What is/are your favorite Dream Theater album opener/s? (you may select up to 3 choices)

A Fortune in Lies
Pull Me Under
6:00
New Millennium
Regression / Overture 1928 / Strange Deja Vu
The Glass Prison
As I Am
The Root of All Evil
In the Presence of Enemies Pt. 1
A Nightmare to Remember
On the Backs of Angels
False Awakening Suite / The Enemy Inside
Descent of the NOMACS / Dystopian Overture / The Gift of Music

Dream Theater has always been good in opening their albums. What are your favorites?

For this poll, I opted to bunch songs for the albums that opened with instrumentals. I just always get the sense that the album has not yet properly opened without the first song with vocals.

For my own vote, my favorites are:

1. Descent of the NOMACS / Dystopian Overture / The Gift of Music
2. Regression / Overture 1928 / Strange Deja Vu
3. The Root of All Evil

BlobVanDam

I went with SFAM/SDOIT/ToT, with TROAE very close. What a great run of album openers!
Heck, there's really not a bad option among these, except maybe OTBOA which is a weak way to kick off the album imo.

I agree. I think they should have opened with Bridges in the Sky, which is what they did in the tour.

BlobVanDam

Agreed! Just a little while ago I forgot that BITS actually wasn't the opener, because it worked so well on the tour with the chant intro and then BAM metal riff. :metal

fischermasamune

Very good poll. I'm still undecided among 6:00, TGP, AIA and the combos of SFAM and TA.

Crow

troae is easily the best, picked 6:00 and TGP for the other two
turns out signatures are fundamentally broken now so here's my passive-aggressive signature about signatures instead

erwinrafael

I find it funny that the three-song combos from the two concept albums are still much shorter than TGP and ANTR. ANTR is such a long opener.  :lol

ANTR is such a long opener.  :lol

It actually goes by pretty quickly. I just wish I liked it more.

ROOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRR

Train of Naught

Enigmachine

SDoIT, SC and TA. DotN/DO/TGoM being the favourite out of those, just such a grandiose and engaging way to begin the album.

Outcrier

Viking of the Sagas

Systematic Chaos has one of the most kickass openings ever.

new Millennium is nice.

Pull Me Under is great.

BlackInk

The Glass Prison is probably my favorite song here, but I think The Root of All Evil works better as an album opener. Went with ItPoE1 for the third option.

Dystopian Overture is glorious. DO/TGOM is the opener in my 1-disc DT mix CD. Such a beautiful piece of music.

I went with 6:00, but it's basically tied with PMU.
My new single Retro/Active: https://open.spotify.com/track/3iQoVlyVYG9e8w7wPZweNi?si=131917e0c9d74317

Easily.

Those three would be my least favourite openers.  :lol

JayOctavarium

Went with (in no particular order):

ITPOE
Regression/Overture1928/SDV
The Glass Prison

and if I could choose 2 more I'd add ANTR and 6:00

Tomislav95

Regression / Overture 1928 / Strange Deja Vu, The Glass Prison and The Root of All Evil

TAC

1. Scenes
2. SC
3. DT12

TGP, AIA, and TROAE all start out  :metal, but they are all too long and bloated, and to me, are ultimately boring.
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

54_diplomats

1. The Glass Prison
2. SFAM
3. 6:00

Honorable mention to The Root of All Evil.

Least favorite is On the Backs of Angels

ariich

The Glass Prison is easily my favourite, but my other votes went for 6:00 and New Millenium. Funny that with my top-tier DT albums other than SDOIT (I&W, ADTOE), I'm not that keen on the opener.

ChuckSteak

6:00 by far.

It has nothing to do with the song being better/worse than the others listed, but for an opening track this one serves the purpose perfectly.

erwinrafael

Yeah. 6:00 is waking up with that early 1990s angst, which sets up the mood of Awake perfectly.  :tup

Prog Snob

Regression/O1928/SDV, The Glass Prison, and ITPOE Part 1

And since TGP is such a killer song from a brilliant album, I'm going to listen to 6DOIT. It has been a while since I heard it.

Destiny Of Chaos

ItPoE & ANtR are my two favorite DT songs.. so that's where my votes went.

The left and right coast have it.  ;)

namgalsipsclar

I went with Scenes, Glass Prison and 6:00.

Pull Me Under and Dystopian Overture etc were damn close though

Regression, The Root of all Evil and False Awakening Suite (shame the songs after FAS are a little dissapointing) Honourable mention to Pull me Under
