Remember the COVER SERIES Bootlegs? Which would you want if they did one more?

It's funny because I wasn't the most avid fan of those albums necessarily, I always preferred the originals to the covers, but that's only because the albums they covered are bonafide classics and it is quite hard to beat a band in their own element. Just as I tend to not like covers of Dream Theater songs as much as Dream Theater performing their own songs, covers are more of a fun exercise than serious business for me.

But despite preferring many originals to covers, having covers helps retain perspective to how much goes into songwriting. I would love to see them try it if not one more time, and if they did, trying to figure out what album they should do is exciting. To review the ones that we already have:

Master of Puppets (Metallica)
The Number of the Beast (Iron Maiden)
The Dark Side of the Moon (Pink Floyd)
Made in Japan (Deep Purple)
Uncovered 2003-2005 (an assortment of songs by Black Sabbath, Queen, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Yes, Pantera, Journey, Kansas, and Ozzy Osbourne)

This assortment is pretty terrific considering how influential these bands were to the members of Dream Theater. So I wonder, what would a good album to cover next be? Could we see them cover a modern album? Remember, some of these albums were about 20+ years old when they covered them in the '00s. A '00s album could be covered and be just as far-removed from its initial release date. Or, they could dive back into that classic era of their earlier days too.

I for one think a Genesis album would be interesting, though incorporating the metal aspects could be challenging.
Rush is another obvious pick, and they have more of a proclivity to be capable of incurring heavier moments in their guitarwork.
Let's get weird though too! What if they tried to cover a Marillion album? I would love to hear them take-on Script for a Jester's Tear? Or if they went into the Hogarth era and did Season's End?

But those are mostly my prog picks. In realizing that they cover metal too, what if they did something like a Megadeth record? Maybe not the best considering Mustaine's vocal style versus James' might make for some strange interpretations.
Queensryche would be wild, imagine an Operation: Mindcrime rendition with LaBrie and Petrucci and Portnoy taking up some of those iconic moments that are so known to Tate and co.!
I would even like to hear them cover an album by bands I don't much listen to, like Fate's Warning for instance. Considering how that band was once seen as one of the big progenitors of prog metal, it could be a cool tribute.

These are but a few of my suggestions, I bet that people here have even better ones to put forth.
Half of my posts are satire; the other half are serious. If you can't tell which half you're looking at, it's probably the former. I enjoy busting chops amongst likeminded fellows. Where better to feel at home than among the fans of the world's most fun band? :)

Stadler

Physical Graffiti.

Heaven And Hell.

Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.

Fragile.

I had always wondered what MP's last pick was. If I recall he had said they had 5 albums picked to cover live, but the 5th never happened after he left. I would have thought maybe something proggier, but Stadlers thought of Zep or Sabbath would be really cool.

With how great LaBrie handled Ramble On in 2022, you might have picked the winner. Kashmir with James on lead?  :hefdaddy

With the caveat that my preference is that they just abandon the concept altogether, it might be neat to hear their cover of ...And Justice For All so that I can hopefully hear some bass on those songs.

A night at the Opera, or Queen 2 as that one's protometal anyways

Pretty sure it was Moving Pictures from Rush. That said, I would find it hard to believe that he didn't have a Yes album in mind - probably Close to the Edge. One band I would love to see them cover (if JL could pull it off) would be Queensryche's Rage for Order, although if they ever did a QR album, it would either be O:M or Empire. Zeppelin could be cool, but if they did it, I'd want Houses of the Holy. Black Sabbath could be cool and I'd want Mob Rules if they did, but chances are it would be an Ozzy album if they did a full album. Also Ozzy's Blizzard of Ozz would be great.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

The Letter M

I've always had 3 in mind...

Rush - Power Windows
Genesis - Wind & Wuthering
Yes - Relayer

I think those would give enough for Jordan to do, and they also feature some great guitar moments for JP as well.

-Marc.

DT doing Relayer would be incredible.

I'd love to hear them cover Boston's debut album in full. I think they would crush that.
