Who's in your opinion the best DT musician compared to other musicians playing the same instrument?

Mike Portnoy
John Myung
John Petrucci
Jordan Rudess
James LaBrie (compared to other singers)

No Taste and feel?! :S :O x'D

are u for real?

YtseBitsySpider

He's for real.
I agree completely.
Rudess is a gifted piano/keyboard player, but his solos, and much of his contributions..say last 3 albums or so..have a robotic noise maker feel about them. Someone said earlier in this thread that JR is the only person in the world that can do what he does.  True. Why would anyone else want to?

JP still gets my vote.

and my keyboardists......Derek, Kevin and then JR...in that order.

We all know that he can play more complex stuff than anyone else but when it comes to pure emotion and musicality, keyboardists like Richard Barbieri just blow him out of the water.

The problem with JR, is that he has found 3-4 little things that he just does over and over and over and over.

However, when he's not doing those things, he's doing some amazing work that people overlook.

I probably have to go with JR, but I do I do it begrudgingly.  I kind of feel like I have no idea just how good JM really is.  I suspect he could play circles around a lot of bass players that I currently have to consider his better.  Until he actually decides to, he doesn't rank.  I have kind of the opposite issue with JP.  I think he's among the very best, but I think we've seen what he does.  There are a lot of guitarists that can play plenty of things that I don't think he can.   I like Portnoy, but while he's among the elite, he's far short of the best.

As for JR, he probably is the best pianist in rock.  The man has an innate talent that's quite extraordinary.  As a keyboardist, he's far from my favorite.  To be fair, he's likely constrained by his day job, much like JM, but most of his other project stuff hasn't thrilled me either.  It's neat that he plays new and bizare instruments, and he's often quite adept at crafting a specific style for said instrument, but there are plenty of other disciplines that I want in a keyboard player that I've never seen him excel at.  To me, the greatest rock keyboard player of them all was Richard Wright.  JR is vastly superior to him both technically and musically.  Unlike JR, Wright could play any type of keyboard and always play the perfect thing.  The man was equally adept at playing B3, Rhodes electric, Moog, Farfisa, or a Steinway grand, and he had a perfect ear for all of them.  Frankly, I'd rather here some funky Rhodes than a Bebot solo any day.

Not to single you out, but I always find these comments interesting coming from DT fans. It's the kind of stuff I hear when I try to show someone any JMX, JP, or JR. Stuff like: "Yeah he can play fast and complicated stuff, but they're just a bunch of random notes with no feeling."

Yeah man not all DT fans are unreasonable fanboys. I can enjoy DT and still find some things they do horrible. DT isn't only about speed and complex music. I like them for their musical and melodic side. So when something stupid pops up, e.g. The ending of Raw Dog, I get pissed.

BRGM

I think they have feeling, it's not just a bunch of notes and fast playing, they have many sides!

tri.ad

He never denied that. He just said that while he enjoys many facets of DT's music, he also dislikes some aspects of it.

Spot on.

I love some parts like the solo of The Best of Times, which is complex but still full of emotion. But we also often get a JR keyboard solo that is a familiar pattern played really quickly in different positions of the keyboard.

Seriously the solos in Raw Dog are so unmemorable. They're fast and crazy but just boring melodically. I gotta admit I love the Maiden section though because it's catchy as hell. DT really needs to focus on melody more I reckon. JR's new gadgets are all fun and all but I hope he never uses thr Bebot ever again. It CAN be utilized properly like when they did Solitary Shell live. But his recorded solos in AROP and Raw Dog are just silly.

BRGM

I think teh bebot solo on AROP is good, imo, allways fun when JR is playing with some new stuff, likethe HArpejji in Raw dog too :D andwhen I first saw him play the continuum on score :D

Adami

Hearing the Bebot solo in AROP was so sad. I saw a video of him playing a Bebot thing once, it was so beautiful and melodic. Then when it comes to writing he just jerks off on an ipod and somehow it makes the record.

Well, I like how Jordan plays...i

Quadrochosis

Jordan, with JP close behind.

Dublagent66

Well, JR is the obvious choice compared to other keyboard players but I still went with JP of course.  :2metal:

:O why?

Probably cause you use smiley faces instead of periods :D
I suppose age doesn't really matter though. If you can appreciate JR and/or bacon your probably alright.

BRGM

Oh, so smileys have turned childish? hmmm  :-\

ScioPath

No i'm just nitpicking. Smileys are great!

I just wanna know "who's the best musiciain?"

BRGM

JR
JP
JM
MP
JLB

That order :D I guess

reneranucci

Maybe JR.

Only thing I know is that JLB is the weakest link.

Bone_Daddy

Gotta go with Jordan on this one with JM as a close second.

Now I wish MP would bring JM to the EQ forefront so we can hear more of him.  :tup

emindead

Looks like we're increasing our "daddies" here at DTF, :lol

Here's the thing about Rudess. He's the only keyboardist in the world at his level. Nobody else has the knowledge of music, how to play the instrument, the technology, and the ability to execute based on that knowledge. He's completely in his own league as a musician.

Very well said.

If Keith Emerson weren't still alive, everything he said would be true. ;)

So just wondering, who are some of the drummers considered "better" than MP? I just can't seem to find one or accept the fact. Of course I saw Neil Peart and that guy who hits snare in insane speed, but I didn't see anyone "noticeably" better than MP. I hear the drummer from Tool is good though. But I haven't heard their song.

Edit: Just found out the name of the guy with insane snare speed. Buddy Rich is the guy I'm talking about.

KevShmev

Buddy Rich pretty much destroys all rock drummers, even the best ones like Peart.

Anyway, in the rock and metal worlds, the three drummers I would clearly put ahead of Portnoy (who are still regular performers, meaning I am leaving out guys like Moon, Bonham, etc.) are:

Peart
Gavin Harrison
Carter Beauford

Portnoy would be in the next tier, for sure, though.

Dream Team

Portnoy himself often namedrops Mangini, Donati, and Colaiuta as the guys he considers more skilled than he.
