I have found nothing on DT's site but a reliable italian website announced three italian dates where DT will perform entirely Images and Words.

https://metalitalia.com/articolo/dream-theater-tre-date-in-italia-con-tutto-images-and-words/

Here's the page for you Google Translate fans, there's a link directly to TicketOne for the presales.

Weird that this comes apparently out of nowhere!

MirrorMask

Silly me. I didn't check the tour section, I just looked for the News section 'cause "Images and Words played in full" was kinda warranting a headline.

Lynxo

Seems it leaked to other places as well.

I guess they're celebrating the 25 year anniversary?

MirrorMask

Ok, so it's official-not-official, since on FB and on DT.net there's not yet the formal announcement... kinda when the album title for The Astonishing was leaked and they had to announce it.

25 years would be July 7, 2017. I guess they figured they won't be on the road in July so they'll celebrate it earlier. Regardless, I wish I was heading to one of those shows. I will definitely get a bootleg of it. With the advanced notice, hopefully someone will plan to video tape it.

Can't wait to see how Mike plays Take The Time, if i'm not mistaken it's the only song from I&W that hasn't been performed live since he joined the band.

No date announced in the UK yet. I hope they do announce some, or I'll be forced to book a plane back to Italy to attend. :D

TheOutlawXanadu

I hope they play it in the US as well!

I know this is going to be blasphemy to some, but do you guys think they should tune their instruments down to make James' life easier? Or maybe even do an alternate arrangement of some of the trickier songs? As boss as James is, most of the I&W tracks are impossible to sing for 20 year-olds, let alone 50 year-olds. :lol

I'd rather JLB alter the melodies to suit. Better to just have the vocals wrong than the entire song wrong. :P

AboutToCrash

I hope they go down a couple of steps, James will struggle otherwise, Similar to what rush did for 2112. No shame in doing that. Mid range he sounds fantastic

Sir GuitarCozmo

Okay, I may have to relent and go see them again if this happens.  We'll see.

Zydar

I'm undecided about this. I've already seen them twice, and have really no need to see them again. But I&W is my favourite DT album, and they haven't played ANY song off it when I've seen them.

V_R11

Love the idea, but they're going to have to make changes. No way JLB can hit the high note in LTL anymore, for example

If they don't bring this to Finland I might have to take a trip to sweden  :corn

bosk1

Changed the thread title since it has been confirmed.

I'm thinking the same thing.

MirrorMask

Time to brag: I could go all snob on this and say "Eh, been there, done that"  ;D

I actually witnessed DT perform I&W in its entirety, back in 2007 for the 15th anniversary. It was the Gods of Metal festival, DT were second on the bill behind Heaven and Hell, and they started the show with Pull Me Under; nothing strange there, it was a festival, probably a best of setlist, it's only normal to start with your most famous song.

Then James after the song explained the anniversary, and the moment he announced they were performing the whole album, well, do I need to tell you the reaction of the crowd?  ;D

And for the record - he totally nailed the high note in Learning to Live  :metal

rumborak

I'd watch that if they come through Boston.

And thumbs up on the stepping down the songs idea. A vocal variation is OK when you play one I&W song, but for a whole album I'd rather have the original melodies.

bosk1

People also might want to keep in mind that there is often more time in the typical DT set than would be taken up by only playing Images & Words.

hefdaddy42

Well, this is exciting.  Hopefully, they bring that tour to the States as well!

nikatapi

So is there going to be a proper announcement from the band, or some kind of press-release?

zappafrank2112

"Hey, guys, buddies, pals, how's about I do the set if you come through the NYC area?  And maybe Boston?  Hell, how about the whole northeast?

Architeuthis

I'm all for it, this would be a fun show to see. It seems thought that the possibility of a dvd from TA might be dwindling. I could be wrong..

They just posted an update on Facebook, they are playing IaW along with fan favorites. I wasn't planning to go see them again but damn, this sounds really good :azn:

He'd probably play it exactly like it is in the album.  :P

And I'd totally love to see this. It's a shame it seems like it's only happening thousands of miles away.

I hope Jordan decides to play the keyboard solo close to how it is on the album!

Good point. And I already have to say it - poor James...  :lol

I love that they put the sparrow in the I&W advertisement.  Love that sparrow.

Assuming they play it all to a click, I doubt he'll have the opportunity for an extended jam/keyboard solo.

" I offered to join the band again to play Images IN FULL for the WHOLE TOUR but THEY had other ideas. Carpe Diem. I tried...  : ( "

Fritzinger

I will HAVE to see that. Very thrilled.
First thing that came to my mind was also that James might not be able to sing that stuff, especially for a whole tour. I wouldn't mind if they played the whole thing a bit lower.

MirrorMask

It would be cool to have Don't Look Past Me thrown in, but the only guy who probably even remembers the song exists is not in the band since 2010.

A Change of Seasons as encore would be the icing on the cake  :metal I wonder if they will start or finish with Images and Words, maybe for James' voice it would be better to play it right away rather than having it in the second set.
