The Great Ape

"Open your eyes" would've startled the shit out of me, I know that much.

Edit: or just SFAM in general

Edit 2: or Victorias for that matter

I haven't heard the song - have you got a link?

Sorry for the rough version, do not want to violate Dream Theater's intellectual property rights.

It was nearly 24 years ago, and I was in my second year of law school (I had probably just gotten past on-campus interviews for my job the following summer), so I can't begin to remember with any certainty.  It's entirely possible that, the first time, I stopped the CD after the music faded out.  Knowing me, my reaction wouldn't have been much more than "heh...how about that?"  I don't think I really got into the story until a couple years later when I bought LSFNY and listened to the band commentary.

MirrorMask

I don't remember being startled, I just thought it was a WTFesque (in a good sense) way to close the album.

Took me a while to figure out the plot twist, which I remember realizing on my own, then online I connected the dots and found out the rest of the details, but even though it took me a while, eventually I figured out from the lyrics the twist.

It scared the hell out of me, and my name is Greg.
Can't imagine how I would feel if my  name was Nicholas instead.

I can't remember what I thought the first time I heard that ending. I think maybe it surprised me, but I don't know that I was scared.

Edit: I just realized we're talking about the part during the song, not the part at the end with the record scratch. The part during the song probably didn't startle me at all.

My fiance's name is Victoria. When we first started dating way back when, she heard me listening to Scenes and asked if she was fulfilling some kind of fetish of mine.

Well?

Chino

Negative. We've never used aliases when getting down.

That being said, connecting her to SFAM happened before even swiping right and I'd be lying if I said that it didn't get me a little bit giddy  :lol

Wait...we are?  Where you can hear "open your eyes, Victoria" in the background right before the final "one last time" refrain (around 4:36)?  That part wouldn't have startled or scared me at all.  Depending on how I was listening to it, I might not even have heard it clearly (or at all).

The only thing like this that's ever startled me is the alarm clock at the very end of Fates Warning's A Pleasant Shade of Gray.

Well?

I think the "S" and "M" in "SFAM" have slightly different meanings in that context.   :lol

HOF

Well, I guess we're talking about both. The "open your eyes Victoria" is during the song where she is being shot. The "open your eyes, Nicholas" is at the end before the record scratch. I was forgetting that Nicholas is his name in the present day.

Chino....I wish you would have waited another day or two to respond.   :lol

Vmaderra00....you nailed it!  I should use David's reaction under 808's post funny stuff post for today.  The strangeness here seems to be running rampant.

Nick

I have some expertise in this matter.

I mean, it's a pretty common name, and at the end of the day I don't relate to it too strongly because I always go by "Nick". But it's certainly just a cool tidbit. Don't recall being overly struck by it the first time I listened, but that was about 20 years ago.

gzarruk

Not a Nicholas, but my name is Gabriel. You can imagine my reaction when The Astonishing was announced :lol
