Title: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DREAM THEATER SONG?
Post by: Destiny Of Chaos on December 07, 2014, 05:31:30 PM
Hello everyone. I apologize for starting a poll outside of the Polls & Survivors forum, but at least it's not 13 separate polls :)

Please vote for your favorite Dream Theater song.

The songs aren't in chronological or alphabetical order. The order is based on the divisions from DT the League (a game we play on the Polls & Survivors forum). I'm not predicting that the songs will be voted for in order, but I can say with confidence that the songs in the top 32 will receive more votes than the songs below them.

I've checked the "allow users to change vote" box because I know that one's favorite can change over time. Also, it's handy in case someone accidentally votes for the wrong song, very possible in a poll of this size.

Feel free to use this thread to talk about your favorite song, other peoples' favorite songs, and of course, the obligatory "what constitutes a song" arguments.

This will allow us to see, very clearly, which songs are our favorites. Happy voting and happy posting!

"Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence". It's got length, width, depth, and girth. It's got quantity AND quality. It's got it all. I love all 42 minutes of it and it's absolutely my favorite DT song ever.

Also, PRO-TIP: Use CTRL+F to find a specific song in the list before voting. It'll make it easier to see what you're voting for.

-Marc.

Metropolis was my favorite from the time I discovered the band till the time I first heard Scenes. Home was my favorite from that point until mid-2007.
Then it became In The Presence of Enemies, which it remains until this day, but it has been challenged by Nightmare and IT.

You should have included "can't pick just one" as an option.

How MANY songs-if you know-are on your list?

Those are some cool choices!

Metropolis is mine, and always will be, most likely. But of course, it depends on my mood what DT song I'm most into any given day.

Metropolis  -  Like other folks on this site, could be 5 or more depending on my mood.  I believe that Metropolis defines DT and progressive rock.

It would have been much easier to find songs if it were in album order. And it doesn't give me the option to change my vote.

My motivation in listing the songs like this was so that the songs that will get the majority of the votes can be all viewed without scrolling down.

Not sure why it wouldn't allow the changing of votes.

Is that all of them? It looks like all of them. I swear last time I counted I thought there were 120 songs. I dunno.  :lol

EDIT: I see Where Are You Now is missing. But that's the only one I can notice atm without getting stupidly obscure about it.

Anyway, nothing too surprising so far. Only a few votes in and Learning to Live, Octavarium, Six Degrees, Metropolis and A Change of Seasons are already taking the lead.  :xbones

Oh, and Raw Dog and You Not Me, lol.

LTL.

When I first got into the band, I was more into the heavier side, with Train of Thought being my favourite album. In the Name of God was my favourite track for quite a while, occasionally Endless Sacrifice would challenge it for top spot. Then, when I started getting into Images and Words, Metropolis became my #1 for a long time. It has now been overtaken by Learning to Live and I don't see it changing any time soon.

More seriously : looking at this list, and wondering how the hell it is possible to chose just 1 song ? :omg:

Although 6DOIT is probably the song which best sums up what DT is, I will chose the easy way, by picking ACOS.

Voted for The Count of Tuscany (when I finally located the bloody thing on the list), because while I accept the qualms some fans have about the track (chiefly the lyrics), I still think it showcases the absolute best of this band. Have they written 'better' overall songs? Yes, no doubt. Surrounded, Misunderstood, Learning To Live, Trial of Tears, Home, Speak To Me, Lifting Shadows Off A Dream, Breaking All Illusions...all masterpieces of song-writing. But there's something about TCOT which really hits me deeply, especially the opening and closing 3 or 4 minutes.

In truth though, looking through the list of songs in the poll reminds me once more what an absolutely incredible band Dream Theater is. Such a uniquely strong body of work.

I gotta go with SDOIT. It's too good, and represents (in my mind) all the best parts of DT; prog, metal, melody, epicness, etc...

Depending on the day though 8V, Blind Faith, Metropolis, or LtL could take my vote easily.

Even though it's not my favourite, These Walls is definitely top 20 material for me. :tup
It's such a well constructed shorter structure song, with great riffs (including the keyboard riff), strong melodies, a catchy chorus, a tasteful short guitar solo, and that big outro.
I remember instantly loving that song when the radio edit came out, then being disappointed that it wasn't representative of the rest of the album.

It's one of the first DT songs I ever heard (not the first, that was Octavarium). I think the atmosphere of that song alone makes it stand out among the entire DT discography, even in its own album. Dream Theater at their most melodic.

This is still the wrong way to do it.

Much as Chaos System's threads annoy the heck out of me, his idea was closer to doing it properly.

You do each album but offer two votes. You vote for two songs from each. That gives second favourites a chance to come through.

Also, you do each album one at a time. That way people aren't overloaded with threads and the front page forum at DTF doesn't look like something off of opinion.org.

Once albums are done, you then put all 24 (or so) songs into one poll and ask everyone to pick their top 3 or 5 or whatever. You're funneling it down each time.

Like I said, say Metropolis is everybody's second favourite song but no ones out right favourite. That means itd probably be the overall forum favourite song. Giving everyone only one vote can't reflect that.

I voted Metropolis anyway  :tup

It's not my 2nd favourite. Octavarium is my 2nd favourite. Metropolis is 4th, behind LTL.

Also, if people aren't aware of Polls & Survivors, we need to get them over there and voting this season! Spread the word! Help make this the most decisive League ever! Well, it really depends on the kind of data a person wants. In order to get an idea of DT's most beloved songs, yes, 2 or 3 choices would be needed.
This particular case, what it can determine is the one song that the most people consider their #1 favorite. And then a song that the second biggest number of people consider their #1 favorite. It's a different kind of statistic, but it's still useful... Well, as useful as "which songs to DT fans like" can be.
Title: Re: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DREAM THEATER SONG?

True

To be honest, even my way doesn't work.

Let's say TSCO is the 4th most popular song on Scenes - but TSCO itself is more popular than any song from When Dream and Day Unite.

Yet the final poll would show two songs from When Dream and Day Unite that appear more popular than TSCO.

I'm really not sure how you could construct it other than a league as mentioned.

The other way would be to do this poll but people vote one song off at a time. It'd take forever but - I guess it could work.

No worries.

With this simple poll we can see that right this second,  more participants have Octavarium as their favorite song than any other song.  It doesn't get any easier than that. Sure everyone could hold that Song X is their 2nd favorite song and perhaps it would average out better than Octavarium over the long run. It just boils down to personal preference of analysis. But if more people have Octavarium as their absolute favorite song... then that's good enough for me.

I still think the League is our definitive way of finding the forum's favourite DT song. I know it's long-winded, but it needs to be. Victory is all the more sweeter when it's taken a long time to get there.

I try to look at DT the League as just for fun/entertainment purposes. The P&S forum doesn't see nearly the traffic that the DT forum does.

The one way it would truly work, as I see it, is if everyone participating ranked every single song from most to least favorite, and then figuring out the average placement for each and every song.

If you were willing to curb it down to top 50 lists, then there's a lot of data already out there. We've discussed using it in years past.

Well, if there's a tracker thread, that does make it easier. Maybe I'll analyze the data after all. Although my own list (which was in the original, or 2nd thread) is very out of date, and I imagine the up to date list would be quite different, which is another problem, people's tastes and appreciation for these songs changes with time, so there would still be some inaccuracies.

But it's still probably going to give a better general idea. Maybe I'll just put together a new top 50 for myself, and once that's done, analyze the date from the rest.

The Dance of Eternity..

I've been looking for it, but there's definitely not an emoticon that can express what I feel for this song theme.. This track, this instrumental.. Call it the way you want, for me always will be the best piece of art ever composed.. My blood runs cold every time I hear it.. It makes me smile, brings me peacefulness and strength, and even give pleasure, I must say, every time I hear it.. Yeah, it's almost sexual.. Which actually wouldn't be so far from the meaning of this masterpiece.. :azn: Or, as Virgil Donati would say: "the mother of all pieces"...

All THAT I feel for this DT-so-underrated-material, and we're talking about an instrumental here!.. I mean, if a musical work with no lyrics provides (to someone) all this, then for sure it should be (at least for that someone) a very touching work.. And, you can say it (or think) all the times you want it: it doesn't have any "climax" moment or whatever... but, when I said that a DT song must have a lovely or gorgeous moment to get to like ME?.. Never.. I like their technical stuff.. I like their heavy stuff.. I like their prog and experimental part.. Also their light side.. But, either way, I "like" TDoE that much.. "Like", because I know that's not the word.. I love this track.. In fact, let me put it in this other way, to be more precise and even at risk of seeming insane:

I'm in love with The Dance of Eternity... :heart

Well, I'm also 'in love' with DT in general, as I think many of you are, but I just love this piece so much that it's for me the best they have done.. I do feel almost the same for another songs like Metropolis, TCoT, TGP, all Train, 8V the song, Erotomania, TMoLS, but this one in particularly I've always felt like is very unique and special to me.. The meaning on its own it's extraordinary by itself.. The reminiscences of Metropolis are excellent, clever and very appropriate.. The sounding, the changing in the time signatures, the neatness and beauty of it..

I always had the impression that DT themselves also consider this instrumental to be their best (I mean among their instrumentals, not among the whole songs), because of the choice of make it the backbone of Instrumedley, which I easily believe is their best medley.. And that's precisely the other big reason I'm so fascinated with TDoE: the vast majority of the parts I most enjoy from DT songs are the instrumental ones.. (I listen to bands like Planet X, Freakeys, Animals as Leaders, and, of course, LTE; also, I like Haken and Symphony X, e.g., which, as you may know, have a strong singer presence, but anyway are very instrumental prog bands) I consider JLB to be the best singer on earth, but the kind of things the other guys in the band can make with their instruments are just beyond all magnificence.. In fact, IMO the best SONG from them is Metropolis, and mainly because of the instrumental part..

Let me finish with a quote from Lovecraft's "The Music of Erich Zann":

Quote from: HPLovecraft on December, 1921
... strains I had never heard before; strains which must have been of [their] own devising. To describe their exact nature is impossible for one unversed in music. They were a kind of fugue, with recurrent passages of the most captivating quality, but to me were notable (...) . Those haunting notes I had remembered, and had often hummed and whistled inaccurately to myself...

Yeah, for me, the only thing that pushes Metropolis ahead of it is James LaBrie. But musically, instrumentally, The Dance of Eternity is an absolute masterpiece!  :tup

We should always remember the Arrow Impossibility Theorem when forming rankings. You can't reach a perfect ordering of the songs. By perfect I mean satisfying:

0) 3 or more alternatives (this one has 120)
1) If every voter prefers alternative X over alternative Y, then the group prefers X over Y.
2) If every voter's preference between X and Y remains unchanged, then the group's preference between X and Y will also remain unchanged (even if voters' preferences between other pairs like X and Z, Y and Z, or Z and W change).
3) There is no "dictator": no single voter possesses the power to always determine the group's preference.

And I'm copying it from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arrow's_impossibility_theorem

Scarred.

And it's a no-brainer these days for me. It's not only as epic as DT usually can get, it's a really weird song too. Harmonically speaking, for DT, this is totally out-there.

The intro and outro are really special, and the solos are out of this world. In fact, it's my favorite JP solo. Have I mentioned JLB's second verse already? Good lord.

Awake fanboy here though. For me it's their best record by far. I've always liked it, but it has taken me years to feel this way about it. And for some reason, the intrigue just never ends.

A Change of Seasons

The first DT song still my favorite DT song

"Seize the day
And don't you cry
Now it's time
To say good-bye
Even though
I'll be gone
I will live on
Live on"

I get chills just reading these lyrics

My Top 4:

Finally Free
Octavarium
Home
Breaking All Illusions

These are all tied at the #1 spot for me, but I chose Finally Free for the poll.

The reason is simple. Finally Free is, along with Home, the oldest song of the bunch. Yet it still remains a song I listen to and love.

So, although Octavarium and BAI both have a CHANCE at being as timeless, Finally Free has already PROVEN that it is timeless. Home is a song I do not listen to quite as much as the others, so I chose FF over it.

Home belongs up there though, because it got me into DT.

So, Finally Free it is!
