Really jealous of that Yuengling.
Just had an Imperial Stout and our home brewed Belgian Quad. It's called, " I Pulled My Quad".
I do the same. Great way to try a lot of new stuff. What's a mix-a-six run you? Here, it's usually around $12.
Mmmnnn.
Ten Fidy.
Haven't drank in a bit and this week has been pretty rough, got home from work now and made myself my standard drink for home, vodka and club, not very "manly" but a healthier drink choice and it gives a good buzz without having to drink so much.
3rd for me drinking a black cherry cider.
Again you can follow everything I drink beer wise on untappd (love that app)
That McKenzie's black cherry cider is damn good stuff, Splent. It tastes like black cherry soda.

I am ashamed to admit that I drank a Coors Light recently. Although, I will say that pouring it out of the can and into a solo cup did slightly improve the flavor of it.
I had a couple of Heinekens last night but was too exhausted to take my laptop out and post it. Heineken doesn't taste the same anymore. After drinking so many different obscure beers, going back to Heineken made it taste like a Budweiser.

Heineken tastes so much better in Amsterdam than in the US
I don't know why, for some reason, that reminds me of the scene in National Lampoon's European Vacation, where Clark's on the plane, asks the stewardess for a Coke and she asks if he'd like it in the can, and he says "Nah, I'll take it right here."

It's all personal preferences really. I'm into big beers with high alcohol. There's a craft to those. Some ipa's would blow your mind but you have to travel to get them and I do.
I had Stella once and didn't care for it, but that was years ago. I should give it another try.

Johnnie Blue has a special place in my heart. I was never a fan of scotch until my early 30s when someone poured me some - so, it really is the scotch that popped my cherry. For years, that's the only scotch I drank. Then I deviated, and started drinking single malts about 6-7 years ago. When it comes to a blend, I'll only drink high-end... the $40-$50 bottles are shit. I can't stand Gold or lower (Platinum is probably, but I've never tried it), Ballantine's, J&B, Chivas Regal or anything like that. There isn't much of a selection in the liquor stores here, so I usually just keep it safe, and go Blue when it comes to a blend... at least when I'm drinking it straight. Mixed drinks - I'd only use a blend.

How do my fellow Scotch drinkers feel about the heavy, peaty, single-malts like Lagavulin and Adbeg? I'm slowly coming around to them but I'm not sold yet.

Jack and apple juice complement each other surprisingly well. Doesn't sound like they would go good together, but they totally do. I use light apple juice, even.

Have not had those labels. There's only a few scotches that I've met that I wasn't much a fan of. Bowmore and Macallan are my two favorite brands, so I'm not too experienced with real heavy peaty stuff.

Having one of their winter lagers right now. Still far from being in my wheelhouse but doesn't gross me out anymore at least. Got their holiday mixer 12er with Boston lahguh, Spahkling ale, Old Fezziwig, Chawklit Bawk, and Hawliday Pawtuh.
Can't say I ever have. I tend to lean mostly towards cab sauvignon.
I used to just buy french standards for years, Cabernet, Pinot Noir, Merlot etc. But I've been branching out a bit, with some Italians (I love Chianti) and the Chilean Carmenere, which is really spicy and sharp-ish but not acidic.
I tend to stick locally (Niagara). Mrs.jingle and I will go on a tour every 12-18 months. There are 93 wineries in about a 50 mile radius just 90 minutes away from us. We've knocked off 23 of them so far.

I work for the PLCB (Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board) and had not heard of this variety, but upon a product search, we have a good handful of regular stock Carmeneres:
Anakena
Anderra
Arboleda
Concha y Toro
Las Parcelas
Santa Rita
Terra Andina
Veramonte
Vina Calina
Walnut Crest
Any that you're at all familiar with?
:lol Would've thought I knew at least one by name. I guess they could be the same wineries selling over here in Europe (or even The Netherlands), but under different names, I don't know. It's more a brand thing, I guess. The Arboleda sound great, though, did a quick search on them.
I'll be in soon.

Find a bar that has it and ask them if you can try a sample. Most places are pretty accommodating about that kind of thing, if you only keep it to one or two.
I did the same tonight at our local haunt with Great Lakes' Christmas Ale. I've done that there many times, actually, so yeah, give it a shot. If they're at all familiar with you, that'll obviously help as well.

I think they went from being barely a cut above Sam Adams to being amongst the best of brewers that you can find at most stores over the last decade. Sam Adams is okay and occasionally very good as Joe noted a few dozen posts ago in this thread but even the worst of Sierra Nevada is pretty decent and their top stuff is quite good.
I remember on my 22nd birthday when I was barely familiar with them, my friend Phil and I played a couple games of pool where loser had to buy the beer. I won those two games and he decided to end that wager immediately. At least an hour later (maybe longer) he noticed me being burfday durnk and, like a shark erroneously thinking he smelled blood, decided to reinstate the wager and this time wanted to play with the understanding that loser buys a pitcher for the winner. Unfortunately for him, my pool skills usually follow a bell curve of sober being a very decent player, buzzing slightly dulling my skills, and drunk making me not care about missing and making me at least be as good as my sober self if not better. I ran him right off the table in just a few turns and then he found out the bar didn't have pitchers of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale but only singles so he had to shell out $14 to buy me 4 individual pints of which I only drank 1 or 2. Later that night he had to walk my corpse like body back to his apt. and I fell asleep during a sitdown piss for an hour. Then (according to him and our other friend Jason) they had to chant "Josh, put your pants on!" for a while to no avail so I'd at least be decent when they rescued me from my porcelain captor and eventually threw me on the couch to sleep it all off. Unfortunately for them, I never got alert enough to fulfill my end of the bargain and they had to see my dong.
Holy shit. What the hell did it miss Josh?! :lol
I miss, I misspelled I came.
This group definitely needs to come up with a cocktail to commemorate Palmeiras. I'm thinking, it absolutely must begin with Tequila.

Over recent years, there has been some confusion about the difference between fresh and wet hops. While it may seem like semantics, to us it’s an important distinction.
Wet Hops are un-dried hops, picked and shipped from the growing fields within 24 hours.
Fresh Hops are the freshest dried hops to come from the fields, typically within seven days of harvest. Over 90% of the world’s hop harvest happens between August 31 and October 31, and these hops are used throughout the calendar year. Can hops possibly be the same on November 1, one day after harvest, as they are on July 25, nearly one year after growing in the fields? The answer is no. We think of hops like dry kitchen spices—the flavor of thyme or rosemary right after the jar is opened is far more intense than it is six months later. The same can be said for hops. There are ways to control the way hops age and to reformulate and readjust as some of the aromas fade, but there’s nothing like the magic of the first bales of hops as fresh as can be. That is the stuff dreams are made of!

PS, I can't remember if I ever mentioned it to you, back in August of 2013, we went to see Black Sabbath in Holmdel on a Sunday night, and spent Friday afternoon through Sunday morning in Staten Island. I didn't really know you back then, otherwise we'd totally have met up for beers.

I do recall you mentioning once before that you were in Staten Island but, like you mentioned, we didn't really know each other back then. Were you at a bar on the island or at a friend's house? Well, I know you're not TOO far from me, so it's not like I can't drive out to see you play one night.

We stayed at the Comfort Inn on Wild Ave, literally right next to the north mound of Fresh Kills. Actually, we got there on Saturday. Took Victory Blvd. all the way to the eastern end, then over to the SI Ferry. Took that to Manhattan, stayed for a bit, got some pizza, came back, went to Joe and Pat's, then back to the hotel for the night. Next day, we went to Nunzio's, then over to fish at Ocean Breeze Pier, then on to Holmdel. So we didn't really get to do a ton. It wasn't nearly as "big city" as i think I expected it to be.
Hoist! It must be done!

BTW, since I'm a newcomer to the thread, what's EB's martini recipe?
And yes, lets hear this recipe. My father loves martinis so he might like to try it.
I started a thread about Martini's a few years ago. Those who like them listed their favorite formula. Mine and EB's were pretty close but he insisted a ratio of 1 part dry vermouth to 5 parts London dry gin was the best. We both agree that a lemon twist is the only thing that should touch this nectar.
I did a side by side comparison one weekend and decided that Barto was correct (as usual...bless his heart)
I know my father has vermouth, but I'm not sure if he has gin. He usually makes his martinis with vodka. The gin sounds better though.
I know my father has vermouth, but I'm not sure if he has gin. He usually makes his martinis with vodka. The gin sounds better though.
No, a drink made with Vodka and Vermouth is actually a "Kangaroo". Any proper alcohol snob (similar to a prog snob, only sexierPlease refer to the chat thread.) will tell you that a martini is made with gin only!
Had a few white rssians today. I like white russions. So yeah I'm in.
And for the record, I'm sexier than any alcohol snob on this forum...except maybe King.
Sazerac #2!
Sazerac #2!
I have no idea what this means, but thanks
Well, in Dad's defense. The Bond movies (the books never made this mistake) made the "Vodka Martini" a popular misnomer. In fact, it's so much part of the modern drink culture's lexicon that no bartender (except perhaps me and El Barto) would correct someone and say, "No, you want a Kangaroo."
Blackfloyd will tell you that something with Vodka, Kahlua, Chocolate Sauce and a splash of virgin PJ is some sort of martini as well. He's wrong, but he's so adorable that I just nod and clap my hands with delight.
Sezerac is very similar to an Old Fashioned (the cocktail) but rye is often substituted with cognac. I'm pretty sure they don't put an orange slice in it either. Bitters are a must.
Right millah?

My question is do you go to the liquor store everyday or have you been stocking up for awhile? I only ask because you have a unique selection

Grey Goose is fine stuff if you drink straight or on the rocks. If you instead make mixed drinks, you can save a ton of money with Monopolowa. The best booze, for the money, on earth, IMO.
I actually prefer the taste of it to Grey Goose

Gearing up for having some fiends over....
Breckenridge Vanilla Porter is awesome. Hoegaarden's very good too but never even priced within an area code of what I'd consider fair value for a beer of its quality level. Same goes for Stone. Glad to see more people around here getting Abita too. They've been the biggest craft brewer in Louisiana since I was born.
Purple Haze is pretty good from what I remember. Might have had it once since 2000 since I had a traumatizing weekend where I got some puke containing it on the shoulder of the one shirt I had with me that weekend and I could vividly still smell it despite rinsing that patch of fabric thoroughly.
I think Turbo Dog ain't doin em any favors as far a brand strength goes. Always tasted dark for the sake of being dark to me instead of being dark because they roasted the malt to improve its flavor.
Abita gets a lot of love up here...you can find Purple Haze or Turbodog very easily, and the better places will have 4-5 varieties at any given time.I've never had the beers, but they make a delicious Root Beer

There are a few different go-to's:
-2 oz buffalo trace, 1 oz macro-brew sweet vermouth, couple of dashes bitters, bourbon-soaked cherry (easy drinking, a little on the sweet side)
-2 oz woodford, 1 oz fancy sweet vermouth, couple dashes butters, bourbon-soaked cherry (more complex, less sweet)
-Perfect Manhattan...2.5 oz woodford, 1/2 ox fancy sweet vermouth, 1/2 oz dry vermouth, bitters, lemon twist (definitely drier & more complex)
Also, there's this, from my wife's blog:

Millahh, going with your first Manhattan option, the sweeter one. Buffalo Trace with M&R Rosso vermouth. Nice, but I should probably go with the second one. That'll probably be more to my liking.
Hey has anyone tried The Trooper beer? I wonder if it's worth ordering
Hey has anyone tried The Trooper beer? I wonder if it's worth ordering
It was good, but it's very basic. I don't think they tried to do anything to give it a distinct flavor, but something that has mass appeal, at least that is my opinion since it was good, but not something that stood out. More of a novelty.
In.
millahh's perfect Manhattan recipe with High West Rendezvous Rye as a substitute for Woodford.
Rye is a little...coarse(?) for this recipe, me thinks. It lacks the character of a good bourbon so maybe the concoction that includes a full ounce of sweet vermouth would be better. That being said, I mostly prefer dry cocktails so I'd be more inclined to use this same formula but with Angel's Envy bourbon (I don't have Buffalo Trace or Woodford in the house at the moment).

Yeah, I'd image rye plus the dry vermouth might a little like sandpaper. The dry vermouth balances the bourbon sweetness nicely...as does the full oz sweet vermouth with the rye.
Bill, I know my bro is dying to have a collaborative beer. He's really the mad scientist and we'd love to get you up to NH.

The Angel's Envy worked out just fine!! It seems a shame not to drink that stuff neat, but hey, it's all in the interest of science. Right?
Is the Angel's Envy bourbon good? I *love* the rye, but I've heard some less than great things from friends about the bourbon.
In. millahh's perfect Manhattan recipe this time with a proper measure of Maker's 46. Mmmmm, strong & smooth, with an initial bite (that is closer to a playful nibble) and a caramel apple finish. The lemon is a nice twist, millahh.

I really like it, King!
I just got back from the bottle shop (where I was shocked to find it prominently displayed in the Scotch aisle of all places) and poured about half-a-finger.
It's strong, and the first sip gives a good alcohol wallop. But then, some oak flavor rises, followed by a dark bitter nut flavor. After a few sips, everything mellows and the sweetness starts to come forward. Very caramel scent to it.
This would be very good cut with a little water and ice. It makes me want to rush out and buy a cigar too.
Sitting at home enjoying a Miller right now.
In. Drinking Heady Topper, Vermont's finest.
Yeah, I don't think it's in regular production from them, not sure though tbh as I'm not that knowledgeable about whiskey. I don't drink a ton of liquor, but that Midwinter Night's Dram and Angel's Envy rye are my jams.

And the KBS isn't cheap either.
Thanks, Coz. I missed this place.
Kids in bed, Fine Oak poured.
Speaking of nothing in particular, I need to restock my Glenmorangie 10 and my Fine Oak. Dangerously low for my preference.
Anyone had Jameson's Caskmates? A neighbor poured some and it almost didn't taste like whisky...it wasn't strong at all, but still tasty.
I'll admit I've never had the Macallan 10...I love the 12-year, it's an awesome standby, with a little more complexity than, say, Glenlivet 12. The 15 Fine Oak, however, is on another level. Equal parts smooth and complex, rich and subtley deep. To each his own but it's currently my absolute favorite.
I'm not a fan of smoky Islay malts, so Laphroaig isn't a favorite, though I will not discount its merits. If you like that, try Talisker 10. I describe it using one word: volcanic. It tastes like it was filtered through obsidian.
Heinekens are always a good choice.

I got the Glenmorangie 10 (port finish) recently, and have been quite enjoying it. As for the Macallen, I've got a 10, and I'm not completely sure I see the appeal...a bit astringent without a ton of personality. How's the 15 compare? Also, much to Podaar's dismay, I'm also enjoying a Laphroaig 10...the smell of which will clear the wife from the room.
In, half a bottle of chianti and two martinis. It's been a rough week...
Unskinny Hop. My brother's new IPA be we don't galaxy hops and made with a yeast called brettois.
I'm knee deep in it guys. At a bar having a Hill Farmstead event for NYC beer week. There was a two hour bottle share at the bar before they opened. I've had at least a dozen HF beers, plus a couple randoms from other breweries. I also have fried chicken and sausage gravy and biscuits. Today is a good day.Continued drinking where I was until a little after 2, and then went to another bar having an event with a couple NYC breweries. After a couple glasses of IPAs and coffee stout, it was time to head home and eat leftover pizza. Now sipping on some Balvenie 12 as I get ready to call it a night.
I'll write Aultmore down to try. Sounds tasty.
Having some Oban 14 now. About as smoky as I like, thick and rich.
Might pour a little Glenfiddich 15 or 18 later. My wife got me a variety sampler for Christmas that I haven't broken open yet. 'Fiddich is another one of my favorites.

Indeed. It's pretty well-balanced, a little less heavy on the chocolate than some other chocolate porters. That's not a positive or negative, it just differentiates. But it is pretty good.

yeah, it's pretty deranged, but amazing. My scalp is still tingling, 30 minutes later. Original recipe actually called for lightly breaded fried oysters, but we're still a little skeptical on them (though we did up a proper oyster po' boy a couple of weeks ago, and it was righteous).
I'm so glad I hated oysters til 10 years ago cuz it really demonstrates the absence makes the heart grow fonder dynamic since I fucking adore them now. I wanna make that omelet with the oysters but also with a sauteed mushroom/garlic/onion mixture too and then end it all cuz there's nothing to live for after that.
Literally 4 times as much sugar as hot sauce?
Is the sauce just hot sauce and powdered sugar? Seems like it'd make a paste. Tell me more please.
Thanks brah. I can borrow some hot sauce from my step dad cuz he has an arsenal of shit that puts Tabasco™ to shame. I say this as a Louisianian too so I'm not hating on my home state's product due to bias but rather from a childhood rife with Tabasco consumption.

About three years ago now, someone gave me a bottle of The Macallan 30 Year Old Sherry Oak Single Malt, as a very special gift. This usually goes for about 3,000 a bottle. I decided it would remain unopened until my son got married, or I had grand kids, or maybe when my grand kids got married. However, a friend of mine just got out of the hospital on Friday. He'd been there for 93 days following complications from surgery to complete his eradication of cancer. In about an hour, me and this bottle are headed to his house for 10 or 20 drams each. I'll keep some for other special occasions too.

To be fair, how drunk were you already when you took the shot? :lol
Straight from the bottle, it isn't all that great. Usually anytime I'm gonna have a glass of bourbon, like for sipping, I'll get some ice in, pour the bourbon, then let it sit for a while. Like an hour. Lets it aerate and allows the ice to melt. All of the great bourbon flavor and bite is still there, just a little more mellow than straight out bottle strength. Knob Creek definitely needs this sort of treatment.
In other news, tacos tonight, so I'll be making jalapeno margaritas.

Ooooh, I love absinthe! Is it the good stuff or a toned down American brand?
It's Absente (which is at least made in France)...though my only frame of reference is Lucid, which seems to be aimed at college kids with too much disposable income...it's 1.5x the price of Absente, and lacks the nuance and balance. Absente was the recommendation from the barkeep at the hole-in-the-wall absinthe bar in New Orleans where we first had it.
What's your preferred one?
From my understanding, I thought absinthe was known to be disgusting a drink not actually have mind altering properties. My only personal experience was in Vegas when I saw the show Absinthe, they were selling a drink that was a fruity vodka cocktail and they said it was topped with real absinthe but even though I bought and enjoyed the drink, figured it was just a gimmick. I wasn't totally sure you could even buy legit absinthe on the US.

I'm not that knowledgeable on the rum front, and I didn't buy the bottle myself, but looking at it, it's amber in colour, so something in the middle maybe? I've seen white rum, it's not that, but I've also seen darker shades around (If you can't tell already, I'm pretty bad with this :P ).

This is good, indeed. At least you have a good choice that isn't Bud Lite or Miller Lite. Good God, it's one more reason for me to hate sporting events. Or concerts in sports stadiums.
You do have to hike to find good beer choices, and they're usually not REALLY well marked. There could be an 8 foot high BUD LITE sign at every station, and the lone Goose Island station has a little 8.5x11 hand written sign.

I have a crowler of Lagunitas' Born Yesterday, I'm working on soon.
I just acquired 3 bottles of The Macallan 30 Year Old Fine Oak yesterday for $1500.00 each. I plan to pour a large dram for myself, and another for my son, every Christmas Eve starting with this one; until it's all gone. I'm all about having as many special traditions with my kid as I can. I hope someday some of them stick. I'd love to know that someday someone will tell his son, "My great grandfather, Tempus, used to do this with my grandfather every year too."

Of course, I have daughters, neither of which are old enough to drink yet, and even when they are, I doubt they will lean toward Scotch.
So since I must now wait...I poured a glass of The Macallan 18 this evening, went out to the gazebo, built a fire and enjoyed this amazingly mild weather, while I smoked an Arturo Fuente Shark 77. I have to admit, I'm not a huge cigar aficionado. I can usually count on 1 hand the number of cigars I smoke by myself in a year. However, we entertain a lot, so I have cigars for our guests and friends, and I get cigars quite often as gifts. That Shark was really very nice and chocolaty. It went well with the Scotch.Nice! I haven't smoked that particular cigar, but good cigars always go nicely with good Scotch.

I've been searching for a beer that I had about a year ago. It was a sour and when I say sour I mean holy fucking shit was this thing sour. I don't remember the name though, which makes me sad.
In trying to find it, I did manage to track down The Bruery's Tart of Darkness which I thought was ok, if not what I expected.
I think my favorite sour I've had which is also probably my favorite beer at this point is Duchesse de Bourgeon.
If anybody has any sour recommendations (flemish reds, berliner weisse, etc) throw them my way.
Edit: Also forgot to mention I discovered Three Floyd's Icelandic Pants of the Dead which is so damn good.
You won't be disappointed with the Glenfiddich, I don't believe, unless of course you come to realize that you simply dislike Scotch whisky. Glenfiddich is one of my favorites and I've had that combo flight sampler before; quite nice. It's an accessible malt, not very peaty, that's pretty clean and smooth. If you find it to be more than your palette enjoys, especially for a relatively inexperienced Scotch drinker, I'd recommend trying something a bit lighter and more fruity, like Glenmorangie 10-year. It's quite florally and light-bodied, easy in the mouth and very soft finish.

This is not opinion. This is fact!
I keep a bottle of Glenmorangie Port Cask Finish on my top shelf for when bourbon drinkers decide they want to have a Scotch with me. I have never, ever, had someone who likes whiskey (even if only a little) not make yummy noises when sipping on Glenmorangie!
I didn't even see it. BTW, I don't like Steak so who am I to complain about one's taste.
Chad is an avid scotch lover. I'm more of a bourbon, Irish whiskey guy myself.
In. Jameson Cask Mates, neat.
I've brewed quite a few beers with different styles of hot peppers.Oh nice! I've also recently started brewing beer with my room mates. Here's a picture of our recently made blond beer:

I'm really curious how that tastes, even though I'm not a big fan of dark beer.

I have a random assortment of beers that have been sitting my my fridge for awhile (beers people left from my fall bbq), lately I've been making a dent in them.
How's that Glenmorangie?
How's that Glenmorangie?
I like it, though I am discovering that I prefer sherry finish (and I've had the Glenmorangie sherry finish, so it's a reasonable head-to-head comparison). Of that general category, I think Macallan 12 double cask is my favorite. I'm a sucker for caramel and dried fruit notes.
Also...there's a second location of Taphaus opening, a two minute walk from my apartment. this could be bad for my liver.

Still need to check out the original. Beers soon?
In. Sipping on the last of my Macallan 15 now before I call it a night. Was out earlier at a bar for a friend's birthday. Pretty sure the bartender hated us because I had half the group drinking their winter sour (rye whiskey, ginger rum, lime, maple syrup, apricot preserves, angostura bitters, and shaved nutmeg) by the end of the night, and I guess it's a pain in the ass to make.
Yes, green tea is very good for you but wrong thread :lol

How's the 15 relative to either of the 12s? I've thought about it, but I have a bit of a conceptual challenge with a $130/bottle booze...

Out of all the lite domestic beers, miller lite is my favorite. It's the one beer that I feel like I can drink non stop since it's not terrible and light enough that you can just keep drinking and pissing it out.

Miller lite is so nasty. I actually like Miller Genuine Draft. That's as light as I'll go. That or Yuengling.
MGD is tolerable. This shit is awful, but at least it isn't Coors Light. Also, I'm not paying for it.
I usually drink two types of beers each night. I'll always have a light beer, and then a heavier one. Right now I have Molson Canadian and Bass Ale. Usually I have Moosehead, but they were out of it.

It's been a dry week for me. The last drink I had was a glass of Knob Creek at my brother's house last Sunday for Ostara.
I haven't heard someone mention Ostara in a decade. My old roommate is an Asatru Gothi and I kinda lost track of him around 2005 or so. His wife was wiccan, I believe.

Johnny Walker Blue
Started drinking Thursday night and had some hair of the dog Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Booyah. The festival had a pretty crap selection of beer, so I stuck with Goose IPA.
Nick has a heavy pour. Just ask Doc.Or ask me.
Hef and I are in with The Macallan ... 12 years old. Neat.

Had my first beer in awhile tonight, just a miller lite so nothing special.
God bless whoever invented the shower beer. I've taken two showers today, and both were improved immensely by a can of pils from Cambridge Brewing Company.
Joe, I saw on Twitter today that Sunset declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy. I think it said something like 5 million in debts and 500K in unpaid taxes.

Nice. My sister got me a beer holder that suction cups to the the shower wall for Christmas. Pretty handy, as it's sized for cans but will also work with a stemmed glass if I'm drinking one of my beers on tap.

Bourbon barrel aged IPAs are a waste of both good hops and good bourbon barrels. Brewers who make them should feel bad about themselves.

EDIT - Never had it until I bought my first bottle two weeks ago. If I had the money, I think I'd be toying with the idea of becoming a Scotch guy. But the price point on decent Scotch is a bit beyond my means. But this is really good.
Scotch is worth the investment (imo). At least once treat yourself to a 12-year old single malt. Put it on your birthday or xmas list.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt
Nose: Very fruity and thick. Rich notes of lemon, nectarine and apple. Spices.
Palate: Fresh and balanced, vanilla. Boiled sweets, very creamy, tiramisu, toffee.
Finish: Quite long, gentle, malty and very fruity
It's amazing how I can get completely shitfaced on liquor and wake up feeling perfectly fine but I have two beers and I feel like crap the next day. I'm gonna stick to vodka and tequila from now on.
I had the weeping willow wit and it was damn delicious
Almost ordered a Carolina Blonde at the bar I was at tonight. Ended up going with the Weeping Willow Wit from Mother Earth instead. Now back at the vacation house and sipping on a Lux (hoppy rye ale) that I snagged from Bissell Bros while I was in Portland last week.

So, my girl wanted to take me to a winery last Sat night because she got a good deal on Groupon. Pretty cool. Tasted an interesting variety of wines for a decent price. Once that was done, we happened to be in old town Scottsdale (AZ) and walked around looking for places to drink. First place, I ordered a rum & coke. Small plastic cup. 7 bucks and weak as all fuck. Next??? We stop at another dive with some country band (they were pretty good). Rum & coke in a glass. 6 bucks and a little stronger but not much. "Ok babe, we're outta here." Let's go home and make some real drinks at a fraction of the cost." Yeah baby!! We watched DT's BTFW on Blu-Ray and she loved it!

Yeah. The barrel aged is of course much more bourbon-y, and it's 12% instead of 10%. Also a little bit pricier... I prefer the original but the one was all I needed for the evening.
Yeah, 10-12% will buzz you pretty good. Sadly, the one and only time I tried Victory at Sea (the 10% version), my sink enjoyed it more than I did. I’ve heard it’s such a good beer though, so maybe I got a bad or stale batch? Not sure, but not in any rush to try it again. Hands down the worst beer I’ve ever had... :/

Hey ROOBZ! Thanks so much for the kind words <3 I'd love to friend you on Facebook since I tend to check that daily and it'd be great to be able to stay in touch. I'll PM you my info. No bet lost. Just a whimsical sequence of posts. Iirc, you're from South America and follow the NBA but don't follow the NFL so you might need a lil background to make sense of this. If you want clarification, I can do so in like one paragraph. Anyhoo, just read Stadler's post in this link and then I reply to it 2 or 3 posts later.

Just looked this up on beeradvocate.com. I'm intimidated by the score, 4.6, and size of the bottle. I'm just gonna guess this is at least $25 for the bottle but I won't be surprised if it's considerably more. Also, what's the abv? Lastly, what kinda notes is it packin, how's the carbonation, mouthfeel, etc.?
Lol I can't figure out why I thought you were from South America. But thanks for all the other info.

Anyway... Just the usual assortment of quality craft beers tonight. Are any of you beer drinkers? Anyone into 'craft' beer? It's been a veritable explosion of quality over the past few years. I've been a legal drinker for exactly half of my life now (turned 42 on Friday), and I remember the dearth of good beer when I first hit the bars in the Twin Cities. Now, there are more taprooms here than I can keep track of. An embarrassment of riches, I suppose. Prost!
Long Island Iced Teas tonight because I don't know how to keep my sanity with a good clean healthier diet

Is that your specialty? You'll have to make me one then
Definitely planning on making a booze run maybe first thing after getting to Atlanta although I'm simple, I pretty much only drink vodka anymore.
I need the clear liquids. The darks like whiskey don't sit well with me. That's probably the polish in me or something. I did enjoy jack or rum with coke but I stopped drinking soda a long time ago so that's another reason why I just stick with vodka clubs. Although for a concert, I'll usually start with a red bull and vodka (yea, that's worse than a soda but I like the effect). As a Polish man I agree. My hard liquor is a clean cold shot of vodka, chaser: ice cold club soda.
Who’s drinking claws?

Alright, single malt folks... If you had to have four to keep on hand, what would you choose?
I always keep four on hand, and currently have Lagavulan 16, Caol Ila 12, Macallan 12 (double cask) and Macallan 15. The Caol Ila is about kicked, do trying to decide what should take it's place. Not going to directly replace it, as the Lagavulan covers the same ground, only better, and I can get it for ~$67 now. So, anyway, I'm looking for ideas.

My stock single malts are usually Lagavulin 16, Bowmore 12 (or Laphroaig 10), Highland Park 12, and Glenmorangie Lasanta. I find that gives me a great range of Scotch's from challenging to easy drinking.
I've never cared much for the Speyside single malts. I don't understand the devotion to Macallan...it seems pretty lifeless and expensive to me. Especially the Macallan 15 triple cask ($125.00 in my neck of the woods) and some of the Glenfiddich expressions are ridiculously priced for the flavor. That being said, I sometimes buy Glenlivet 12 (when it's on sale) in the summer and I'm feeling like a scotch and soda.
For blended, I like to buy Johnnie Walker Gold when it's available here. I think it tastes every bit as good as the JW Blue, but about 1/5th the price.
I've been trying to up my game for non-scotch whiskeys lately. Bought a Kamiki Cedar Cask Japanese whisky, and Redbreast 12 Irish to add to my top shelf. I'm looking for an interesting and flavorful Canadian whiskey. Any recommendations from you folks would be appreciated.
I got one of the Maker's Mark bottles from one of their small runs last year (~$75), it's pretty spicy. It's not my go-to, I got it more for my wife so she could have something higher-end while I was having scotch (she far prefers bourbon).

Yeah, my wife will occasionally smell the Scotch I drink and take a tiny sip, but since I generally drink it neat, she complains about the strength of it. Her comfort zone is Angel's Envy bourbon with three ice cubes, a orange twist, and a splash of club soda.

I dig it. From some descriptions I saw, I was expecting a little bit of peat, but I can't find it. Still good, and good to have the diversity in there shelf, just a little different from what I was expecting.
I just put together that Islay scotches are so in brown/green bottles because the phenols are photosensitive. I'm probably a little late to the party on that one.

Compared to Caol Ila, yeah, not so much. I've never noticed a peat note to HP12, but there definitely is a smoky note in the nose and finish...more like a...campfire(?). Still, I find it has a lot of interesting flavors to chase, but none of the more challenging notes like the Islay scotches.
I'd never heard of the photosensitive nature of Islay scotches. I'm pretty sure Bowmore is in a clear bottle, maybe others?

Mostly Yuengling Lager Light and a random IPA here and there, then some Jack and light apple juice towards the end of the night.
Apparently, I've recently come down with a touch of the diabeetus, so I have cut my drinking back from 3-4 beers and a half glass of bourbon daily to drinking only 2 or 3 nights a week. This sucks.

Yes. It indeed is a "usual" pattern that when folks either cannot follow rules or do not like having their opinions questioned that they either leave or are made to leave. In this case, she didn't like that I had a different opinion than she did. The posts are there if you do care to read them instead of making incorrect assumptions.

In.You and I have had this discussion before. We're both traditionalists insofar as martinis go. :tup Have you considered Beefeater for your martinis? It's a whole lot drier than the Sapphire. I keep both on hand, because you need different gins for martinis and G&Ts. I want the aromatics you get from the sapphire in my G&T, and I want the driest gin I can find in my martini.

That said, what can folks tell me about Canadian whisky? It's enough of a different beast that I'm not really sure where to start. Grabbed some Black Velvet the other day for $10. It's .. Interesting. Drinkable in a pinch, but I don't see myself buying it again. At least it tastes better than it smells.

I've been trying out a few boutique Canadian Whiskeys this year and have nearly given up on finding one I like. Due to the adults around me, I kinda grew up with (and are intimately familiar with) Black Velvet, Canadian Mist, Canadian Club, and Crown Royale. None of which are bad, but only Crown is drinkable neat, IMO. Mist isn't bad with soda or water, but Club and BV are really only for mixes, but they do mix very well. In fact, that's become my opinion of Canadian Whiskey over all. You want a Manhattan, an Old Fashioned, or a Whiskey Sour, grab a bottle of Canadian. I think, by and large, they're mainly Rye blends anyway, so that makes some sense.
Macallan 15-year Double Cask tonight, sipped nicely with a good book.
Canadian is not my thing. It's the least regulated of the whiskies and has too much of closing undertone that muddies the flavor. Never been my thing.
Bushmill's is the fire water of Irish. I still prefer ye olde classic Jameson's for my Irish needs. Caskmates is a wonderful line, as well.
Just got home and cracked a shower beer, hop drop and roll.

Been off alcohol for 7 years now as a personal/health choice but still enjoy beer. Check out Athletic beer company. A lot of the other NA beers are IPA which isn't my bag but Athletic has a Golden Dawn and Upside Down that I enjoy. I think they are both golden lagers. I also like Stella's NA, St. Pauli Girl and Becks NAs. All of them are better than the coors, odoulls and Heineken swill IMO.
I also tried a gin alternative (Ritual Proof) this New Years. I used to enjoy gin and tonics so I decided to give it a try. Not too bad and the drinks were enjoyable however most of what I was tasting was the lime and tonic.
In the words of Norm Peterson... "Women! Can't live with them; pass the beer nuts".
