There's always a first time. I've done a top 50 Dream Theater songs, a top 50 albums and now it's time to embrace another one of these DTF traditions: the roulette.
This is so exiting. I'm a guy that doesn't actively search for new music, I just let things go naturally, if you know what I mean. I'm also younger than a lot of you guys, and so naturally I know less stuff than most of you, so I'm extremely pumped for this roulette.
As far as my tastes go, I think I'm really able to like anything. There are two or three things that I just can't stand:
- House music. Kill it with fire.
- Poppy love songs. Can't stand them anymore. My dad listens to the radio all the time, and every SONG IS A GODDAMN LOVE SONG. There are good love songs around, and I think that the best ones are the ones that take the concept of love and kind of expand it through the instrumentation (example: Anathema, Devin Townsend's Epicloud) or just love songs that make you think.
- Extremely extreme death metal. Not a big fan of the mess in this genre. Too much stuff going on, too much aggression and often I don't find any sense in this type of music.
"Now MikeMangioy, do you like growls?"
Yes, I do enjoy harsh vocals. But once again, they have to have sense in the context of the song, otherwise they sound just out of place to me.
-- Alright, now that I've gotten that out of the way, let's see how this roulette will work:
Eight contestants will fight each other for eight rounds of doom and hatred and war. Only one will win though. 5 of the eight rounds will be themed, and three of them will be open. EXCEPT that two of them will be open.
Indeed, Evermind won a bonus because he guessed right my #1 album in the top 50, and his bonus is: you can turn an open round into a themed round, and you can decide the theme. Cool, huh? Evermind, just PM me when you want to use your bonus.
After the last round there will be one extra round, which will consist in a 1 vs 1 round, within the two contestants with most points. Also, themed.
The songs will be rated with a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 10 points. Hey, you might even get extra points because you sent a song by an artist that I don't particularly dig.
And of course, here is the infamous and mandatory banned artists list:
AC/DC

Alter Bridge
Anathema (Weather Systems only)

Indeed, Evermind won a bonus because he guessed right my #1 album in the top 50, and his bonus is: you can turn an open round into a themed round, and you can decide the theme. Cool, huh? Evermind, just PM me when you want to use your bonus.
Hahaha everyone sends power metal. :lol
Just kidding, I'll think of something when it's time. By the way, is the information about which rounds are themed and/or themes themselves kept in secret for now? This kind of info would help me to plan what to send and also what to do with my bonus.

Yes it is, sadly for y'all. I like being mean :xbones
-
Whatever, I'm using my bonus in the last open round then. ;)
-
I was actually joking :rollin
Themes will be revealed once everyone is in. But anyways, as you wish.
-
Don't worry, I'm just really bad with that sarcasm thing after a full day at work.
-
5 of the eight rounds will be themed, and three of them will be open. EXCEPT that two of them will be open.
wat me not understand
-
Because one of 'em is decided by Evermind.
-
three of them will be open. EXCEPT that two of them will be open.
No matter how many times I read it, that makes no sense at all.

It makes sense if you read the next paragraph right after that.
I admit though, I was kind of perplexed at first too.
-
That was my goal :lol
-
Oh I now get it :lol
So can we start sending for the first round or what? Is it open?
-
Again, I prefer to wait for everyone, then reveal the rounds.
-
I'd love to play if you'd have me. I've followed both your lists and I think I may have some cool stuff to introduce you to. Hopefully. If you'll have me. Say you'll have me. I love you.

:yarr I think I'd like to participate as well!

In.
That way you can take revenge on me for my crappy scoring of your songs. :D
-
I remember. I never forget.
-
I remember. I never forget.
Seems like I don't have a chance to win this one. :lol
-
This should be fun. The amount of metal bands in your banned list makes me want to send lots of non-metal stuff, which I will probably do :D
-
Two more persons and this thing starts! Come on, people, I need this.
-
all right what the heck ive got some stuff i can send you
-
If you can handle my roulette laziness, I'll join. I have lots of cool stuff to give to you. If you don't want to have me, then that's perfectly fine either. I'll try to send in time, but the past roulettes I've played in have shown that I can't always do that. It's up to you, though I would like to be in.

OK! Everybody's in now.
Here are the round themes:
Round 1: Openers
Round 2: Open round
Round 3: Strange stuff
Round 4: Open round
Round 5: Gorgeous stuff
Round 6: Evermind round
Round 7: Darkness
Round 8: Closers
The theme of the 1vs1 round will remain secret.
As of right now, you can start sending tunes! First round is "Openers". This means that I would like a song that has that kind of vibe, a song that to you sounds "perfect" to open either an album or a concert. Time limit is eight minutes.
If somebody else wants to join, please do. More songs = more fun. Hey, Elite, if you don't want to be in the roulette maybe the extra person can fill your place? I don't mind having you, but hearing what you said, it's for the pace. I don't know, tell me.

I'll think of something and will send tomorrow. :tup

Sent. Not exactly an opener, but is as good as one. Its also a super-secret, unpredictable choice :hat

Sent :yarr
-
Everyone is in except for Evermind, Sneakyblueberry and Sacul, which actually sent a song that I had already listened to.
Guys, I must warn you, I sometimes listen to artists even if I listen only to one song. That's why I said you should always ask before sending, or hell, even have a second song to send just in case. I know, I'm very inconsistent, and in these cases I don't put the artist in the banned list because, you know, I only listened to that one song a lot of times. But the rest of the songs from that artist, I don't know, and you can send. Sorry for the inconvenience.
-
Sent!
What, Sacul sent David Maxim Micic - Where is Now? :lol
-
OF COURSE NOT

My secret! D:

Sneaky is the only missing person now.

That's because you have terrible taste

So, since there's no trace of sneakyblueberry, I'll just go ahead and start listening to your songs. OH SNEAKY WHERE ART THOU

What, Sacul sent David Maxim Micic - Where is Now? :lol
Actually he rejected it because he already knew this one :(. But 1 w0nt w1th s0me g00d dj0nt

I banned it because I knew he will send it in the first round and listened to it just a few days before starting my roulette. :lol By the way, I didn't like it that much either.
-
I actually quite like it instead. But yeah, it earned a lot of fame thanks to the roulettes.
-
Well in one roulette it gave me a 10/10 - sadly that user stopped logging into the forum. It was the first roulette I managed to lead, even with seneca playing :'(. But the Bizkit and others have liked it so wtf, you ain't gonna stop me!
Unless you ban that certain Kevin Gilbert song too... :neverusethis:
-
Just checking in to say that the results are all pretty ready by this point, but I don't know what to do since there's a missing song. Should I wait for sneaky (which hasn't logged in for like four days) or should I post them and rate his song later in the roulette?
-
Why don't you PM him? Give him a little more time
-
Why don't you PM him? Give him a little more time
I did and yeah, I was willing to give him another couple of days anyway.
-
Sorry dude I've been away all weekend!!! Sending now.
-
It's ok dude. Next time just warn me :lol
Ok, so everybody's in! Expect results later today or tomorrow.

And here we go
Round 1: Openers - THE RESULTS
(https://i.imgur.com/HDQc92y.jpg)
This was a great first round, you guys sent tremendous songs, also from artists that I didn't even hear about at all - and actually, the best two songs are from those artists.
(I'm gonna tell you the results in order of preference, to avoid any type of confusion.)
FIRST PLACE: Web Raider / Nekov - with respectively the songs "The Pattern" by Jolly, and "Hyperventilate" by Frost*
Great job guys, you sent two absolutely stunning songs, for very different reasons. I've enjoyed The Pattern so much thanks to its trick: it's a song that makes you think that it's alternative rock/metal, but then after the second chorus, progginess ensues, and it's so unexpected, but still so coherent to the sound of it all. That's called great songwriting - have that and great catchy vocals with awesome lyrics, and you can see why this is one of the two songs that I've liked the most this round. It got me definetly interested in hearing more.
Hyperventilate, instead, is a stunning instrumental track. What struck me about it is the production, everything sounds so big and dramatic, whilst the song is actually pretty happy and fun. It reminds me a lot of Haken and Ayreon (even though Haken weren't even a band when this came out), and it's the most fitting song for what I meant as "opener". I need to check out this album.
Great job you guys, you both receive 9 points.
SECOND PLACE: Sacul, with "Love Song" by Destiny Potato.
You lazy bastard sent me the song you always send, and then sent a song which has part of Where Is Now in it :lol - but anyways, I already knew a bit of Destiny Potato, and this song drew them to my attention even more now. This literally sounds like a Taylor Swift song written by Periphery. The two styles combined make something unique and fun to listen to, and I'm talking especially about the main riff. That is so groovy. Another cool thing are the sudden blast beats - shivers. The bad thing about this song are the lyrics. "Screw you, fuck you, mmh I hate you - this time for real" - Really? :rollin I mean, I get the whole pop metal idea, but those are just bad. But the music makes up for that.
Gonna check out Lun. 8.5 points
THIRD PLACE: Scorpion with "The Illusionist" by Scar Symmetry
I had already heard a song from SS a while ago, and I've liked it. And infact, I like this song. I think it's a great combination of Power, Prog and Death metal, three elements that are perfectly equal and balanced in the song. The growls sound really evil, and kind of remind me of Mikael Akerfeldt, the riffs are djenty and groovy as hell, and the lyrics are your typical power metal cheese, but not that bad. The only thing that is a bit subpar are the clean vocals, but not the execution (this guy's voice is stellar, infact), just the melodies in general. They sound very typical and unoriginal. But apart from that, this is a really nice tune :tup
8 points
FOURTH PLACE: Shadowninja / Sneakyblueberry with respectively the songs "Dance Of The Manatee" by Fair To Midland, and "Excerpt from 6,000,000,000,000 Miles Before the First, or, the Revisitation of the Blue Ghost" by Maudlin Of The Well.
Two very different songs are tied in the fourth position.
Dance Of The Manatee is a cool alternative metal tune by Fair To Midland, a band that I've heard good stuff about, but never checked out, until a few days ago, of course. This track has an inventive vocal line, that kind of left me surprised and "meh" on the first couple of listens, but then it grew on me, and now I like it very much, especially the chours. One thing I don't like is the bridge. I mean, to me that sounds like a bad version of Disturbed. Sorry.
The long song with a very long title ( :rollin) that sneaky sent, is a beautiful composition by Maudlin Of The Well. I know a couple of their tracks, and they're crazy. But in this song? Not at all - infact, these are 10 minutes of pure peace and calm. Although I can't see it well as an opener (that's why it's this low), it does a great job in creating a beautiful atmosphere. I also noticed that the album is in free download, so I went ahead and downloaded it - will check it out soon.
Good songs guys, 7.5 points each.
FIFTH PLACE: Elite with "Used" by Pain Of Salvation
This is a very weird song. It has a dark/wacky vibe, with rap verses. I feel that there are a lot of good ideas in it, but the things that make it not that great is the first verse and chorus. They both sound very uncoherent to each other, but then the song gets better and better starting with the second verse. It has a chugging guitar that follows the rapping pattern (and that's GENIUS) and then an emotional build-up, which climaxes with a high pitched scream by Daniel Gindenlow. I don't quite like that guy's voice, so that's another reason why this song is low. But I appreciate it a bit, still - not that bad.
6.5 points
LAST PLACE: Evermind with "King Of Errors" by Evermind Evergrey :neverusethis:
You had the chance to resend another song (since I've heard this one, but a long time ago), but you eventually became the King Of Errors :-\
I can't seem to get into this tune at all. To me, it sounds very generic and boring, and also repetitive, with the same keyboard melody over and over again. Pity, because I quite like that guy's voice. Sorry mate, but you kind of expected this :rollin
5 points.
------
So this means that:
WebRaider - 9 pts.
Nekov - 9 pts.
Sacul - 8.5 pts.
Scorpion - 8 pts.
Shadowninja - 7.5 pts.
Sneakyblueberry - 7.5 pts.
Elite - 6.5 pts.
Evermind - 5 pts.

Whatever, sending for Round 2.

Whoops :rollin

Alright, sent one of my favourite power metal songs. Will probably get another 5. :lol
-
Awesome! You should definitely check that album, some really great music awaits you.
Sent round 2
-
Wow, not also do I get a way too low score for that song, but also 4 bands I had on my list to send in later rounds were sent as well in the first round :lol
(Those bands were Jolly, Frost*, maudlin of the Well and Fair to Midland, though only Shadow Ninja sent the song I would have sent from those respective bands)
I'll think about what to send next and will send it tomorrow.
-
Forget the lyrics, f0cus 0n th0 dj0nt ;D . Oh, and that sections from Where is Now? is a common motif in David's music, also appearing first here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sw_v40OhMA).
-
Nice! Glad you enjoyed the song I sent. A number of bands I had considered got sent as well. Thankfully I still have a fairly large list and hopefully they'll score good too :)
-
The maudlin of the Well track works fantastically as an opener as it sets the tone for the whole album, guy.
Glad you enjoyed it, but. x

Alright, got everyone, but Scorpion.

Check again. :D

Yeah, I guess.
Currently listening to the songs, I don't think that there's one song below 6 this round. Congrats :tup

Unexpectedly early results since the song have grown on me on the last couple of listens:
Round 2: Open round - The Results
(https://i.imgur.com/CUE3MZg.jpg)
So, this round was full of surprises. You guys all sent me stuff from bands that I didn't hear stuff from before (except for Evermind and WebRaider), and it was honestly all good! I didn't actively dislike one single song. And also, you sent pretty different things for me, too. Here is the chart!
Here's the chart for this round:
FIRST PLACE: WebRaider once again, with "Forget Not" by Ne Obliviscaris
I tried to listen to Citadel back when it came out. There was a lot of hype about this particular band, and with Citadel being acclaimed "album of the year", I tried to listen, and I wasn't particularly digging it. But then you sent me this song, from their debut, and goddamn is it great.
This song sounds like Opeth on power and black metal steroids. It also reminds me of Agalloch a bit, especially in the first instrumental part. The atmosphere is stunning, and the build-up from acoustic to double bass drums and electric guitars is well written and executed. Great stuff.
This song was actually gonna be tied with other two songs, but since you've sent a piece from a band I didn't dig, you have an extra 0.5 points, good job :tup
9.5 points
SECOND PLACE: We have a tie here!
Firstly, Evermind with a live version of "Imaginations From The Other Side", by Blind Guardian.
I did check out some Blind Guardian before, and I quite liked what I heard, and this confirms it. This is honestly the best BG song I've heard yet: it has a fast-paced tempo, with an adventorous vocal line and one hell of a chorus, which I always sing along with. I also like the concept of the lyrics, and they don't sound too cheesy to me. You were in last place last round, and you managed to recover pretty fastly indeed.
The other song is "Rage Of Despair" by Flaming Row, sent by Scorpion.
Even though its main riff is pretty unoriginal, the rest of the song flows so well that I didn't take notice. It's just a great, fun and catchy piece of prog metal, with lots of vocalists, twists and turns in the bridge, and a great vibe that makes me smile, even though I read the concept of this album, and it's really not meant to be happy. But as Steven says, "Miserable music makes me happy" and so there's that. Reading a few infos about Flaming Row, it seems that it's like a heavier version of what Ayreon is trying to do, an opera with various singers-actors. Sounds great, need to check it out.
Both you guys get 9 points.
THIRD PLACE: Shadowninja with "You Won't Know" by Brand New
I've heard of this band, and saw this particular album mentioned in various top 50s (Sacul I think is one of 'em). It's certainly not the type of music that I would actively search for, but damn, it's great. It's very emotional (hence the genre of the band), but it's an "angry emotional" that makes me rock out certainly. The dynamics are well done, with the quiet parts being slower than the heavy parts. Very cool.
8 points
FOURTH PLACE: Another tie, between Nekov and Sneakyblueberry.
Nekov sent "God's Equation" by Pagan's Mind
This one is a good prog metal song, but that's about it. Nothing really exeptional about it, I think - the groove is great, the riffs are basic, but used in a good way, and the vocal line sounds powerful and inspired by power metal atmospheres. But once again, nothing that really made this piece stand out.
Sneakyblueberry sent "Regular Frontier" by Gatherer
What genre is this? I can't seem to come up with one, and that's strange :lol Jokes aside, this is probably the most intense and chaotic 3-minute piece that I've ever heard. It does the same effect to me that BTBAM songs do the first time I listen to them, in three minutes. In three minutes it goes all over the place, adding to the chaos also a lot of distorsion, especially bass distorsion. It has good ideas, but the flow is not that great to me. Still, it's pretty nice.
The two of you earned 7 points
LAST PLACE: Yet another tie, Sacul and Elite.
Sacul sent "All Is One" by Orphaned Land
This is one of those bands from the Middle East (I think Iran or Iraq), and it treats religious topics. This song particularly is about the concept of the coexistence of three religions: christians, jews and muslims. It's a good concept, but the lyrics are pretty bad. "Who cares if you're a muslim or a jew?" made me cringe. Last time the not-so-great lyrics were saved by awesome music, but this time, not so much, since the music is pretty bland and repetitive, a 7/4 riff over and over and over. Hey, at least it's catchy and fun :neverusethis:
Elite sent "Destination Unknown" by Shadow Gallery
This song is a ballad, and well, the thing with ballads is that they're very hit or miss, from person to person. Infact, a find this a great piece musically speaking, well-composed, and hell, even reminds me of Symphony X, and that's a great thing. But it doesn't really hit me emotionally, so there's that. Sorry mate, you were hoping for a higher score, I know :( - You have potential tho, Elite. I believe in you :metal
6.5 points to both of you

DEAR FRIENDS, IT'S TIME TO HEAD FOR THE STRANGE LANDS - SEND ROUND THREE!
You have to send me strange stuff. Weird music. And it could be any sorts of weird: because of its technical arrangement, because of its vibe, because it is paricularly wacky and fun (hinthint this is my favorite kind of strange) - just whatever you think suits the theme. This should be fun.
-
Good, I'm not in the last place anymore. Will send later today.
-
That is not actually a ballad, but alright, I'll send the most off-the-charts ridiculous thing for the next round.
-

That means 'sent', in case you didn't get it.
-
:rollin
anyways, how would you classify Destination Unknown?
-
Yeah, the first part is ballad-ish, I agree, but the second half really isn't anymore, therefore as a whole, I don't think it's a ballad.
-
Well, I wasn't expecting much more than that so I'm OK with the 7. I'm torn between 2 bands for this round so I'll take some time to decide.
-
DAMNIT.

Round 3: Strange round - The Results
(https://i.imgur.com/Vjnk82G.jpg)
This round was very interesting, and freaking fun. Oh, the fun I had listening to this songs, you have no idea. Each song is memorable for its own characteristics, and it was very varied also in sound. The chaaart:
FIRST PLACE: Elite, with "Ars Moriendi" by Mr. Bungle
Look dude, you're first! You've made it! Told you you had potential. Indeed, I expected Mr. Bungle in this round, as it is a band/project that I hear a lot about on Facebook/Plug DJ sessions, but never eventually given them a fair chance. Turns out that this song is freaking insane. It's quirky, eclectic, goes all over the place in merely 4 minutes, but manages to stay cohesive in its numerous ever-shifting sections. It's practically a fast folk song with dance, metal and god knows what else quick bursts, that make it interesting. Another cool thing is the vocals, Mike Patton sounds really goofy and " fat " in a sense.
9.5 points
SECOND PLACE: Sacul, with "Mbinguni Amina" by David Maxim Micic
Sacul sent me this song from an artist that he never sends in roulettes ever. But this time he sent another song, not Where Is Now :lol - Even if I prefer that to this song, I think this was the perfect fit for this round as it is proggy and djenty, but with folk and operatic influences, and lyrics sung in some sort of unknown language (it's not serbian, I've looked it up), with a slightly creepy atmosphere. But it's so fun and catchy, and pretty addicting too, like the rest of the stuff I've heard from David, either from his solo or from Destiny Potato. Really really cool turn on djent, a "style" that would be pretty repetitive if used wrongly, IMO.
9 points
THIRD PLACE: Evermind, with "Brass Goggles" by Steam Powered Giraffe
As soon as I read the name of this band I was like "STEAMPUNKSTEAMPUNKSTEAMPUNK" - turns out I was right. Indeed, Steam Powered Giraffe are a band with steampunk imagery, and god knows how much I love that style. So, you were pretty lucky with that, Evermind. Add a really cool bluesy/ragtime song about a robot trying to be human, with "La-da-dadada"s and layered barber-shop-quartet-style vocals, this was an instant win. Once again, really fun song, and I feel like I'm gonna play this on guitar to death. :tup
8.5 points
FOURTH PLACE: Nekov, with "Dr. Fluffels" by Electrocution 250
Oooh man, Peter Wildoer plays in this. He's such a cool drummer and person. Yeah, so, reading on Wikipedia, this band attempts to write "cartoon music" with extreme prog metal influences. And that's exactly what Dr. Fluffels is. A beastly instrumental, with a djenty base and lots and lots of solos (even a drum solo :heart ), but featuring that kind of cartoony and familyfriendly-wii-videogame-soundtrack vibe that adds that wackiness to it, and works pretty well. The only thing is that this was not as weird as I thought it was gonna be, but still, it's a real good composition, so that's enough for me :metal
8 points
FIFTH PLACE: ShadowNinja, with "A Tapdancer's Dilemma" by Diablo Swing Orchestra
I was familiar with DSO's type of sound, they're pretty famous for that. This song was OK, fun, but with a creepy turn on the lyrics, even though the vocals are funny enough. But it lacked a bit of the fun that the songs above it have, IMO. But still, it's pretty good.
7.5 points
SIXTH PLACE: Sneakyblueberry, with "Clara" by Scott Walker
This song scared me because of its length at first, then I proceeded to listen to it, and last night I had nightmares. Thanks Sneaky! :rollin
Seriously though, this song might be the creepiest song I've ever heard - It has almost no instruments. It's all scary sounds and electronics, with eventually those creepy violin bursts and vocals. The vocals sound really desperate, and remind me of Lou Reed. From what I've gathered, it's about Mussolini's wife, but I have no Idea, still - the lyrics also contribute the creepiness
A man came up towards the body
and poked it with a stick
It rocked stiffly
and twisted around at the end of the rope - gaah, shivers everytime.
I mean, it was a nice and very different entry, but I wouldn't come back to it ever in history, sorry
7 points
SEVENTH PLACE: Scorpion, with "Silent Film" by Dog Fashion Disco
This was another ok track, which tricks you: at first it sounds pretty normal, yeah a bit eccentric but normal - but towards the end it goes completely nuts, with quick riffs and stops with "oohhs" and "aahs" and "I was just kidding" and all sorts of stuff that made me laugh a lot :lol
Interesting song, but didn't grab my attention enough.
6 points
LAST PLACE: WebRaider, with "Through The Ticket... Across Endless Mountains" by Exotic Animal Petting Zoo
Ouch. After two first places in a row, you've fallen pretty down below, WebRaider. Sorry to say but this song was just regular, didn't find any kind of "Strangeness" to it, and it felt pretty stale nevertheless. Just some regular metalcore, with a slight prog influence - but as I said, it didn't catch my interest at all, sorry :-\

And so
Sacul - 24 pts.
Nekov - 24 pts.
WebRaider - 23.5 pts.
Scorpion - 23 pts.

Elite - 22.5 pts.
Evermind - 22.5 pts.
Sneakyblueberry - 21.5 pts.
Lots of ties, lots of competition! SEND ROUND 4 PALS
Once again, open Round. Send whatever.
Evermind, remember that the next open round is your round, just don't say the theme yet! This is just to remind you.
-
oh ffs I sent a Mr Bungle song and had to change it damn you Elite.
I can't stomach all of The Drift in one sitting, either, I don't blame you. I don't even think I've EVER listened to the whole thing all the way through cos its so unsettling, but it's undoubtedly the strangest music I've ever heard and I feel like it should've won by that alone but what are you gonna do.
last fucking place fuck.
-
oh ffs I sent a Mr Bungle song and had to change it damn you Elite.
Because I sent first! Hah!
Curious, what song would you have sent? Because obviously Ars Moriendi isn't even their strangest, but it's probably their most accessible strange song.
-
I think I sent Air Conditioned Nightmare? I thought that was more accessible but maybe its not strange enough. I remember that blowing my mind first time I heard cos of all the genre shifts.
-
The Air-Conditioned Nightmare is brilliant, nice pick! But basically all of California is. Goodbye Sober Day is nice and whacky as well, but if ou really want the weird shit, you should listen to Disco Volante. The problem with that album is that it's so inaccessible that it's not always nice to listen to, although it does have quite a few fantastic parts.
Also, I'm listening to that Scott Walker song and holy shit, this is unlike anything I've ever heard before.

Yeah you can't really go wrong with California. DV is batshit insane.
Right? Scott Walker is fucking unsettling shit.
-
I'm probably going to listen to Disco Volante today for the hell of it haha.
Also: SENT for round 4!
-
:sadpanda: Had a feeling it was risky to send that song but given what I consider "strange" in music is usually not the same as others. I listen to lots of quirky music so its not so strange to me on the whole.
-
sent, looking forward to my no points
-
Still not the last place! And only one and a half point from the leader, so I just need to get the first place in one or two rounds and here we go. Besides, Sacul has already sent Destiny Potato and David Maxim Micic so he'll probably end up on the last place next round.
I've got a few songs to choose from, will probably send something this evening.
Oh and thank you Shadow Ninja for introducing me to this Steam Powered Giraffe song. :tup
-
Dang. That is one of my favourite whacky songs, I love everything about it. Ars Moriendi is a worthy winner though, I briefly considered sending that one too.
Open... will probably send tomorrow.
-
Cool! There's some wackier stuff in that album but Mr. Fluffles is my favorite, you should give it a try.
Will send later today

Round 4: Open Round II - THE RESULTS
(https://i.imgur.com/GEI5cSW.jpg)
This round, as I've previously stated, was my least favorite. Now, this doesn't mean that I haven't liked the songs or anything, there was just something about it that made me like it less than previous three rounds. But the songs were cool enough, let's see:
FIRST PLACE: A tie between Evermind and Elite
Evermind sent "Saviour In The Clockwork" by Avantasia.
I know a couple of Avantasia songs, and they're cool. This song is no exception to that rule, since it's a really groovy, fast and heavy piece of metal music. The song has two parts, being ten minutes long, the first part is kinda thrashy and features a really great and anthemic-sounding chorus. The second part is groovier and slightly heavier and the flow in the song is awesome. It made me go "yeah" a lot of times.
Elite sent "Suicidal Penguin" by Schizoid Lloyd
He decided to keep the vibes of the previous round in this one, for this is a really wacky but cool song, but this fairly recent band (this from their last year's debut). The thing I like the most is the vocal work. A lot of cool twists in it, and reminds me at times of a funny version of Symphony X. Really cool song, very eccentric, I have to check out the album.
9 points to each of you.
SECOND PLACE: sneakyblueberry, with "Limb From Limb" by Protest The Hero
I've been constantly hearing about this band since I've immersed in the prog territories, and this was the right time to check them out. And, as I expected, they have this mixture of prog, metalcore and overall awesome stuff and real great flow, that stream-of-consciousness styled songs kind of lack. But this had it since the first listen, and it's really a fun track. I love the "she is... SUUUUN" part , and the subsequent keyboard solo/djenty riffing. Awesome stuff.
8.5 points
THIRD PLACE: Sacul with "Anarchy X/Revolution Calling" by Queensryche
This is another classic I need to properly check out, but it sounds promising, even though I wouldn't classify this song(s) as "progressive" at all. It sounds like straight heavy 80's stuff. I don't know if it's just this song or the whole album, but it's what I think it sounds like, really. Even so, this song rocks. Catchy melodies, cool lyrics about social problems, and great fun vibe overall. Cool track, I hear O:M praised a lot, so I think I will check it out someday.
8 points
FOURTH PLACE: Tie between WebRaider and Scorpion
WebRaider with "Glass Faces" by Corelia
This reminds me both of Periphery and some other band that I can't pinpoint. It's a cool song, but it felt a bit generic, admittedly. Very djenty and somewhat catchy, but not that awesome, but still, this band hasn't even got a full blown album yet, so what do I expect, really. Once again, nice but not that much.
Scorpion with "Shellmounds" by Grayceon
This was an interasting 10 minute track, with lots of cool cello parts and a dirty vibe. It had a nice tone, but it felt draggy at times - as for the cello, I always enjoy cello in rock music, as it kinda sounds like an electric guitar and adds texture to the song. With this song's produciton though, this aspect kinda didn't show up to me . So cool ideas but kind of meh
7 points
FIFTH PLACE: Tie again, Shadowninja and Nekov
Nekov sent "New Day Rising" by Von Hertzen Brothers
This was the first straight rock tune in the roulette so far, and while I enjoy this kind of music, I don't think it's the type of song I'd send in a roulette. It has a cool groove, but that's about it, kinda stale. The chorus is ok, also.
Shadowninja sent "Homestuck" by Carne Vale (or is it the other way around??)
This was a surprise. An adrenalinic electronic song with electric guitars. Kind of reminded me of Rammstein, but not the type of stuff I would normally listen to. Not that bad though.

Sneakyblueberry - 30 pts.
Shadowninja - 29 pts.
Elite and Evermind are slowly taking over the chart! I remind you that they were in the last places in the first round.
FELLAS, ROUND FIVE TIME!
It's time for beauty. Send me beautiful, gorgeous songs. This could mean ballads, or songs with a high emotional/energetic power - really anything that you'd define gorgeous. Good luck!
-
Yeah, the song is Carne Vale.
Also sent.
-
Nice! Glad you liked it, you should check out all Avantasia albums, they're awesome. :tup
I'll send something tomorrow.
-
Heh, I briefly thought about sending Eternity Served Cold, but decided against it.
Will send soon.
-
man, i don't understand the love Fortress gets out of all the PtH albums, it's the most bland and uninspired imo. Limb From Limb isn't even one of the better songs on the album, why not Sequoia Throne, or... Sequoia Throne? :lol
-
Nice! Operation: Mindcrime is one hell of a ride for sure - check it out right after the roulette is over. Or even better, right now. Have a taste (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6L5Jo09l7U), please.
Oh, and that album below the Protest the Hero record looks amazing, I'll have to give it a listen immediately :neverusethis:

Nah, Fortress is amazing, but Limb from Limb indeed isn't even close to being the best track on the album. If I would send a PtH track in a roulette I would go with Sequoia Throne, Without Prejudice or Yellow Teeth, probably. Accessible, yet extremely good songs,
-
sequoia throne or skies are the PtH songs I'd choose personally though tongue-splitter is up there too

So between the 9.5 points Ars Moriendi (3rd best song) and the 9 points Suicide Penguin (best song I sent). That does not really compute, I think I crashed this roulette.
I'll take that, and the win for this roulette as well. Comeback time!

mostly it means you either got 9 or 9.5 :lol

Once again, I have no idea what I sent. I should really write this shit down.

Round 5: Gorgeous Stuff - THE RESULTS
(https://i.imgur.com/tpr4apb.jpg)
You guys have outdone yourselves. I'm a sucker for beautiful music, and I asked you to sent me beautiful music, and you delivered beautiful music! Some of these songs flattered me with their soundscapes, melodicness and clever songwriting. Let's see in particular
FIRST PLACE: Shadowninja, with "Varúð" by Sigur Rós
I've known about Sigur Rós for a few years now, but never checked out properly what they do. I once saw a music video on tv, I don't know the title of the song, but the video showed kids going all over cool landscapes and then flying off into the distance.
But anyways, Varúð is... like love itself. The beautiful, scratchy and kind of distorted atmosphere really works amazingly with the sweet vocals of the vocalist, often sung in a very high, but quiet, range. When the song reaches the chorus, my body reacts to it with goosebumps galore, and I have to admit - this is the first song in the roulette that left me completely amazed and made me jaw drop the first time. The final build-up is like climbing towards the sky and then getting lost in space. The description is as cheesy as Ayreon, but at least you get what I mean.
Congrats, shadowninja, you sent my favorite song in the roulette so far.
And so for you, a whopping 10 points.
SECOND PLACE: Sacul, with "White Foxes" by Susanne Sundfør
Being a pop song, this was risky, but I trust you Lucas, and you pay off always well. Indeed, this is another song where the soundscapes take the cake. All sorts of electronic sounds, synth arpeggios (Muse/Devin Townsend-worthy) and beats give the song this mechanical feeling, but it's in contrast with the stunning vocals, provided by Susanne. The chorus especially, has a nice chord progression and also makes me shiver. Once again, awesome stuff and easy to get into, even though this isn't the most simple pop song ever, and that's only a good thing.
9.5 points
THIRD PLACE: sneakyblueberry, with "Marvellous Things" by Eisley
I am in love. With the vocalist. I don't even know how she looks like, but the voice is enough for me.
This is a indie-ish 6/8 song, and the vocals absolutely steal the show. I really love both the vocal line and her voice, her timbre - coupled with beautiful acoustic guitars and a "swinging" type of rhythm, this was instant win. Even though it didn't win the round :lol
Also in third place is Elite, with "The Canyon Behind Her" by dredg
I didn't know this band even by name, but good god, this is good stuff. It's your favorite song, and I can really get why. The beautiful shoegaze-ish guitars coupled with the chorus are stunning, and everything has this "celestial" feel to it. The title of the album is really fitting. The only negative thing are the lyrics, they are a bit clichè, you know "Does anybody feel this way", feels a bit overdone. But the music makes up for it, especially the sudden wacky riff going on after the second chorus, that was amazing :hefdaddy - I really love the outro also, that choir is really well done and I can make out every single voice off of it. Not always that happens, and when the production is that good, I just stand up and applaud.
Good job guys, 9 points to both of you.
FOURTH PLACE: Evermind, with "Pictured Within" by Jon Lord
This is a beautiful ballad by Deep Purple's keyboard man, Jon Lord. He sadly passed away some years ago, and this song has a bit of emotional value per se, but adding the recent events, it's even more emotional now. Nothing to really say about it, good vocal lines, lyrics and really touching at times. Simple but profound.
8.5 points
FIFTH PLACE: Nekov, with "Puddles For Ocean" by Papadosio
This.
IS.
SO.
HAPPY :D
Not exactly "gorgeous" as I intended, but isn't happiness a part of beauty too? Good vibes, summer and sunshine are what come to mind when I listen to this song, and it's really fun each time. Given that it's also in 7/4 it also has that slightly technical side to it, that make it interesting, a thing that this type of songs lacked. So, yep, friggin' fun to listen to and to sing along to. You know, I hate going to the beach, but this must be the perfect beach song.
8 points
SIXTH PLACE: Firstly, WebRaider with "Widower", by The Dillinger Escape Plan
When I first read that you sent Dillinger for this round, I was like "WAT DOES NOT COMPUTE (https://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu8/opraguy/NewestCats/CatConfus.jpg)" - then I listened to it and... you were kind of right. Yes, this has that slight beauty to it, but not that much compared to the rest of the stuff in here. But it's a great song nevertheless, and I would've rated it higher if this was an open round.
Then, Scorpion, with "Snowfall", by God Is An Astronaut
This had beauty, but it didn't connect with me all that much sadly. Beautiful soundscapes, beautiful instrumental, a goddamn fitting title (and beautiful title, too) and great atmospheric vibes, but I don't know why, it didn't work that much for me.
Still, you both get 7 points.
---
Guys, thank you for this round, one of my favorites yet, along Round 1 and 3. This roulette is going greatly, and I'm surprised that I'm not slowing down, the pace is going pretty good. Now that we are more than halfway over, we can start to speculate who's gonna win...
Sacul - 41.5 pts.
Elite - 41 pts.
Evermind - 40 pts.
Sneakyblueberry - 39.5 pts.
Shadowninja - 39 pts.
Nekov - 38 pts.
WebRaider - 37.5 pts.
Scorpion - 37 pts.
Looks like the initial situation, with WebRaider and Scorpion leading, is now completely the opposite, with Elite and Evermind almost on the lead, and Sacul sticking to the first place for the second round in a row.
BUT LOOK
IT'S EVERMIND'S ROUND
He has decided that you have to send a power metal or an hard rock song, with a time limit of 5 minutes. Am I right, Ev? (dat short name)
-
Nope, you're wrong. ;)
The theme goes like that. The players have two choices (the second choice is for the people who don't listen to hard rock and power metal at all). You have to either:
1) send a power metal / hard rock song
or
2) send a song from 70s
The time limit is 5 minutes indeed.
Here's the original quite from my PM:
And it also makes a nice contrast with the gorgeous round, so, here we go. Two themes for the players to choose (it's actually three, I've combined two into one):
1) Send a song from hard rock or power metal genre
2) Send a song from 70s
But just so you don't have to listen to lots of awful music, I'd like to set the time limit to 4 minutes 5 minutes.
-
Fuck, right, the 70s song, completely forgot about that. Oh well
-
:lol
Anyway, I'm happy with my 8.5 for Pictured Within. Now I've got a kickass song for this round, and Sacul will probably send some 70s stuff because I really doubt he can go with the power metal thing, I just have to hope you won't like his tune.
Sent!
-
A power metal song, right? Let's see what we've got...
I'm glad that you liked The Canyon Behind Her, it's a beautiful song indeed :heart
-
Or a song from 70s! Thought you'll be sending Wishbone Ash there, man.
-
I told you, that band puts me in a super good mood :D
Evermind, you should change your nick to "Evilmind" :lol
Sent some awesome power metal
-
Totally got this power metal thing on lock, js.
-
yep sigur ros is greeeaat. Valtari is a really underrated album too.
-
Or a song from 70s! Thought you'll be sending Wishbone Ash there, man.
Ssshhht, don't spill the beans!
-
This would be my dream round :lol
-
This would be my dream round :lol
You're definitely going to appreciate the tune I've sent. ;)
-
:sadpanda:
On the bright side, I won't be having trouble with the theme this round. Sending soon.
-
No shame losing to Sigur Ros by half a point ;)
Will send some sweet 70s tune.
-
I just need Scorpion, Elite and Sacul and then I'm ready for the cheese.
-
Will send some sweet 70s tune.

Oh, sorry for not digging some cheesy powah metal  . Now if you'll excuse me, I'll continue my pretentious fantasy book :coolio
-
Thank you Evermind, now I can't send one of my favourite power metal songs ever because it's 5:13.
Cuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurse you.
-
Man, you can send if that's the length. Other people have sent longer tracks.
-
Wait, just like that? What did I set the time limit for then? :lol
-
Wait, just like that? What did I set the time limit for then? :lol
When it's question of seconds, I really don't care :lol
Still, if it's 5:47 or something, I do care.
-
Let's maybe say if you send something over 5 minutes, you lose half of the points you've earned so far?
-
This time limit is killing me too :lol
-
Why would you do such a cruel thing with that time limit?
Now the question is whether I'm sending a (way too short) '70s song or a random power metal track.
-
Tell you what, I wanted to set time limit at 4 minutes (because my song is exactly 4:00 long), but Mike didn't allow it. :lol
-
Right, I sent something I'm fairly comfortable with.
-

You're an evil man cat
EDIT: Scorpion's missing and then everyone's in.
-
Wait, I wanted to send a song that was 5:04 and didn't because it's over the limit, this hardly seems fair
@Sacul: You should listen to some cheesy power metal, not a lot but just a little, for fun ;)
-
Alright, I'll resend. But I won't be able to do so until tonight.
-
@Sacul: You should listen to some cheesy power metal, not a lot but just a little, for fun ;)
Nah, I know fun music that's way better than that - sometimes I'd even listen to drone rather than power metal :P
-
It's ok guys. Don't fight over a few seconds of music. Nekov, if you want to send that song, you're still in time - but by tomorrow I gotta have it.
-
Ok STOP now - the songs I have are cool. I'm gonna listen to them, do not resend anything!
This round might take a little longer since I'm pretty busy these days, but don't worry. Results between Sunday and Tuesday.
-

Round 6 - Evermind Round: THE RESULTS
(https://i.imgur.com/Io6cCQA.jpg)
This round wasn't bad at all, but not that awesome either. I didn't decide the theme for it, and as expected, it turned out to be quite interesting but kind of.. I don't know, a bit repetitive under a certain aspect. I expected more variety from you guys given the various choices, but you all gave me power metal, apart from one hard rock and one 70's song. It's okay nevertheless, and I can't complain at all, for it wasn't shitty at all.
Let's see
FIRST PLACE: Scorpion, with "The Temple Of Hate" by Angra
I've heard of this band, but I didn't know that they were actually brazilian. And now kind of italian too, thanks to Fabio Lione and the likes. Also, I see a familiar face on drums (Aquiles Priester) and on guitar (Kiko Loureiro). Overall, this is a very fun, fast and melodic power metal tune, with lots and lots of progressive influences, featuring synths, complicated guitar parts and all that good stuff. It reminded me a lot of Symphony X, which of course, know their shit with power metal influences.
Good song, 9 points
SECOND PLACE:A tie between...
Sneakyblueberry, with "All Men Play On Ten" by Manowar
Manowar are one of those band which I can't take seriously thanks to their image. I seriously laugh when I hear them mentioned. But this song, a hard rock piece, has this great groove to it, and the vocals feel very "strong" in a sense. I really dig this piece, it's also very catchy. Wouldn't have expected it to be this high at first.
...and
Shadowninja, with "The Ghost Of Icarus" by Keldian
This is a great piece that I've enjoyed a lot. It's fast-paced and the chorus is insanely good and catchy. The only thing is that it felt like normal power metal, it didn't have that thing to make it interesting under a certain point of view, whilst the song itself is actually really good. Good job.
8.5 points to all of you
THIRD PLACE Another tie between
Elite, with "White Shadow" by Voyager
Man, I thought that Voyager were prog :lol - But seriously, the only other song from these guys that I know about is totally a different style, and given that this is from one of their first records, they have grown. This one was a little bit too cheesy for my tastes, but it threw a couple of interesting ideas in to keep the cheese from tearing down the tune.
and
Nekov, with "Still I Believe" by Iron Savior
Like The Ghost Of Icarus, this was good and all but it kind of lacked creativity. I appreciate the groove that's going on in the song, but it felt really done-before.
7.5 points
FOURTH PLACE Sacul with "Babylon" by Aphrodite's Child
You were very undecided about what to send, and your decision didn't exactly pay off that well. This is a good 70's track, catchy, quirky, just how I like it - but I feel that with a different arrangement, and if the song was longer, I would've enjoyed it a lot more.
6.5 points
FIFTH PLACE Evermind with "Carnivore" by Trail Of Murder
This suffered the King Of Errors Syndrome, which consists in you sending a song that is really stale and repetitive. In my opinion, of course. But this was definitely more fun and groovy than KOE, so it has one point more :tup
6 points
LAST PLACE WebRaider with "March Of Mephisto" by Kamelot
I really didn't like this one. I think that the atmosphere is kinda off, and the music doesn't work with the lyrics all that well. It felt also really uninteresting to me, I don't know why, but it lacked substance.
5 points[/b
--- I look evil :lol Sorry if I offended you in any way whatsoever guys, but when critiques are needed, they arrive.
Elite - 48.5 pts.
Sneakyblueberry - 48 pts.
Sacul - 47.5 pts.
Shadowninja - 47.5 pts.
Evermind - 46 pts.
Scorpion - 46 pts.
Nekov - 45.5 pts.
WebRaider - 42.5 pts.
This next round fellas, you need to send me dark stuff. I want anything from depressive to creepy. It can be heavy or not, you decide. Just make me shit myself. Or cry a lot, to the point of suicide. I IS DANGER
SEND ROUND 7 GOOD LUCK

7.5 out of a power metal song sounds like a great score to me :lol

-
march of mephisto is great piss off :lol
-
Damn, I can only blame Evermind and his awful theme :lol. Honestly th E only other 70s I could have sent was a 18-min epic, but then there was a time limit, so...
What the hell, time to regain the lead :hat
-
LOL It appears my goal is to finish last place at this point.... :mehlin
THIRD PLACE Another tie between
Elite, with "White Shadow" by Voyager
Man, I thought that Voyager were prog :lol
I thought so too! Don't think I found anything with them listed in the Power Metal genre. I would have liked to send a song of theirs.
march of mephisto is great piss off :lol
Well, "Power Metal" isn't my thing but I thought so too...

Round 7: Dark round - THE RESULTS
(https://i.imgur.com/l1qUejV.jpg)
This round was good - you guys sent equally creepiness/darkness and melancholic stuff. Good job.
FIRST PLACE: Nekov, with "Starless" by King Crimson
King Crimson always fascinated me. I know a couple of their tunes of course, but never bothered exploring them fully - even though I know that I would really like them. This song is proof of this, in fact I've loved it instantly. Starless starts out with this jazzy and emotional vibe, it's fairly quiet. Then it goes through this build up, based on a dissonant bass riff, and this is where the creepy part starts. Once it builds up enough it explodes in a fast jazzy solo part, to then end with an epic vibe.
This track was the most varied out of the 8 tracks of this round, and I think it's one of those who captured the "dark" vibe I asked for the best.
9.5 points
SECOND PLACE: Sacul, with "Lunacy" by Swans
Swans always frightened me in the first place. When last year everyone was crazy for To Be Kind (their latest album), I went ahead and tried to listen to it, but my mind kind of imploded along with my sanity, so Swans was an instant nope for me. This song though, is catchy and creepy, and also relatively short, and it leaves a strange kind of mark in your head once you listen to it enough times. I love the build up to it and the calm release in the end.
Good job Sacul, you provided some nice LUNACY
LUNACY
LUNACY
LUNACY
9 points + 0.5 points because I didn't dig Swans. So 9.5 points.
THIRD PLACE: Shadowninja with "Katy's Song" by Red House Painters
The best "sad" type of entry. A really good ballad full of feels. That's pretty much all there is to say. I love the dark vocals and the laid-back beat, and the outro is also goddamn good.
8.5 points
FOURTH PLACE: A tie between
Elite, with "Street Spirit (Fade Out)" by Radiohead
I love the vocal line in this. Strange because I really don't line Thom Yorke's timbre, I find him really tiring to listen to. But this song is fairly cool, and I expected a little bit more when you said it's the "most depressing Radiohead song", but what the hell, it's good.
Sneakyblueberry, with "Sleep And Dream" by Battle Of Mice
Talking about vocal lines, this is creepy. The vocals in here freak me out, but admittidely they are a bit annoying. Otherwise, this is another one of the songs that caputred better the "dark" vibe.
8 points
FIFTH PLACE: Scorpion, with "The Morning Never Came" by Swallow The Sun
Nice death/doom metal song. It has an Opeth vibe in the beginning but then everything sounds more ominous and menacing than Opeth. I really like the concept of the lyrics, and I think that it flows good enough - The thing is, I prefered some other tunes to this one, but this is good.
7.5 points
SIXTH PLACE: WebRaider, with "Voice Of The Soul" by Death
I like Death. Never really got into them, but I like their style. But this is not their usual style, infact, this is a 3-minute acoustic instrumental. It does a good job in creating a sad vibe, but that's about it - I would've sent something longer and more interesting, but not bad at all.
7 points
LAST PLACE: Evermind, with "Fear Of The Night" by Absolute Priority
It feels bad giving a band from my country the last place, but the truth is: this does not fit at all in what I asked you, Ev. I know, the concept is kinda dark, but the song just wasn't for me. If you had sent this in the previous round, I would've gave you a 7, but you picked the wrong round and so I'm sorry, but
5.5 points.
--- And there we go. The roulette is practically done, one more round left!
Sacul - 57 points
Elite - 56.5 points
Sneakyblueberry - 56 points
Shadowninja - 56 points
Nekov - 55 points
Scorpion - 53.5 points
Evermind - 51.5 points
Web Raider - 49.5 points
---
Ok so guys, this will be the last round with 8 players. The next round is just between the top two. So, with that, I ask you to please blow me away with some good closers, under 15 minutes in length. Just like the first round, anything that you feel that closes an album or a concert really well. Good luck with that!
-
Well, I almost don't listen to the creepy dark stuff. Whatever.
Shame you want the closer, I had a nice song in store, but it's not the closer. I'll send it as a bonus then. :lol
-
But! I wasn't allowed to send Swans, yet you accepted Sacul's entry? HOW
-
Sacul just sent Swans before you did, simple as that.

:victorydance:
I'm not sure why you haven't listened to King Crimson yet but if you finally decided you should do it be aware, there's between 3 and 4 very distinct eras (at least to my musical ear).
First 2 are more classic prog rock, 3rd era is weird, more 80's sound somehow but still very much prog rock and the last era is a more modern sounding prog.
"ITCOTCK" through "Islands"
"Lark's tongues in aspic" through "Red"
"Discipline" through "Three of a perfect pair"
"Thrak" through "The power to believe"
Also sent last round, let's see if I can score another winner and catch up with the guys on top
-
Sacul just sent Swans before you did, simple as that.
let them both send the same artist, then :lol
-
For the sake of variety, no thank you :millahhhh
-
k, that's just really dumb then.
btw two songs from one artist when you're gonna have 64 songs total by the end of the survivor doesn't really harm variety much at all
and any good artist is gonna have two songs that sound pretty different from one another

All your points are valid but my roulette, my rules :corn

Yup, I knew you'd dig it :hat. Btw, just out of curiosity, what song did Elite send?
And that's a great KC song Nekov, well played.
Thanks! I thought about Epitaph as well, but Starless is just so freaking awesome
-
I need Elite and then I'm good to go! Man, that was fast.
-
That's what she... nah, forget it.
-
Btw, just out of curiosity, what song did Elite send?
I sent 'I Love You This Much' from Soundtracks for the Blind
And that's a great KC song Nekov, well played.
Yes, Starless would have been amazing to send this round as well :lol
Alright, I'm looking at my options and sending soon! :tup
-
I sent 'I Love You This Much' from Soundtracks for the Blind
Damn, you've got balls, man :lol
-
The goal was to send something dark and scary though, right? :lol
-
Oh you would have totally won the theme, but maybe not earned a lot of points :lol .
That's a great Radiohead song tho.
-
Everybody's in.
This round smells glorious.
CAN'T WAIT
-
Share your playlist!
-
Let's share the year your song was released in!
Mine is 1987, which should give everyone a good idea about what I sent. :lol
-
Mine is 2012, fairly recent
-
2009.
I actually thought you might send some Nightwish, Evermind. Ghost Love Score is a good closer :|
-
Wait, Nightwish wasn't banned? Oh well.
-
More power metal? Really guys?
-
Ghost Love Score isn't power metal though.
What I sent is totally power metal. :lol
-
:lol
-
2009, with an amazing closer to an amazing prog album from a band that, surprisingly, wasn't banned :hat
-
My god, did you send the same band again? :lol
-
My god, did you send the same band again? :lol
not me
-
I was referring to the fact that you sent a song from 2009 as well as me. Anyway, I think I know what you sent :)
-
94 or 95? Mid 90s anyway.
-
How's the listening going?
-
Farily well. Expect results either tomorrow or well... tomorrow :lol

Everybody would win then.

Round 8: Closers - THE RESULTS
(https://i.imgur.com/HM6e87M.jpg)
This roulette ends with a BANG, this round was filled with an amazing, varied and colorful round. You guys have done a great job, these are all good songs!
FIRST PLACE: I really couldn't decide which was better between the two, so the first place is a tie, what the hell
Sacul, with "Hybrid Times" by Riverside
I once checked out Second Life Syndrome, but it was a total distracted listen and I didn't pay attention to it. Turns out, that Riverside are awesome! Or at least, this song is. It's pure prog goodness, every influence possible is in here, from Dream Theater to Yes to even modern stuff (I hear a bit of BTBAM in the vocals). This is a fun track, with cool vocal lines and riff ideas, and it really flows great, it doesn't sound like 11 minutes at all. I seriously can't wait to check out the other stuff from these guys as they seem right up my alley.
Nekov, with "Summer's Glory" by Alcest
Nekov, you've been doing great lately! This song is really beautiful. Melanchonic, but joyous and it's very atmospheric. Alcest is a band that's relatively known in my area because they did a concert nearby last year, but I didn't ever check 'em out. Ouch, I regret. This is a great incentive. This song is sung in french of course, and talks about summer, and it fits into my life because i'm truly living one of the best summers of my life right now. Amazing, gives me shivers towards the end thanks to that choir of "OOOOOOOH" - and it's for sure a great closer too. I see it working as that.
Both of you guys receive 9.5 points
SECOND PLACE: Shadowninja, with "The Frame" by Oceansize
I often see this band mentioned on here and on FB communities, but I never really understood how they sound like - now I get it. Post-rock-ish prog, eh? This is another really beautiful song. It's a powerful build up to the outro which is pure bliss, and it sounds like a perfect closer track. The vocal line is very sad, but the music is kind of uplifting, and I love the various layers of stuff. The only thing is that it drags a little bit, but it's damn good nevertheless. Good job.
9 points
THIRD PLACE: WebRaider, with "Continuum" by Amplifier
Well, it took you sometimes, but you finally sent a song that I enjoy a lot after quite a few meh rounds. Continuum is a great alternative-sounding song, with a lot of attention to sound production and that dark catchiness to it that makes me enjoy it so much. A cool thing about this track is that it's dynamically unstable, being quiet most of the time and exploding with noise once in a while. I like that, it gives it an interesting touch.
8.5 points
FOURTH PLACE: Elite, with "New Day" by Karnivool
This australian band always interested me, but I never actively listened to their stuff. Turns out that they aren't as heavy as I imagined, and they're catchy as hell. I just love the vocals in this piece, but it feels a little bit stretched out, and I can't manage to pay attention to it the whole way through. Still, it's a good tune and I see it being a good closer.
8 points
FIFTH PLACE: Evermind, with "Halloween" by Helloween
I like Helloween, so you did a good thing sending this tune. It's the longest tune in the roulette, being 13 minutes long, and my complaint is that it has just too much singing on it. There are lots and lots of good ideas in it, but I could've used somewhat of an instrumental break or something, otherwise it drags. And this does drag, even though I enjoy it enough.
7.5 points
SIXTH PLACE: Scorpion, with "Finality" by While Heaven Wept
This is another one of the emotional and atmospheric songs in this round. It's my least favorite because, well, the lyrics are a bit clichè being a love song, and I think that it's kinda boring, honestly. The vocal lines are veeery long in delivery and the rhythm is fairly slow (yeah, it's doom metal after all), and it just puts me to sleep and/or doesn't make me want to listen to the song that much. Not that bad though.
6.5 points
LAST PLACE: Sneakyblueberry, with "Dream Brother" by Jeff Buckley
Jeff Buckley, I was a bit surprised when I saw that you sent this guy, I didn't see it coming. This song is fairly dark and creepy, and presents oriental vocal lines. It didn't catch my interest at all though. Buuut I think it might close an album well, so I have a bit of mercy for you :lol
6 points
--- This means that the final results are
Sacul - 66.5 points
Shadow Ninja - 65 points
Elite / Nekov - 64.5 points
Sneakyblueberry - 62 points
Scorpion - 60 points
Evermind - 59 points
Web Raider - 58 points
Now, under normal circustances, Sacul would've won the roulette. But there's one more round left, and that's just between him and Shadow Ninja.
Before unveiling the theme of the final round though, let me take a minute to thank each and everyone of you.
Even if you're in the last places, each one of you has sent at least one or two amazing tracks, that left me stunned, and I'm just gonna check out the rest of that stuff. So guys, thanks a lot for playing and it's been tons of fun!
OK, now for serious stuff:
Sacul and Shadow Ninja: you need to send me an epic. I mean like 15+ minutes song. And your points don't matter anymore. The winner of the roulette is gonna be the winner of this very round, so, whichever of you sends the song I like the most, earns the crown
Good luck and make me dream :metal :metal
-
I almost sent Hybrid Times as well
-
So close :getoffmylawn:
Anyways, this was fun and I'm glad you enjoyed the music I've been sending you. Thanks for running the roulette as smoothly as you did
-
Geez, you two guys were so close that when I added up the scores I said "Ouch, goddammit!" out loud.
-
I almost sent Hybrid Times as well
You played great in this roulette anyways :tup
Can't you just let me win? It's not like I'm tied with our ninja mate :lol jk, I'll take my time (pun intended) to send for this one.
-
LISTEN TO BUCKLEY AGAIN UNTIL IT CLICKS FUCK.
Seriously, Grace is one of the greatest albums of all time, but it may take a bit of time.
Thanks for having me in the roulette, its my first one. Hope you got some new favourite sounds out of it :tup
-
Dream Brother deserves far more than 6 points, yes.
-
Dream Brother deserves far more than 6 points, yes.
this guy gets it!
-
Jeff Buckley and WHW are both awesome. Glad you liked Oceasize, btw. I will do some bullshit "considering" and then send the first song I think of. :P
-
Hybrid Times is a god-tier song omg.
THE FRAME IS A GOD-TIER SONG TOO AAAHHH
New Day is not one of my favorites off that album, the lyrics are kind of banal, should've sent Set Fire to the Hive or Deadman or Change or something
-
Since I never seemed to really lock down on your tastes, I'm actually surprised at not coming in last. While frustrating at times, this was fun, and thanks for having me and listening to the crap that I sent. :tup
-

Deadman is my favourite Karnivool song, bit I didn't think it would be a good 'closer', while New Day is Karnivool's fan favourite and the song they almost always close shows with. It's also more accessible than Deadman or Change. SFTTH is good, but definitely in the bottom half if the album and I don't think it would be a good closer either.
-
SFTTH is my favorite tbh :lol
and yeah Deadman isn't a closer, I forgot that was a theme round
-
Alright, I'm not in the last place, so it's alright. Thanks for running this and letting me join!
-
Well, I think I did my best choosing an epic. Sent.
-
The final round listens shall commence

Be sure to give our songs a hell lot of spins ;D

more than one listen of my song can be harmful to your health just fyi
-
And so.. it has come to this!
Sacul and Shadowninja had to send an epic tune, 15+ minutes long. The problem is: they both provided either a strange and unsettling tune or something that's not totally my thing.
Shadowninja sent "The Girl Who Was... Death" by Devil Doll, a very interesting-sounding project by "Mr. Doctor". I read that this band was part of the italian prog movement from the 70s, even though it's half italian, half slovenian. This 39 minute tune, which is the only track in the album (of course by the same name) is very quirky and creepy. I kind of liked the atmosphere, with those sudden bursts of hard rock riffing - but the song has two great things that don't make me appreciate it: the structure. It feels very inconsistent and very tiring and long to listen to, and one thing that makes an epic awesome is consistency, meaning that if it's 20 minutes long, it doesn't feel like it. But this song really drags. Also, the vocals. At the beginning I thought that they were gonna be like that just for the intro, but nope, the whole 39 minutes of the song are filled with these annoying vocals. Singing surreal lyrics. So, this had potential, but I ended up not liking it enough.
Sacul sent "For - Peter - Toilet Brushes - More" by Nils Fraham. I heard about this guy but I didn't really know what he did. Turns out he does ambient/electronic, and while I can appreciate those elements in music, this wasn't the best choice to send in this round, seeing it is 16 minutes long. But you said epics weren't your thing so I get it. It's 16 minute of keyboard basically, and it is a pleasant listen, I have to admit. Ambient kinda makes me space out, but this sounded kind of fun.
It's been hard to decide between these two mainly because one is more towards a style of music that I like, but I don't like it enough, and the other one is usually not my cup of tea, but I had a good time listening to it. But that's the point.
At times, The Girl Who Was...Death was nearly frustrating to get through, but that didn't ever really happen with Nils Fraham. As soon as I realized this, I had a clear winner in mind:
SACUL

I mean, it makes sense. I've made a list of albums/artists to listen to after each round, and 5 out of your 8 entries are in that list. I've already listened to two (Destiny Potato and David Maxim Micic) and I'm digging them a lot. You've been one of the best players, and I also think this is your first time winning a roulette - seeing that you sign up in every single roulette, finally your efforts have been payed up. Congrats Lucas!
-- As for Shadowninja, dude, you were so close - you were on the right way genre-wise, but had you sent something less pretentious and long, you would've won. Pity, 'cause you were a damn good player too, especially when it came to mellow stuff.
Once again guys, thanks for participating! This has been fun. And now I'm up to go exploring further the stuff that you've sent. Once I listen to every album I might even do a little review thing in here. :metal
-
more than one listen of my song can be harmful to your health just fyi
Very true.
Congrats Lucas.
-
:o
Oh. Fucking. Yes. :metal
It's great not to lose in the final round :lol
Thanks for running this roulette, mike, it's been quite fun. And props to Shadow Ninja, for playing so well on it :tup
PS: Guess I'll have to check out that Devil Doll song since you seem to send them in every roulette so you can't send them in mine
(https://omgface.com/veryhappy/happy%20cat4.jpg)
-
Congratulations Sacul!
I wouldn't use the term "pretentious" to describe Devil Doll, though. Pretension implies pretending to be something you're not, whereas Devil Doll is pretty much just what they are, which is really fucking weird.
-
Yeah, I guess that with "pretentious" I meant "bombastic and big and over the top". But still.
-
That is a fair assessment, and not one I disagree with.
I should point out, though, I didn't send you the song just to troll you, I actually do really like it. I'd be lying if I said I didn't expect your reaction, though. :lol
-
Nice play gaiz.
-
That guy sending you the O:M song from Queensryche deserved the win, was that Lucas?
-
Seriously, the task is to send an 'epic' and you guys send those two songs? :lol
-
That guy sending you the O:M song from Queensryche deserved the win, was that Lucas?
Yup it was me ;D . Thanks.
Seriously, the task is to send an 'epic' and you guys send those two songs? :lol
Well, he asked for a long song with multiple parts, and I gave him that :P . It's not even prog, but there was no need for it, so fuck the system.
-
Seriously, the task is to send an 'epic' and you guys send those two songs? :lol
Dude, there is no way my song isn't epic. Besides, I figure he's heard a lot of prog epics. But he hasn't ever heard anything like what I sent him. :lol
-
He's pretty right.
