I ranked DT albums in a tier list based on how musically heavy they are.

You're right about Scenes being somewhere in the middle. It never hit me that, compared to most of their discography, it's not THAT heavy.

I think WDADU is pretty damn metal. At least metal than tier 3 (Octavarium, Scenes and ADTOE) WDADU fails to deliver heaviness because of its production and Charlie's vocals.

I kind of agree your other listing.

Yeah, every time I see this topic come up, I'm reminded of just how malleable the personal definition of 'heavy' can be.

For instance, on a list where 9 out of the band's 16 albums are on the 'heavy' end of the spectrum, I'm not sure I'd consider anything other than, say Train of Thought and Parasomnia as 'heavy' albums. But, it's all about the frame of reference, I suppose.

The older I've gotten, the more I realize that 'heavy' (for me, at least) has little to nothing to do with tuning or production, and everything to do with spirit and energy.

I feel like songs like "As I Am" and "This Dying Soul" channel that vibe, as do songs like R.E.M.'s "These Days" and Pearl Jam's "Blood." There's nothing really in common there (at least, not sonically) between those three songs, but within the context of each artist's catalog, they all feel like 'heavy' moments to me.

I would put SDOIT a tier lower. Outside of Glass Prison, and a section of the titled song (War Inside my Head and Test that Stumped Them All) the album itself is not as heavy.

Agreed. Whenever I listen to it, it strikes me as much more "metal" than I&W. It's really the way it was recorded and mixed that makes it come off as less heavy, particularly in regards to JP. The chugs in A Fortune In Lies are a perfect illustration of this, his rhythm tone is noticeably less saturated and Kevin sits louder in the mix than in subsequent releases. But the writing is very reflective of the metal of that time, you can really hear the Queensryche and Maiden influence.

That´s fair. I can see Octavarium, but Scenes and ADTOE do have some more heavy chugging, I would say.
