I enjoy it, but there's no doubting that it's the biggest Tool-ripoff ever recorded.
doubting it exists.. Karnivool repeatedly come closer to sounding like Tool on Sound Awake than DT does in TGD. or even parts of Riverside's last output (most notably, the song Driven To Destruction).
hell, it could even be argued DT themselves sound closer to Tool than in TGD (the 46&2 riff in Home...though i believe they wrote it possibly before aenima came out).

EDIT: just realized how old them original posts are. Sound Awake barely existed when this thread was created. my bad.

Incredible song.  I really can't come up with a single thing about it that I don't like.  I lot of people don't like it.  But then again, a lot of people are retarded.

Pretty much what I wanted to say... I wouldn't change one single element of this song.. it's just so perfect as is...
The intro is so impressive that it never ceases to get me receptive for the big message and to fill me up with the necessary emotions when the song gets to its peak... the drumming is very characteristic and tasteful... with that subtle build up in the intro I grow impatient every time and when finally I hear the very first riff.. always the same insane effect....
Samples are tasteful and so is the ground work behind them...

Vocals are insane... The high pitched vocals ( not high on JLB scale though, talking about normal human range) right after the robotic ones create a great effect... at song's peak James is shitting the emotions perfectly.. gets me every single time... the vocal melodies on the chorus are out of this world...

the main riff is beyond sick... and with that guitar tone it works brilliantly!!! ... I can listen to that riff forever on its own without any other layer added... that beautiful it is...

A masterpiece and hands down the best on the album!

Are you justified in disliking this song :p

This is -BY FAR- my favorite track on 6DOIT

Other than the title track, The Great Debate was the first song on 6DOIT that just clicked with me.  One of the things I really like about it is that despite the length there doesn't feel like any wasted space.  From the long slow buildup until the end, it is as cohesive a song as 13 minutes can be without including some of the "wank" that TGP had.

One of the band's greatest tunes IMO. There are a few better ones, but it's up there. Definitely my favorite on the disc (unlike most people I have no positive feelings towards The Glass Prison except the first couple of minutes). I simply enjoy the tune a lot, and it's quite groovy for a DT song. Also, I tried listening to the Tool stuff some of you mentioned, but really, I don't think the song sounds like Tool. Maybe a little bit of influence, but Tool still does nada for me. If they sounded anything like TGD I'd listen to them a lot, but they don't.

This!  If you try to rush through the song instead of letting it build it looses everything.

Wow, this thread has been resurrected twice, and I still don't care for this song very much.

Rattlehead

Might be the DT song that took the longest to grow on me out of the entire discography thus far but it is an awesome song  :metal

Nem is correct. A fine tune, which deserves every second of its 13 minute length. I especially love that doomy middle section.  :metal

Easily my favourite song off 6DOIT disc 1.  One of DT's most dramatic intros. I love the symmetry of the song.

It's probably tied with Blind Faith, but yeah, I agree with this.

?

Definitely one of the highlights of Six Degrees. The Tool influence is pretty obvious but I like the atmosphere and, as said, it doesn't feel too long at all.

I noticed the similarity to Natural Science, but there's also parts similar to Cygnus X-I Book I, at 8:10. That is, 8:10 in Cygnus not TGD :P
