look
I'll Be There For You
Toy Soldiers
Batdance
When I See You Smile
Eternal Flame could easily have been subbed in for either Batdance or Toy Soldiers.
-
There's only really bad songs on that list apart from one...
...
...
Never thought I'd share my guilty pleasure, but:
I love that John Bon Jovi song!
-
The unforgettable Milli Vanilli... greatest duo on the planet... :tup
-
Mik + The Mechanics
Richard Marx
Roxette
Bad English
Billy Joel

Summed up 1989 right there. Listening to one of my friends tell me how my music just wasn't good like theirs. I responded with "Milli Vanilli and Paula Abdul aren't great music. They don't even write their music. They are entertainers. They are dancers. They are models ..." with the friend only hearing what he wanted to "yeah. They really are super talented." That was pre-Milli faking it discovery.

You're also using popular music as good music. There are plenty bands from this era that are great just not popular.
-
Ugh, definitely not Phil Collins or Milli Vanilli.
I went for:
The Bangles - Eternal Flame
Billy Joel - We Didn't Start The Fire
Bad English - When I See You Smile
Prince - Batdance
Bon Jovi - I'll Be There For You
-
Paula Abdul having two number 1 hits in the same year is kind of an embarrassment, even by pop chart standards. I get that her music has nice catchy beats and hooks, but her voice sounded too nasally and child-like (and not in a good way).
-
I know you are taking the top 2 from each year, but there are SO MANY GOOD SONGS that are being left off :lol maybe have a consolation or runner up round and take the top 5 of those and make it an even 25 or something? I don't know...
-
Honestly, I was thinking of taking the top three or four from these years that had a ton of number 1s. Had I see how many number 1s there were in the later 80s, I would have said that from the start. I doubt anyone will have a beef if I do that.

Like a Prayer
Wind Beneath My Wings
Satisfied
When I See You Smile
We Didn't Start the Fire
-
Advancing to the next round:
We Didn't Start the Fire - Billy Joel
Like a Prayer - Madonna
When I See You Smile - Bad English
Note: a 3rd song was added from this year because there were 30+ entries.
