Vola is a good choice. And I would like to see more of the next generation of prog bands(not necessarily Djent) on the next round. I think 5 bands total would make this feel like an actual festival vs just DT with 3 openers. Book smaller venues, start the show a earlier so that DT still gets a good amount of time.

Dream Theater
Haken
Vola
Periphery

I don't think NMB would be a good fit, but it'd be incredible to see them and Dream Theater on the same day. Hell, could even open up the encore to having MP come and play some sort of Shattered Fortress medley!

Realistically, though...

TEMIC or Haken would be awesome. How about Coheed & Cambria?

It's a phenomenal long-shot but Lifesigns would be incredible on a big stage. Not sure how John Young and their bassist would get their stage antics in front of a crowd that large but hugely underrated band that deserve some mainstream attention. Not exactly metal though.

Marillion wouldn't be a good fit. I don't like VOLA and wouldn't go if they were on in exchange for a gimped DT set... but that's just me. Would gladly take a reduced DT set for a Haken / Coheed / TEMIC opener though.

...Meshuggah????

I saw them open for Megadeth back when Megadeth was touring for Dystopia, and they bored me to tears.  I guess that's blasphemy given that they seemed to be revered for their use of rhythm, but all I experienced was a rhythmic drone with no dynamics to speak of

Since this tour actually had some regularly touring bands that could draw 500-1k people themselves, if we keep that standard, then a lot of the suggested bands aren't going to work.

Something more like

Dream Theater
Between The Buried and Me
Haken

would seem more likely to me.  I can't imagine Dreamsonic continues and Haken are not apart of it.  But I'm not sure they are big enough to be the second billed band.  Of course they could also go smaller since the bigger venues mostly didn't work and then I'd change my thoughts.

I'd also love to see Evergrey or Caligulas Horse in that opening slot.

gmillerdrake

Between the Buried and Me is playing tonight in St. Louis.....Thank you Scientist is opening. I'm really bummed that me and the boys have a prior commitment.

Architeuthis

As far as being more lucrative.  Queensryche and Symphony X , and if course Dream Theater.
Queensryche is playing medium to smaller venues these days but they put on a good show. Symphony X is killing it live right now!
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Porcupine Tree yet.

Saw them last year for the first time and it was utterly awesome!

Ehh....I guess. That's another one I've tried like hell to get into but it's never clicked. Good Music.....but the vocals kill it for me. If i want to listen to someone whine for an hour I'll just go talk to one of my teenagers.

steven would never do that

And thank god.  I'm with Gary; if Porcupine Tree was on the bill, I'm hanging in the parking lot with Crystal Stars and her husband. :) :)

There's 0.001% chance Porcupine Tree would do that anyway.

To each their own, I get it, but seeing PT in concert last year was a highlight for me.

no, I know people like them, and I don't begrudge that; Richard Barbieri and Gavin Harrison are excellent.  I only take shots because of the sanctification of Steven Wilson, who, other than his brief work with Fish, I can't really listen to.

I'd be happy to see Redemption play with DT again, and while I don't love their albums all that much, I think Mastadon would be a hoot to see live.

How about Umphrey's McGee? Not metal enough?

Not metal (or really heavy enough) so I don't think they'd seriously be considered, and sadly, I think Mastadon are too big for this.  It would have to be coheadlining in that case I would think.  I do think DT/Mastadon would be a solid combo though.

Dream Theater
Haken
Pain of Salvation

This would be a great triple bill for me!

Ok, hold on... *brainstorming*........

Opener: James LaBrie (solo stuff)
Middle slot: OSI (making live debut)
Headliner: Liquid Tension Experiment

Encore with Metropolis (LTE w/ JLB and KM)

😆 obviously this is madness including OSI, but I quite like JLB getting to do some solo stuff, while simultaneously singing for LESS time per night and NOT having to do 90 minutes of DT material. And LTE really needs to tour a real tour.

Same. The music is pretty awesome. But to me Steven Wilson is nowhere near as talented as his legend suggests. I get why people dig the band and their musical aptitude.....but cannot get onboard with Wilson. Average at best in my opinion but that's just my opinion.

I'm going to shame you Gary.  :lol

Fuck not metal, that would be a fantastic choice.

Yeah, he's overrated in my book as well.  He's got great emotional music, but its a mood and a mood I'm not always in. I think porcupine tree is better than SW solo and would probably work better as a tour partner for DT.  But SW as a person, comes off as incredibly unlikeable. I really don't see how they would ever tour with DT though.

gzarruk

Porcupine Tree falls into a category that I like to call not progressive metal, but depressive metal :lol

I'm pretty sure PT sold more tickets at a higher price in Philly on the last tour than DreamSonic did.

As if Steven had a choice whether to continue solo or bring back PT to generate more funds.

Yeah, and there were much more people at the RCMH show than the most recent DT show there. It just won't happen that those two bands will tour together.  I don't think PT has the desire to go on some extensive tour either. Part of those shows being as popular as they were was the exclusivity of seeing PT.  I get the feeling they'd rather keep it that way.

Steven would've likely kept solo rather than reform PT, but since TFB tour was invested in and he lost out on that. What is the best thing to generate more funds for future projects?

KevShmev

Plus, Porcupine Tree is generally pretty awesome, so it makes all kinds of sense as to why many would want to see them.  :coolio :hat

Jamesman42

Mastodon
Tool
DT

(I would love DTP and NMB but I can see why I should exclude them)
\o\ lol /o/

svisser

How about a co-headliner of Opeth and DT, or Devin Townsend and DT?

The bands just switch out who closes each night.
