RIP IOANNIS who did at least a percentage of the artwork for this record among a ton of other albums.

Sad news, but any clue as to what he actually did for the WDaDU artwork? I know the cover image (which is repeated throughout the original CD booklet and packaging) was done by Amy Guip. He's credits for "art direction" - what does that mean? The fonts used and the layout? Arranging of the band member photos? Something else?
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

I have no idea, but yes "Art Direction" is what he is credited with

which "Art Direction" is what he is credited for many albums he worked on.

what that exactly refers to? it sounds like it could be like an overseer or advisor.

For what it's worth, AI says

QuoteIn album credits, "Art Direction" signifies the individual or team responsible for the overall visual aesthetic and style of the album's artwork. This person or team guides the design process, ensuring the artwork aligns with the artist's vision and the album's overall theme.
Elaboration:
More than just design:
Art direction encompasses more than just the specific design of the artwork. It involves the overall visual concept, style, and even the tone of the artwork.
Collaboration and guidance:
The art director often works with the artist and other designers to create a cohesive visual experience that complements the music.
Key decisions:
They make key decisions about color palettes, typography, imagery, and overall visual style, ensuring a consistent and impactful aesthetic.
Distinct from the artist:
While the artist may have their own vision, the art director helps translate that vision into a tangible visual form, sometimes working directly with the artist or indirectly through the designers.
Example:
Imagine an album cover for a dark, atmospheric rock band. The art director might choose a moody color scheme, use grunge typography, and incorporate imagery that evokes a sense of mystery and power.
"I have facility enough that I can throw down something, and play it, and play it correctly, and play it in time, but that doesn't make good records.  What makes good records for me, is when you capture a performance or you get some feeling that you get on tape and that you know you can't plan for it" -Kevin Gilbert

If you listen to this album and practically any of the subsequent after I&W you might think different bands made them.

All my natural instincts are begging me to stop
But somehow I carry on, heading for the top
A physical absurdity, a tremendous mental game
Helping me understand exactly who I am

Dream Team

Which is unfortunate, abandoning that neoclassical guitar riffing and busy bass playing.

I think the different singers and production are deceiving, at least to me; when I hear Afterlife (and Another Won) from Score, and Only A Matter Of Time and A Fortune In Lies from Budokan 2004 and Live At Luna Park, respectively, I don't feel like they're from a different band. But yes, WDADU is quite unique, mainly for what Dream Team mentioned.

I'll add that I really love how different WDADU, I&W and Awake are. Such a stellar album sequence.
