Quote from: Herrick on August 17, 2024, 08:27:30 AMIs this the longest they've taken to write and record an album? ...Not counting the times when they were looking for a singer or when their record label wouldn't allow them to start.
No, both The Astonishing and View took longer to finish. (View took 6 months to write and record and The Astonishing took more than 2 years to write and record all in all, of which 9 months were taken up by just the recording process alone.)

How is that possible? I mean, DT12 was released September 2013. Then they went on a world tour and The Astonishing was released February 2016.
It doesn't add up to 2 years.

Proof that spending more time doesn't produce a better result. This makes me hate that album even more knowing they wasted that much time on it. Thank you Max.
Half of my posts are satire; the other half are serious. If you can't tell which half you're looking at, it's probably the former. I enjoy busting chops amongst likeminded fellows. Where better to feel at home than among the fans of the world's most fun band? :)

Right after DT12 was released (in September 2013), John began writing the story of the album, then Jordan joined him and they started writing some parts of it while on tour for DT12 in 2014. Recording began in January of 2015 and finished in September of 2015 (and they still kept on writing some parts during that period of time as well, including while on their 30th anniversary festival tour mind you), and then afterwards it was mixed and mastered until December of 2015 and then came out at the end of January 2016.
So it was quite an undertaking in any aspect.

I wouldn't get too excited. I think the next update will basically state that the whole thing is done.

When the band record an album, how does it matter with his label? Can the band release the album when he wants, or is there an agreement between the label and the band, for an album's release date? Or is the label impose a deadline to the band, to release the album?

At this point I doubt Dream Theater has any imposed deadlines as far as album release schedules. There is a possibility they are beholden to manufacturing delays for physical copies, which could potentially push the release date out. Although, I'm sure they have already put in for manufacturing time well before now.

I would be curious to know if the band recorded some demos for each piece of the new album, or if he composed and recorded immediately and definitely each idea, for each piece.

At the very most it seems they maybe recorded a basic outline?, it seemed they wrote the songs and Portnoy just went straight to recording his drums afterwards. It didn't seem like much demoing was done from how updates came out.

From everything I've seen and heard over the years, this is exactly how they did it for SFAM, SDOIT, 8V, SC and BC&SL.

Not from where I'm standing. Learn to coexist. At least in the case of The Astonishing, I don't blame Mangini but Petrucci for thinking he could write the next Game of Thrones.

It's out of line from where I'm standing.  Enough with belittling other forum members, and enough with insulting the band because they made some albums you don't like.  Heed your own words and learn to coexist.  Take a week and think about it.

I told you that perhaps, we'll have the first album's excerpt before the begining's tour. I add that perhaps, at this moment, we'll be main informations, concerning this futur album (album title, release date, track listing, differents album's editions). Be carefull : th'at's just a hypothesis.

Don't worry, I'm not impatient at all. That's a good thing that the band takes his time.

I was SO EXCITED last October when announcement came out because I expected an IMMEDIATE tour! Nope! Opportunity missed!  :loser: I've actually LOST interest by now. So, whenever they decide to announce album....whatever! I will say though, that the crickets we are hearing really leads me to believe this album WILL BE MET.3!

First, Welcome to the Forums!

Second, great question! The relationship between a band and their label can be pretty complex, and it usually involves a lot of back-and-forth when it comes to releasing an album. Typically, when a band like Dream Theater signs with a label, they agree on a certain number of albums to be delivered over a certain period of time. The label usually has a significant role in deciding when the album gets released. This can involve setting deadlines for when the recording needs to be completed, as well as determining the best time to release the album based on factors like marketing strategies, tour schedules, and other industry considerations. That said, it's not like the label completely dictates everything. The band usually has input on the timeline, especially since they're the ones creating the music. It's a collaborative process where the label might push for a release window that aligns with their broader goals, but the band's readiness and vision for the album also play a big part in the final decision. In some cases, if a band feels strongly about needing more time to perfect their music, they might negotiate with the label to adjust the schedule. But in general, the label does have a lot of influence, as they're investing in the production, promotion, and distribution of the album. So, it's a bit of a balancing act between the band's creative process and the label's business objectives. Both sides usually try to find a sweet spot where the album can be released at the optimal time for both artistic and commercial success. Hope that clears things up a bit!
