I'm a drummer and I love what we heard so far. (the sound and the notes played)

Slightly ELP and Gentle Giant as well IMHO.

Oh dear god no.

the snippet sounds like ADTOE mixed with Haken

I am sure the comparison with Haken would stop once James' superior vocals came in.
Maybe the grass is greener on the other side because you're not over there fucking it up.

Either way, I like what we can hear in that snippet and literally everything they teased so far. That's all.

here is another cool bit by Jordan IMHO: https://www.instagram.com/p/BnFh7znHERa/?taken-by=jcrudess, we might ultimately find it on the album somewhere

I think the video was for the purpose of teaching & showing rhythmic displacement.

Like everything so far too.  I am hoping for a better mix and master this time as well.  It is encouraging that they are aware of the drum sound issue and addressing it.  I thought The Astonishing was a step in the right direction.  All you have to do to see the difference these things make is to listen to any of Steven Wilson's albums from Fear of a Black Planet and later.  This is when he started preserving more dynamics in the master.  They sound so clear, present, and energetic.  It feels like you are there in the room with them.  When you play a recent DT album right after you really notice the difference.  The DT albums sound more muted and lifeless by comparison.

Try this test if you are interested.  Try listening to a DT12 track.  False Awaking Suite is fine.  Then right away switch to the first track of Fear of a Blank Planet. (CD version preferably)  When the drums start you will immediately notice a HUGE difference in the presence and clarity.  It just makes you dream and wonder what a DT album might sound like with production like that.  Imagine DT12 with that kind of snare.

Well yes, SW is great at creating music. :hefdaddy I agree 100%.     However it his attention to the sound and production that makes him pretty unique.  I wish DT could get him to do the mixing and mastering but I doubt it will ever happen.  Who knows though.

ToT-147

Nah, you didn't understand me... or didn't want to..

Anyways, I'll say what I've been saying and thinking the past 5 years: I don't care about the sound or the mix at all, only the music.. Which, judging by the snippets, is more than promising, as usual... although I guess we don't need any snippet at all to know that the music will be really great, as usual..

The mix IS the music

The sound, by definition, IS the music

Yeah, I don't know why anyone would want to listen to SW.  For ANY reason.

I don't know who you are referring to when using SW because I KNOW you're not talking about Steven Wilson!

I don't understand.

Talking Book, Songs in the Key of Life, Innervisions and Fulfillingness First Finale are terrific albums.

What?.. No.. Each one of those words has its own different definition.. You can have music without the mix, and the sound is music!?... I can't even....

The sound is the sound, and all you can do is live with it..

Another snippet, really proggy one, from the album!

I like how this sounds like every Dream Theater instrumental breakdown part ever. If I had to give someone a snippet of the "typical Dream Theater sound", this would probably be it.

Max Kuehnau

Thanks for going back on topic. Yes I love it too. All the teasers we've been given are great and I'm relieved about that and the band's current state. I think they needed that.

Ok, prediction time!

How long will the longest track last?
How many instrumental tracks?
How many ''classic'' DT tracks, around 10 mins?

I think they are going safe with this album, so I'd say longest track will be 15-20 min, 1 instrumental track and 4 tracks longer than 10 mins

Well, James mentioned in an interview he did last year that they may write a long piece again (meaning 20 minutes and up), IIRC. I may be wrong though. I would think three or four tenner-range pieces and one or two 20+-ers. But what do I know.

Or: one long piece, one instrumental or two (full instrumentals not counting False Awakening, although that was cool), 2-4 tenners and the rest may be short pieces to land in the 70-90 minute range. But I rather stick to actual facts, sorry.

I'm fine with an album like A Dramatic Turn of Events, songs length wise (and the balance of it).

fadetoblackdude7

I'm predicting 10 tracks
1 of them 15 min
1 of them 13 min
The rest of them 8 min and under
