If we compiled a list of people's top 10 DT songs, some albums will be repeated more than once namely Images and Words, SFAM .....
If you had to make your top 10 DT songs with no album Repeats which songs would you put.
Here's mine (not in any particular order):
Octavarium- ACOS- New Millenium- Home- Voices- INPOE (PT1-2)- Learning to Live
Interchangable 3:
Breaking All Illusions- Barstool Warrior- Stream of Conciousness

4. Lines in the Sand

TheCountOfNYC

Okay I put my favorite song from each album (and A Change of Seasons) through a ranking machine and here's what I got.

01: Octavarium
(Octavarium)
02: The Count of Tuscany
(Black Clouds & Silver Linings)
03: A Change of Seasons
(A Change of Seasons)
04: Breaking All Illusions
(A Dramatic Turn of Events)
05: Take the Time
(Images and Words)
06: Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
(Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence)
07: The Dance of Eternity
(Scenes From a Memory)
08: Stream of Consciousness
(Train of Thought)
09: Lines in the Sand
(Falling Into Infinity)
10: Constant Motion
(Systematic Chaos)

And the rest of my album favorites that didn't make the top 10.

11: The Shadow Man Incident
(Parasomnia)
12: Scarred
(Awake)
13: Only a Matter of Time
(When Dream and Day Unite)
14: Sleeping Giant
(A View From the Top of the World)
15: Surrender to Reason
(Dream Theater)
16: Our New World
(The Astonishing)
17: Pale Blue Dot
(Distance Over Time)

My top 7 remains unchanged from my overall top 10, but the forced exclusion of Panic Attack makes this list change starting at number 8. I'm also surprised how poorly Pale Blue Dot matched up with the rest of the songs, but that makes sense since I think Distance Over Time is the most middle of the road album the band has ever made, with nothing on it that's really terrible but also nothing that stands out to me to bring me back to it, with me often choosing to listen to what I consider to be inferior albums overall like Black Clouds or the self-titled record because the few highs are much higher.

It's a testament to the strength of DT's catalog that my top 13 songs come from 10 different albums (and, going even further, my top 16 songs come from 12 different albums and top 18 from 13 different albums).*

1. A Change of Seasons (ACOS) (1)
2. Learning to Live (I&W) (2)
    Metropolis (3)
3. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (SDOIT) (4)
4. Octavarium (8VM) (5)
6. Home (SFAM) (6)
7. Scarred (Awake (7)
8. In the Name of God (TOT) (8)
    Blind Faith (9)
    Fatal Tragedy (10)
    Stream of Consciousness (11)

9. Breaking All Illusions (ADTOE) (12)
10. Illumination Theory (DT12) (13)

* - It's possible that another ranking will see The Shadow Man Incident creep into that range.

Pretty much the same with me, they generally have 1 to 2 masterpieces per album at least so it's expected a top 10 would feature many albums.

Here's my list compiled from when KevShmev or pg1067 (forgive me for not remembering who) had done a DT song ranking:
1. Learning to Live
2. The Mirror (w/ reprise)
3. Light Fuse and Get Away
4. Disappear
5. Home
7. The Count of Tuscany
8. A View From the Top of the World
9. A Change of Seasons
12. Lines in the Sand
13. Breaking All Illusions

And the remaining 6 albums (excluding Parasomnia, since it's still too new for me to rank everything compared to the catalog):
18. Illumination Theory
21. Honor Thy Father
26. Pale Blue Dot
32. Never Enough
42. In the Presence of Enemies
75. Heaven's Cove

From Parasomnia, I would pick either A Broken Man or Bend the Clock, but I don't know where I would place either one at this point.

edit: added in my SC track (thanks pg1067 for pointing it out)! D'oh!
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

That's a good idea (although it's the remaining 6 albums for me given my #1 song, and you're missing SC in your list, and I failed basic counting in my prior post, so I've fixed it below)...

1. A Change of Seasons (ACOS) (1)
2. Learning to Live (I&W) (2)
    Metropolis (3)
3. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (SDOIT) (4)
4. Octavarium (8VM) (5)
5. Home (SFAM) (6)
6. Scarred (Awake (7)
7. In the Name of God (TOT) (8)
    Blind Faith (9)
    Fatal Tragedy (10)
    Stream of Consciousness (11)

8. Breaking All Illusions (ADTOE) (12)
9. Illumination Theory (DT12) (13)
10. The Killing Hand (WDADU) (15)
The Count of Tuscany (BC&SL) (16)
     Constant Motion (SC) (18)
     S2N (DOT) (28)
     Hollow Years (FII) (38)
A View from the Top of the World (View) (48)
A Life Left Behind (TA) (80)

TheBarstoolWarrior

1. Metropolis pt1
2. Strange Deja Vu
3. The Bigger Picture
4.  In the presence of enemies pt1
5. The Best of Times
6.  Bridges in the Sky
7. Lines in the sand
8. Barstool Warrior
9.  Octavarium
10. The Alien

It's not exactly my top ten but I balanced songs that are in my top something with how they might all fit together in a hypothetical best of album.
Disclaimer: All opinions stated are my own unless otherwise specified. I do not personally know any present or former members of DT. From time to time where the context is or should be obvious, I may decline to explicitly label my words as opinion. I cannot predict the future.

Revenge319

1. A Change of Seasons (#1)
2. Octavarium (#2)
3. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (#3)
4. Voices (#4)
5. The Count of Tuscany (#5)
6. Illumination Theory (#6)
7. In the Presence of Enemies (#11)
8. Finally Free (#16)
9. This Dying Soul (#17)
10. Trial of Tears (#19)
---------------------------
11. Breaking All Illusions (#20)

13. A View From The Top of the World (#32)
14. A New Beginning (#37)
15. Pale Blue Dot (#39)
16. Ytse Jam (#51)

I haven't included Parasomnia in my rankings yet. My favorite from that album is The Shadow Man Incident, it would probably rank above 17, but it wouldn't be any higher than 14 on this list.

DTiwbwMP

1. A Change of Seasons
2. Metropolis, pt. 1
3. Voices
4. In The Name of God
5. Octavarium
6. The Glass Prison
7. Home
8. The Count of Tuscany
9. Lost Not Forgotten
10. Trial of Tears

Ben_Jamin

I took this from my Top 100 and adjusted it.

1. Scarred (Awake)
2. At Wit's End (D/T)
3. The Bigger Picture (DT)
4. Bend The Clock (Parasomnia)
5. Chosen (The Astonishing)
6. Breaking All Illusions (ADTOE)
7. Finally Free (SFAM)
8. Surrounded (I&W)
9. Trial of Tears (FII)
10 6DOIT (6DOIT)

The rest of the albums:

Stream of Consciousness (ToT)
Answering The Call (AVFTTOTW)
These Walls (8VM)
The Count of Tuscany (BC&SL)
In The Prescence of Enemies (SC)
Only A Matter of Time (WDADU)

BeatriceNB

#13
1. Breaking All Illusions [ADTOE]
2. Octavariun [Octavarium]
3. The Count Of Tuscany [BC&SL]
4. Trial Of Tears [FII]
5. Space-Dye Vest [Awake]
6. The Bigger Picture [DT12]
7. The Ministry Of Lost Souls [SC]
8. In The Name Of God [TOT]
9. Learning To Live [I&W]
10. Afterlife [WDADU]

This could be my normal top 10, because Afterlife is the song next to Metropolis, #10 in my original ranking. Edit: I forgot about Illumination Theory somehow (which is a repeat, still), Afterlife is #12.

MirrorMask

Well, I'll just pick my DT top 10 from when we did the countdown, and skip over album repeat tracks.

1 Metropolis, Pt. 1: the Miracle and the Sleeper
2 A Change of Seasons
3 Voices
4 Octavarium
5 Home
6 Trial of Tears
7 The Glass Prison
8 Endless Sacrifice
9 The Count of Tuscany
10 Bridges in the Sky

Just to give proportions, to respect the rule I had to scroll down until my 27th ranked song.

MidnightSlice

1. Pull Me Under
2. Voices
3. Another Day
3. Home
4. As I Am
5. Count of Tuscany
7. In The Name of God
8. Caught In A Web
6. Blind Faith
10. Space Dye Vest
7. Breaking All Illusions
8. At Wit's End
9. Along For The Ride
10. You Not Me

Yes, You Not Me is my #14 overall with repeats.

Stream of Consciousness
Octavarium
Count of Tuscany
Fatal Tragedy
About to Crash
Erotomania
Shadow Man Incident
Take the Time
Breaking all Illusions
Dark Eternal Night

The top three are the top three, the rest are fairly interchangeable.

7: ITPOE

Weird to see "These Walls" show up more than once in this thread so far. It wasn't exactly a fan favorite back in the day, but perhaps time has been kinder to it.

Despite the title track from Octavarium ranking very high on my list, I'm largely indifferent to the rest of the album, but that's how strong I feel about that epic.

I don't have my DT song ranking list any longer but I remember thinking something similar about my list when I looked at the top songs.

Learning to Live
Voices
Finally Free
Disappear
Endless Sacrifice
Octavarium
In the Presence of Enemies
At Wit's End
Beneath the Surface
A Change of Seasons (if we are counting that)
Maybe the grass is greener on the other side because you're not over there fucking it up.

DragonAttack

Ytse Jam
Surrounded (six I&W songs are in my Top 20, so this one's tough)
Erotomania
Hollow Years
Overture 1928 / Strange Déjà Vu (counts as one song to me)
Six Degrees (Parts 5-8)
Sacrificed Sons
The Spirit Carries On (Score)
The Razor's Edge (Chaos In Motion...the Score version is far better, but I'm following the rules ;) )
Breaking All Illusions

HOF

These Walls came off to me as a more concerted attempt to be commercial than anything on FII. It's not actually a bad song, but the Linkin Park factor is pretty high there (and the guitar solo is easily the most disappointing solo JP ever wrote).

I'm a huge Neal Schon fan, but he would never play such a boring solo (even if it does sort of cop one of his melodies)!

Now Take Away My Pain, that's JP doing a fitting Neal Schon impression.
