August will either be the quietest month yet, or the best depending on what we get to find out.
Half of my posts are satire; the other half are serious. If you can't tell which half you're looking at, it's probably the former. I enjoy busting chops amongst likeminded fellows. Where better to feel at home than among the fans of the world's most fun band? :)

Progmaniac1988

I'd be happy even with a "album tracking is done! Time for mixing mastering, artwork" lol I'm thinking we will hear some sort of big album update before September.

brakkum

On one hand the wait for the tour is feeling like forever, but holy crap it's already August 4th? :eek
Hoping we get some official news this month

That would be nice. And some US dates! 🙏

Me too!

Quick aside...Crystal, have you heard James' last solo LP? If so, what are your thoughts? (I think he turned in an amazing performance...the Zeppelin cover is freaking incredible)

You could probably fly to London faster than you could drive to your neighbouring state for a picnic. (Just playing on some US stereotypes, I have no idea where you live.  ;D )

He can NEVER cover Zeppelin without bringing tears to my eyes, I'll tell you that 😁 It's the music of my childhood (my Dad's music), sung by my favorite voice of all time. It always moves me. His cover of Since I've Been Loving You literally had tears streaming down my face. I'd LOVE to hear what he could do with Stairway to Heaven. 😍

Ha! I'm in the Northeast, so you may be right  :rollin I'm not at liberty work-wise though to make such a pilgrimage this year.

I'm hoping for Wallingford!!! 🙏 Though I would go elsewhere in CT, MA or NY also (I'm in RI).

It was nice when DT used to play RI. I saw them at The Strand a few times and at Lupo's. I did not make it to the show at Rocky Point.
They also played Club Babyhead, which I had tickets for but there was a blizzard that night and I decided not to drive all the way to Providence.

😱 This is way before my time because I never knew this. How lucky you were!

We did see JP's solo tour in Providence, idk why DT doesn't come as a band anymore. I always thought they should come to PPAC!

I would be shocked beyond words if they didn't play the Oakdale in Wallingford.  I'm basically counting on it, frankly, and already scheming a meet-up at Archie Moore's, right around the corner (where we've met for several previous shows there).

I thought for sure that the PPAC was going to get the second leg of The Astonishing tour, as they said they wanted to play cities that they haven't played in ages.

Funny, I actually saw them at Oakdale on the view tour. Really nice theatre! I've been just personally preferring CT over NY shows lately. I avoid the city like the plague lol, but if they play radio city again I may have to drag my ass back to the city!

Seems like we should only be a couple weeks from the first official tidbits of information.

Did the band share something yesterday on their interview with Kim?

Schurftkut

nah, just repeating they didn't know about "Dead Again", and there's probably a new song to be played on the 40th tour (since JP didn't flat out deny that)

I would actually be very surprised if they didn't debut a new song off the new record on the fall tour.

Zydar

What if they debuted a song from DT17 even?  :justjen

He said "We'll see" and not in the way that is a tongue-in-cheek nudge nudge wink wink.  I thought he was just being polite and not say "no".  That's how it seemed to me.

They actually spoke about playing songs for the first time live before releasing it, and it seems they are against it. So unless we get a single before the tour, it ain't happening.

TheHoveringSojourn808

i think each show of the reunion tour is going to begin with James singing 1 word of the first single of the new album. by the end of the tour he will have Sung the Entire Song and on that morning they will release the track to the world at large
I'm never sleeping in a teepee again - Father John Misty

gzarruk

If they plan to release the album in early 2025, a single this year would make sense. If they, for whatever reason, delay the album release for mid 2025, then there won't be any singles out anytime soon.

Zydar

A quick scan through their discography page on Wikipedia says that their first single is usually released around 2 months before the respective album is released. BCSL was barely 1,5 month though (AROP in May, and full album in June).

Mixing should be beginning any day now, yes? If it hasn't already

Trav

Quote from: fadetoblackdude7 on August 08, 2024, 04:59:19 PMMixing should be beginning any day now, yes? If it hasn't already
It probably already has. I would imagine we will have a title, track listing and release date by early September. But if they're holding off until the new year they may sit on it. The tour starts soon but they need a marketing campaign for the new album, so there is no telling how they're going to do it.

MirrorMask

It's not gonna help us in calculating the possibile release date, but Nightwish's drummer posted a photo of their new album, he got the physical CD. The album is due to release on September 24th.

So physical copies of the album already exist 46 days before the release, and since the drummer just got it mailed, I'd wager they exist since some more days already. Or probably he got some advance "first press" copies and there wouldn't be enough to ship around yet should the album be releaased suddenly tomorrow.

Wim Kruithof

At least Petrucci revealed that there will be more information on #16 'in the near future' so there is much to endlessly chew on here in forumland, coming up nearby.

And since they love the Scenes-novel so much, it will be way before that one comes out, not to take shine from that release date (26th of October). And of course they're in O2 already by then.

The timing of the Scenes book announcement has me worried this is going to be Metropolis Part 3

Well, there's only so much more you can do with a third iteration of a theme, I reckon that since MT Part 2 was so successful, we'll be left feeling disappointed if MT Part 3 comes out and it's not as good, because that's probably what's going to happen

This. There are so many things that make "Metropolis part 3" weird:

- The own admission that pt. 1 was tagged like that just for the lulz
- The many, many "coincidences" with the plot of Dead Again
- The story in part 2 being self contained, with everyone dying in two timelines except for the villain. leaving aside the general theme of reincarnation which is basically an excuse to "reboot" the story any time, there's nothing left to know in the story, there's no need to know more
- The fact that part 1 is a song and part 2 is a friggin' album, so there would be a disconnect no matter what - another concept album? a song? how do you play Metropolis part 1, 2 and 3 together?
- The fact that since a quarter of century I'd daresay there's not a single interview where the band members ever said that the story left more to explore, that one day they'd like to return to Metropolis' world, or anything that ever gave indication that there's more to come, even in a "wouldn't it be fun" hypothetical.

The story is over. It wasn't even a story to begin with and it took all the creative lyrical license and the sheer awesomeness of the music to somehow tie together poetical abstract imaginery and a rearranged plot of a Kenneth Branagh movie. Nothing in the last 25 years indicated that there could have been more, so them coming up with "Metropolis part 3" would feel absolutely gratuitous and an attempt to ride on nostalgia.

MirrorMask wrote a very comprehensive post that nails it.

I will just add that to come up with Metropolis Part 3 at this particular moment would be weird and divide the fanbase into those who think it's a great idea and those who think the Metropolis story came to a satisfying end over 20 years ago.

To staple M3 to Mike Portnoy's return would seem to even further double down on nostalgia. I think the band still has a lot of creativity left in the tank and has no reason to resuscitate a story that they properly closed out.

I don't particularly want a record that tries to bring it back from the annals of Dream Theater history. You are seeing even fans who love that album are skeptical of a hypothetical third part. Why is now the right time for this album to be made? Do they really want to come out of the gate with something that most people are going to perceive as boom or bust? Seems like a lose-lose situation.

A few things:

–If it 'had' to be a concept album, I'd much prefer a story in the vein of SFAM as opposed to the dystopian 2112-retread that was TA.

–While the last thing I want is Metropolis III, I'll definitely reserve judgement until I hear it (I famously bitched and moaned when MII was announced, and have spent the last 25 years eating my words)

–Whatever the band decides to do, they genuinely seem excited, which has me excited. So, I am doing my best to check any and all expectations at the door. Even if DT16 winds up not being my bag, I will still be satisfied knowing that this line-up found a way to bury the hatchet and reunite.
