Best DT Solos

I searched for awhile, and couldn't find a thread on this. At least not a recent one. Unless I'm blind of course.

With that said, what are your favorite solos in DT's discography? And I mean ANY solo. Not just from JP (though I'm sure many will be his).

Personally, nothing has matched the JP solo in Breaking All Illusions. It's freaking perfect.

Under a Glass Moon and Goodnight Kiss are close seconds, and I also have a thing for JR's brief solo in On the Backs of Angels. His piano tone is flawless. Absolutely beautiful.

Honorable mention to the bass intro to Panic Attack. It's not really a solo I know, but it's one of my favorite JM moments of all time.

Agreed on 'Breaking.'
I consider 'Learning to live' has 2 solos, so i'll go with the second one.

surely the well known solos like The Spirit Carries on, Best of Times, Under a Glass Moon is good.

But i Really feel the Solo in Scarred needs more recognition

My all-time favorite solo would be TSCO

I'll go by each member.

JP: Either The Best of Times or The Spirit Carries On. I can't decide which I like more.
JR: Definitely the moog solo in Octavarium.
JM: The Dance of Eternity gets my vote here.
MM: Enigma Machine blew my mind when I first heard it.
KM: The solo right before the last chorus in Take the Time.
DS: The last keyboard solo in A Change of Seasons.
MP: His finest single moment as a drummer is the ending solo in Finally Free.

So many incredible solos already mentioned. I'd like to add two of my favorites:

- The JP/JR unison in Blind Faith

- The JP/JR unison in Afterlife (on Score)

Sure, since these are unisons you might quibble that they don't count as solos, and I take that point. But they're still two of my faves (in addition to others posted already).

Edit: I should mention that these are in my opinion also prime examples of JP/JR/MP/JM just killing it working together. The more I think about it the less these seem like solos and the more they seem like examples of a group of musicians at the peak of their abilities working together to make something sonically delicious.

I think Petrucci's second solo in Lie often gets overlooked. Most of his amazing solo's have a kind of slow and uplifting feeling to them but Lie is very much the opposite. It begins moody and intriguing and becomes faster and more panicky as it goes along. More than any other solo I think this one manages to capture the feeling of an entire album.

Right up there with Razor's Edge, Lines in the Sand, Under a Glass Moon, Voices, Spirit Carries On etc.

Fairly recent. My favorite JP solo now is Our New World. The melody os great, very singable, and captures the triumphant feel of the song. Short but no note wasted.

JR - On the backs of angels (Clearly number 1! Always loved it when he play with a clean piano sound)
KM - want to mention band moments here, the ending of Learning to live and Scarred
JP - The best of Times
MP - As i Am after the solo and after the last chorus, also like to mention the drumming during the guitar solo of Constant Motion
DS - Lines in the Sands intro
JM - ending of Learning to Live when he is on his own starting the big thing of!

I Agree. In fact, while a lot of Myung's work on WDAU may not technically count as solo, it's uniformly excellent in its execution, in that it stands out with a voice and always contributes to the overall sound of the song it's a part of.
