I'm super pumped to see King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard tonight at Red Rocks!

It got me thinking, given that this band is currently on a rocket bound for Mars with their popularity and purview, it would make sense if the guys in Dream Theater began listening to them in earnest. I know the band members of some of my other favorite bands, including Phish, The Osees, and Rush are all influenced by King Gizz and the magic they have brought to music itself over the last couple years.

It would be super cool if DT took influence from Gizz though, specifically in the arena of their live show. For those who are uninitiated in the Gizzverse, King Gizz has been livestreaming (on professionally shot cameras) their concerts every night and putting them on YouTube for FREE!

YES FREE

THEN, if that wasn't already awesome enough, they are then uploading the soundboards from the shows directly to bandcamp... you guessed it, ALSO FOR FREE!! So that means any person who is following the tour but can't go because of distance, money, etc. can also partake in the entire experience from their home.

Now, wouldn't it be fucking sweet if Dream Theater did the same? Now that Mike Portnoy is back in action it goes without saying that the setlists will probably begin to have some variety from night to night, so now is the perfect time to take this up and come up with something new for the hungry DT masses

What do y'all think?

I've got on fairly good authority that JR is a total Gizzhead, but I can't divulge my sources.
Pretty sure MP is too.

I'll be honest, I'm not too familiar with King Gizz, but that whole streaming shows for free and uploading soundboards sounds next level. I can't really see Dream Theater doing something like that, though. Between the cost of their production and, let's face it, LaBrie's hit-or-miss performances, I feel like they wouldn't want all that out there for free. Plus, DT has always been more about those polished live albums.

That said, it would be cool. With Portnoy back, there's a real chance they might shake things up, especially if they start switching up setlists more. I'd definitely love to follow a tour like that online.

I agree with everything you said. It'd be so great to couch tour the entire DT tour, enjoying a huge bowl of Nachos and a sixer of beer everynight on the couch while our favorite son croons away the tunes we know and love.

Maybe they can even debut a new song off the album each show and by the end of the tour we'd have the full album played live before it's released, like the olden days. That'd be the Rush influence coming back around full circle  :corn  :metal

They haven't released enough albums this year to be properly inspired by King Gizzard.

Been thinking about this thread some more, and I've got to say, I sure wish they were.

I wish DT worked more like a jam band overall. They have such great musicians, I've always felt it is shame when a lot of times, you just see them doing the same thing note to note every night.

I think MP can be the catalyst for change. With The winery dogs they were doing a lot of jammy stuff live, and I can see that happening in dream theater if they wanted it to.

Might help James out too. Maybe you do a traditional first set, a second set that is heavy on jamming and giving James a break, and then an encore where James comes back for one of their favorites. Just food for thought.

If anybody heard the bonus disc of the latest LTE record, it was basically just a disc of the guys jamming. I really liked it a lot, better than the actual album in some ways.

Their musical output is fundamentally antithetical to the jam band style. The Winery Dogs are a totally different type of band so it does not really have to do with the personnel. It's the style and brand of the act that matters.

We're not inspired by them, at least from what I heard my bandmates spinning on their playlists.

Maybe their music over the last 15 years or so, but back in the early days they used to incorporate extended jams into their set. As late as the Once in a Livetime shows they were still going from Take the Time into Fee Bird and throwing a theme from Star Wars into Voices and then there was a little jam they tacked on at the end of Metropolis Pt 1 that was really cool.

They added some jams to the Systematic Chaos tour too. Anyone remember the incredible Surrounded -> Sugar Mice -> Surrounded ?? KGLW does that kind of stuff too and I hope it comes back  :yarr

I have heard two songs by this band.  Both sucked, and I have no interest in exploring further.

Do I think at least one member of DT has listened to KG?  Yes.  In particular, I understand MP to be a voracious consumer of music.

Do I think at least one member of DT who has listened to KG might draw some inspiration from it?  Sure.  I assume they are potentially inspired by everything they hear.

Collectively?  No.

I wouldn't be surprised if Portnoy likes them, but I'd be a little surprised if any of the other 4 had even heard of them.

It'd be cool to hear DT do an album inspired by Infest the Rats Nest. They've already kind of leaned into the vibes from Petrodragonic Apocalypse and its more Tool-ish sound, but a more proto thrash kind of vibe would be sweet if DT tried it. I bet JP could write some cool solos for that kind of vintage sound (and he could drop the chocolate cake for a change)

No thanks.  I would prefer if Gizz is Gizz and DT is DT.

Indeed. That is my highest hope for DT16 (apart from JR going back to the keyboard lead sound he had in BC&SL)

I wouldn't be surprised if at least one member of Dream Theater has tried out King Gizz, they have made prog albums after all. Inspired by? Nah. Though who knows what we'll hear on this new album. If suddenly a song starts with a harmonica then we'll know Flight b741 was consulted

An even more entertaining question IMO: are any KGLW members into DT?

I don't venture into this part of the forum often, so only just catching up.

I think a lot of bands could look at how King Gizzard are navigating the modern music industry, and take notes. I think it's unlikely DT will, they are a lot older and probably set in their ways.

I love the thought of them being inspired musically though  :lol
