DT are recording a cover of Xanadu as part of Rush's A Farewell to Kings 40th Anniversary Super Deluxe.  Looking forward to hearing this, one of my favourite Rush tracks.

The covers are only available on an LP? Lame.

I'd download them, but I'm not paying for all the rest. I'm perfectly happy with the original album and don't need any Vinyl. Let me download the live and cover stuff.

Xanadu? I wonder when they would record this (maybe they already recorded it).

Mangini did a cover of Xanadu before, complete with bells and xylophone. :P

Very cool video!

IIRC, AFTK is Mangini's favorite Rush album, so this must be really cool for him  :metal

It looks like they're on the end of Disc 3 of the CD set, as well.

Anyone know if this will be available on Spotify or other streaming services? I'm a Rush fan, but, from here, I'm only interested on DT's version of Xanadu.

Btw, this will be the first time this lineup has recorded a cover.

Somehow I've missed this before, but I've got some insight into this actually.

They recorded this song in venues across europe - they were recording parts in Norway when I did the backstage and interviews that I published for the Fan Club. I had to work around their recording...

Interesting, so does that mean it's actually "live" sort of like the Uncovered official bootleg?

noxon

Not at all - they recorded it using the venues as a recording studio, laying down track by track, and overdubs and stuff..

gzarruk

Well, it makes sense, since you don't rent a big studio only to record one song, so they decided to do it while they were al togehter on tour, and, I guess, they just sent the tracks to Chycki for the mix.

On that note, I kind of surprised Dream Theater has not done more as far as Christmas music. After doing Oh Holy Night back on the I&W tour, I was hoping they'd do something like that in the years to come.
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related

Nice to hear what the band can sound like with a good drum sound from Mangini. LaBrie sounds a bit rough, but instrumentally it's really cool. Myung sounds good too.

KevShmev

Color me pretty disappointed with that cover.  Their playing is a bit too stiff, as were some of the transitions, and JLB's voice is not suited for that song at all.

What's the over/under on how many times the average viewer shouts "Out of the way, fatass!" during that clip? And should we tell Freddie Mercury's estate Mike raided his wardrobe?

I don't get these faithful covers, and maybe never will. Either make the song your own, or I'll just stick with the original.
Maybe the grass is greener on the other side because you're not over there fucking it up.

Holy shit!!! That was incredible!!!  :o Why doesn't he always play like that??  :metal :metal

?

Just checked out the cover on Spotify.... They didn't change the song that much, but then DT's covers have always been pretty faithful to the originals. Well done, but I'd rather listen to the original, and James sounds pretty rough in the "honeydew" part - I mean, even Geddy had a hard time with those notes at that age.

To be fair, the production is the best I've heard on a DT recording in years - Mangini's drums sound great for once and Myung is very audible. I hope the next album will continue along these lines sonically!

SeRoX

Well in Turkey, I can't listen it via youtube or spotify. Weird.

Some people just like to hear one band play another band's song.

EDIT: I think it's time James stopped trying to hit high notes.

Loved it! Maybe a bit too faithful...JP missed an opportunity to shred that solo up some and a few embellishments by JR would have been welcome. JP, if you're reading this, please have JMX occupy his own space like this recording on the next DT record. That fooking rocked.  :metal

I hate to say it, but I'll take JLB's voice over Geddy any day of the week and twice on Sunday. It would be awesome to James do this 25 years ago.

The youtube link doesn't work for me either, and took me a while to find it on Spotify (it's listed on the Rush discography, but it says Dream Theater). Will listen to it right now :tup

Link, pretty please? I can't seem to find it and maybe it's not allowed where I am

McNugg

If it's any help, on Spotify it is listed as a release from 1977, not a new release so it is fairly far down the list.

Adami

Yea, wasn't feeling that cover. Though I've rarely liked any of DT's covers.

Very cool, glad to see DT doing covers and extra songs like this again.  I've always loved DT cover songs, they usually do such an awesome job and I'd add this to the list.

The Walrus

Pretty darn good cover... JLB doing some interesting things

Odd timing... Just a few days ago I came across a video of DT performing The Necromancer from a long time ago... that was good stuff.

MirrorMask

Now, don't know how to say it, but.... I didn't know the song  :D yeah, shame on me, the truth is that you can't really listen to *everything*, so even the major staples sometimes are missed out.

Still, this gave me a chance to listen to the song with fresh years! And if you'd have told me this was a long forgotten and rare track that DT did when Portnoy was in the band, I would have totally believed. The instrumental intro to the song reminded me a LOT of DT, Six Degrees era! Of course this works the other way around - it's DT that got inspired by the feel and mood of Rush, so this transpires in their songwriting, but while the sung section is definitively not DT, the instrumental intro felt a lot like it.

DarkLord_Lalinc

The cover was awesome, and I loved the mix.

As people are saying, I hope this sticks for the next DT album!
