Half my online time is spent looking at toys for the kitchen, so my ads are dominated by expensive Japanese knife stores

Some channels I find myself watching when they pop up in my feed:

Professor of Rock: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=professor+of+rock

Veritasium (science stuff): https://www.youtube.com/@veritasium

xkcd's What If (science stuff but funny): https://www.youtube.com/@xkcd_whatif

Technology Connections (super geeky how stuff works channel - there is a really cool and informative series from years ago about the history of recorded and broadcast media, now it's usually about random things like can openers and car break lights, but always interesting): https://www.youtube.com/@TechnologyConnections

Practical Engineering (you'd think I'm a science person but I'm really not. This kind of stuff helps me wind down at night). https://www.youtube.com/@PracticalEngineeringChannel

Recently I've fallen into a rabbit hole of watching different camping/survival/stealth camping videos. I stumbled upon some random video of a guy stealth camping in a roundabout and I thought "that's bizarre". Even though I wouldn't come up with the idea to do this myself, I guess it satisfied some weird craving I didn't know I had. I'm probably not the only one who found these kind of things fun as a kid - hiding in plain sight. There's other similar videos with the same concept where the location changes and instead of a roundabout you have a storm drain or behind a Mcdonalds parking lot or things like that.

One channel on the topic of camping I've really gotten into recently is Kent Survival. https://www.youtube.com/@KentSurvival

He just seems like a nice friendly guy with a lot of knowledge and I've watched a handful of his videos where he does challenges like "camping in a rainstorm with budget equipment from Wallmart/Wish/Temu)". For whatever reason I find his videos really calming just watching him put together a camping site, cook some food, enjoy life under the shelter of the tent while you hear the sound of the rain coming in. I'm not really an outdoorsy camping guy myself but for whatever reason I find these videos really entertaining.

Their Timeline Series is back again, after taking 2023 off, they started uploading Timeline videos from the 2000's decade a few weeks ago.

my wife and I enjoy his videos occasionally. He's done episodes on The Monkees, Rush, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Yes and Genesis I believe among others. He does or he used to focus on 80's mostly, which my wife and I being kids of the 80's, appeals to us. We actually try to listen to the American Top 40 80's every Sunday if we can, which Adam Reader takes a lot of inspiration from.
"I have facility enough that I can throw down something, and play it, and play it correctly, and play it in time, but that doesn't make good records.  What makes good records for me, is when you capture a performance or you get some feeling that you get on tape and that you know you can't plan for it" -Kevin Gilbert

I've watched a few of the Professor of Rock's videos. The videos I've watched are on my favorite bands so I didn't get much new info from them, but they were still fun to watch. I appreciate his enthusiasm and love for music and history.
Maybe the grass is greener on the other side because you're not over there fucking it up.

Yeah, I generally only watch when it's a band I'm interested in. I did see one last night about how Stevie Nicks wrote Stand Back as an intentional re-write of Little Red Corvet and somehow Prince ended up playing on it. Kind of a wild story I never knew (the songs don't sound that similar to me but I don't know Little Red Corvet that well).

My problem with Professor Rock videos is the clickbait titles make it hard to know what, or even who it's about. And even if it might be something you're interested in, the part of the title that brought you there may or may not even be part of the story. That pisses me off to no end.

Clickbait titles and preview pictures have totally ruined Youtube.

Yeah, I always skip a few minutes in past the intro to see if I can find out who/what he is actually talking about.

From one of the other channels I mentioned, here's a good explainer on why click bait titles are effective and essentially necessary to get anyone to see your videos:

I've struggled with that on the Prof's videos, and others.

Lately I have been getting a slew of videos in my feed with the thumbnail being either women in bathing suits for videos taken at water parks, or women in revealing clothing for either a massage or an ASMR video.

Clearly the YouTube algorithm is faulty.

Before they banned me for no damn reason, my Facebook feed was a nonstop feed of T&A that barely skirted the lines of their T&C. I never asked for any of it, but I cannot say that their algorithm is faulty. :lol

The thing is Facebook knows how long you look at anything. If you're scrolling and you pause for a second when a hot chick is fixing to pop out of her top (but never will) they notice. To them that means you're interested. YT is probably the same way.

Paul Harrell died yesterday. His was one of my longtime favourite channels. In perfect Paul Harrell style "he" posted a video yesterday simply title "I'm Dead," shot back in December for this occasion. Very Yul Brenneresque. His brother will be taking over the channel, and hopefully he'll get better, but he's definitely not Paul.
