Reaper, become a king and separate SDOIT into the 8 tracks. DOWN WITH THE MODS

No can do. If it was me running it from the start I probably would've split it up but now that I have some lists in I'm not going to have people resubmit those. I'll break them out next go around.

I can completely exclude all of SDOIT because nothing from the second disk should make the countdown.... ;)

Zydar

I included 3 songs from TA on my Top 100, and that was pretty generous of me.

I've been toying with the idea of listening again and post some running commentary.  Not sure how many would be interested in that.

I surely would...

Although The Astonishing is probably a low-tier album for me, I really enjoy the whole piece. It is quite a sitdown to consume the entire record, but since I only listen to Dream Theater last couple of years (and I do mean that), it happens every now and then. And never disappoints me.

But ranking invidivual songs is truly hard, because the storyline isn't easily cut in pieces, not due to the lyrics, not the themes.

I honestly think I've only listened to the album in full once.  I tried again but didn't make it to the second disc from memory.

Interested!

I might run through it one morning next week.  Morning being morning in Australia.  Being online mid morning seems to catch a lot of the lads on here.

You've got a lot to live up to in order to match the vitriol from the FU review.  Mind you, that was over 10 years ago, so I'm sure you've banked up some of that hostility.

Still a long way to go with my list, I've listened up to Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. I will definitely have a list ready by the deadline. Speaking of SDOIT, it's somehow managed to hold up even better than I remember, which is impressive considering it's my favorite DT album and my second-favorite album of all time.

Also, the title track is one song. I get considering something like Porcupine Tree's The Incident as a bunch of separate tracks, but SDOIT was intended as one song and flows together as one song.

Aside from the brief pause before ATC Reprise, I think it flows together as one complete piece. I could see some of the transitions being seen as jarring, but I don't mind the more sudden transitions between movements. It still feels like one song instead of multiple separate songs in a row.

Puppies_On_Acid

Interesting observation working through this. Never Enough has aged much better than I remember it being. It's definitely not the best song on the album, but it's just better than I remember.

Also, have they never played this song live?

Played it heaps of times.  It's the song they were playing in the James Labrie bra incident.

Never Enough is awesome, and it's a sneaky great performance by James.

Yes, they played it in '05-'06. We got it in Boston on the Gigantour.

Super fun song live. Saw it in São Paulo in '08.

Huh, was it actually on a live release? Or am I missing a live release somehow? :corn

Cool Chris

Got my 100 out of the ranker but am going to review the list before sending it.

Did not anticipate the split would be as close as it is.
MP songs: 57
MM songs: 43

3 albums have every song represented.
WDaDU: 2 (surprised it was this many)
I&W: 8
Awake: 11

FII: 4 (see WD&DU)
SFaM: 6
ToT: 5
8VM: 6
SC: 4
BC&SL: 4
ADToE: 9
DT: 7
TA: 10
DoT: 6
AVFtTotW: 6
Non-Album: 5 (was very surprised at this total till I saw 4 of them are in the 90s)
Maybe the grass is greener on the other side because you're not over there fucking it up.

Hehe! That's great.

And wow, isn't that a brilliant performance from James?

Never Enough is a song I rank more highly than certainly most people here. I've no issue with the lyrics and I think the music is fantastic. The unison is one of my favourite slices of DT music, primarily because it reminds me of 8bit/16bit music so much.

Ok, I'm about to negotiate 602 comparisons with a computer apparently, but it's now or never.

Alright, the machine spitefully spat out a list.

It's definitely not right, but it's definitely not wrong and what should be out of the 100 stayed out.

I'm gonna tinker a bit with it until I find out I'm back to square one and then I'll send.

Not that you were about to.  Just trying to head that particular debate off at the pass.

I do have to still do a list and might spend some time listening to matchups as they come up in the ranker.  I guess it could be fun, as long as I take TA songs out beforehand.  ;D
