Two popular DT tracks from the 90's.
Take your pick.

The best parts of Home were the nods to Metropolis, and without Metropolis, there would be no Home, or those parts wouldn't have nearly the impact that they do. So yeah, Metropolis, without question.

Home top 10, maybe even top 5.

Metropolis not top 20.

They are both great songs.  But this pretty much sums up why I picked Metropolis:

This.

Still, Home is fantastic, but Metropolis > basically almost anything.

Setlist Scotty

Home by a country mile.

Metropolis is good, but I wouldn't rate it as highly as everyone else seems to.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

Home is a de facto Metropolis Part 2.  Both are top 10 DT songs, but I have to give the nod to the original.

Home is one of my favorite DT songs.  I love Metropolis too, but Home has the vocal melodies that make it more enjoyable to me.

KevShmev

Metropolis is better, but the fact that Home wouldn't exist without Metropolis having happened first is totally irrelevant.

bosk1

Except for it being totally relevant, I agree with everything you just said.

TheCountOfNYC

Home by a hair. They're both brilliant songs though.

By which one's hair? Jordan's long hair (20 years ago) or MP's fairly short hair? :D (predictable, I know. Sorry.)

Pre-empting DT The League, I see? There's a chance we could get to vote for this all over again at some point in the next 30-odd weeks.

Ninjabait

Home would have won, if it wasn't for that...uh, awkward middle section. It's a great song outside of that one bit.

So I guess Metropolis. They're both really good tho.

TAC

In the music dictionary the definition of Dream Theater IS Metropolis Pt.1.
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

Totally agree. The song alone made me a DT fan.

Might have been the same in my case, coming to think of it (can't remember too well,  was 21 years ago), either way, Met1 may have been the first ever DT piece I listened to as a child. Was very impressed by it at the time.

Home is a de facto Metropolis Part 2.

I remember addressing this previously... I think the 99% of people here agree that Scenes from a Memory is one of the greatest things ever happened to mankind, along the invention of the wheel and human rights, but anyone feels that, in the end, we didn't really get a "Metropolis Part 2 - the song"? as in, another song in the same style of Metropolis such as This Dying Soul is a direct continuation of The Glass Prison?

Well, I still prefer Scenes from a Memory as an album rather than the potentially 25 minutes long Metropolis part 2 that the demo of the song hinted at, but if there had been a Metropolis part 2 song, it definitively would have been Home. Another song with musical and lyrical callbacks to the original, such as in the AA saga.

If Home in itself was called Metropolis Part 2, as in the song, then in comparison, it would've been a woefully inferior follow up to Metropolis. Ultimately, I think what they did was smart, because I mean, we did get an idea of what Metropolis Part 2 the song would have sounded like in the Falling Into Infinity Demos, and it wouldn't have been like Home, so maybe in the end, a 20 minute epic like that, which incorporates what we now know as various parts of the Scenes album, would've been incredibly well received, but maybe it would have ended up being an underwhelming sequel no matter what, given how awesome, and generally loved the song Metropolis is.
So in the end, it was probably the right decision to make the follow-up, Metropolis Part 2, a whole album, instead of just one sequel song.

Fritzinger

Metropolis, a hundred times Metropolis.

While Home is a great song, I never understood why so many people consider it one of their favourite songs or even their favourite song by Dream Theater. I'd even rank it in the lower half of all songs on Metropolis Pt.2. The best part of it is the ending in my opinion.

Metropolis is also not the best song on its album, but it's still a masterpiece. That shows what kind of album I&W is, if a song like Metropolis is not even the best one on it :D But with Learning To Live being on the same album...

Agreed with everything you said.

"Home" is fine, middle of the road DT for me. Decent riff, good JP solo, VERY strong vocal melodies. However, it really has no business being over 12 minutes long. It also has that "middle eastern" flavor, kind of like DT's answer to Metallica's "Wherever I May Roam" or Tool's "Forty Six & 2".

"Metropolis 1" on the other hand is a landmark in the prog metal genre, totally original, insane display of musicianship that we've come to love. One of DT's finest.

Agreed, it's a simple question, which song do you like more? Which one came first and which one inspired the other doesn't matter. All that matters is which one is better in your opinion. That being said it's Metropolis Pt 1 by miles!

This one is tricky. I think I actually prefer Home but if I was to objectively look at it, I think Metropolis is the superior song so I went with that.

ThatOneGuy2112

Metropolis still remains my favorite DT song of all time, so that, though Home is fantastic too.

What makes Metropolis Part 1 objectively better than Home?

Home is an absolutely fantastic song.

Metropolis is a lot better.
