Do you think DT became lazy? I know they are old now but still. I mean this is a festival and you can add at least 1-2 songs that not been played for a long time.

TSCO worked out really well as an encore with Devin though. The Mirror/Lie, Voices, ITNOG, The Root Of All Evil, Forsaken... are all needed to return.

Mladen

Out of ten tracks, they've only repeated two songs compared to what they performed last year in the USA. Not a bad set for the US fans to get.

Exactly.  Not many rarities granted, and obviously shorter than we'd like.  But it did feel very different from last year's set.

Yeah, even if that's what I expected, it's still pretty different than what the US got last round.  It makes a lot of sense and honestly, I don't see a reason to be bummed about it besides it just generally being a shorter set.

1. Yelling
2. Shouting
3. Screaming
4. Yelling
5. Screaming (acoustic)
6. Yelling (Cover song)
7. Screaming (2023 version)
8. Yelling (reprise)
Maybe the grass is greener on the other side because you're not over there fucking it up.

EPIC Outro

Is there any realistic chance DT might rotate some songs as the tour continues?

Bluefish

I respect Devin and Animals as Leaders, but I would rather see a full Dream Theater show.

If MP was still in the band, you can be sure more of their catalog would get an airing during each tour. But given the current circumstances (static setlists - lame yes, but it is what it is), compared to what they did for their first run through North America, most of the set is different.

Given their current MO, I wouldn't bank on it at all. There have even been occasions where they've acknowledged they could swap a few songs from show to show (like they did on the Dramatic tour), but they haven't done that at all since that initial tour (save for alternating between Paralyzed and Fall Into the Light on the d/t tour). So while it's a reasonable request, sadly it's far from "realistic" to expect it now.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

Right, and saying that, each tour's setlist has been quite varied from one tour to the next. Static setlists notwithstanding, I think JP has done a great job putting together the setlists.
Only two songs from the first US run are repeated. I think that's pretty damn good.

And I'm going to see two older songs I've actually never seen live before!

I also think DT is making a great job when rotating setlists from tour to tour. For this tour, personally and being realistic, I would just switch PMU for a never played song of DT, DOT or View. Keeping half of the show from MP era, half, MM era. It's a festival, but with only DT fans on it, right?

Really cool version of TSCO, with James sounding good  :tup

EPIC Outro

One of my great pleasures is trying to see DT songs live I have never seen before. So after twenty plus years of seeing DT, I am super excited to FINALLY see Caught in a Web later this month!

I previously saw Caught in a New Millennium, but I was too new to DT fandom to appreciate it.

I am also excited for the two AVFTTOTW songs we didn't get on the last US leg. I have avoided watching live videos of them, but I hope the entire audience joins in during Sleeping Giant's "Woaaaaahhhhhhh!" section!

Yup, I'm excited for more of the new album live. Also, I'm avoiding watching videos of the encore because I'm very excited for that as well.

I wanna be that guy... my LaBrie fanboism make me say LaBrie sounded really well judging by youtube videos. Not great but better than last Eu/Asia tour.

He does sound good and because of the shorter set I bet he'll sound good for more shows. I am HYPED for next week.

Architeuthis

It makes me wonder if they are gonna swap Tuscany and View from night to night?

Which youtube videos are you watching? He sounds like some random dude picked from the crowd, and not a professional singer by any stretch.

He's not really even singing the verses. He's just kind if wording them. Very weird. I watched this video earlier. I'm not the one exaggerating.

I don't want to start piling on James again, but halfway through the clip and nearly every line is him failing to sing it anywhere close to the written melodies.  It's like he is talking his way through much of it, and then when he tries to sing a word or two, it sounds all warbly.  Devin coming into to sing the bridge felt like such a massive upgrade in the quality of the singing (even if Devin's voice doesn't necessarily suit the song).

Still I think he sounds OK on both TCOT and TSCO. Cos I know how bad he sounded on TCOT in last Asia tour. I think this is the James now we must accept. I have a new standard of how he sounds. It's either bad or just OK... Sadly.

DTiwbwMP

Jesus, he has zero feel and melody left in his voice! HORRIBLE! That whole encore was ABYSMAL! I'll leave before that sh*tshow begins :tdwn :tdwn :tdwn :tdwn :tdwn :tdwn :tdwn

I assume the keyboard guy on JP's side of the stage is from one of the other bands?  I thought it was JR for a second and thought that was awfully odd.  The black guitar player looks like he didn't even know the song.  The post guitar solo chorus was really bad, and the bald guy was not good either.

I'd love to see the SDOIT sections, but the set list is otherwise unappealing, so I'll not be changing my mind about this at the last minute.

nobloodyname

Who was on the guitar and keyboards?

Devin did sound better than James. Obviously very different stylistically but it worked for what it was.

Ben_Jamin

You know what was awesome about the encore...The change of drummers, they did that so flawlessly.

I had to watch it after reading your posts....Man, you guys are picky. I thought it was great, and it is just the first night, and it looks like this was a decision made at the moment, which is obvious with Devin having the lyrics on hand.  :lol

nobloodyname

On balance, I'd rather be picky than have cloth ears :lol

I didn't actually say what I thought of James' performance. I simply said Devin sounded better. For the record, I've heard James sing much worse than that but he was still noticeably flat at times.
