The unison around 4:40 In A New Beginning reminds me of the unison in The Count Of Tuscany, anyone else?

Vandalism

During the verses of ANB, I find myself singing "tell me does this hurt you........said the faceless man....Can you move all of your fingers.......cna you try your best to stand?"

The Opening of Heavens Cove sounds like On the Backs of Angels combined with "Still Lovin You" by the scorpions.
I noticed these two immediately. I'm ashamed to admit that I didn't notice the Hemispheres melody in Brother, Can You Hear Me? until people started pointing it out, although I'm a huge Rush fan. :blush

This part of Dystopian Overture is basically the theme from Luigi's Mansion. Noticed that right away and can never not hear it. Pretty sure it's a coincidence although I like the idea that sometime during the writing process, Petrucci went like "Dude, Jordan, remember that rad vocal line from that Luigi game?"

Heaven's Cove chorus reminds me The Unforgiven III by Metallica

KevShmev

I've been listening to Rush's Hemispheres for nearly 25 years, and I still have no idea what some of you are talking about in regards to a melody from it being on this record.

The beginning of Heaven's Cove is eerily similar to the second half of Pink Floyd's Is There Anybody Out There? That couldn't be more obvious.

A New Beginning 2:35-2:48 has a Bohemian Rhapsody vibe to me

Ben_Jamin

For some reason the ending of Begin Again makes me think of Earthbound/The Mother Series.

Three Days has that Diablo Swing Orchestra feel going.

Posted this already somewhere in The Astonishong thread but the chorus of Moment of Betrayal reminds me of the "my soul will burn" part of Iron Maiden's The thin line between love and hate.

Wanted to hear feedback, and it has been great to share and learn others feedback.  From this, I will be checking out the feedback of the offerings.

A new one:  'Brother, Can You Hear Me?'.....well, it is a combo of 'In The Name Of God' fadeout (vocal 'The Battle Hymn of the Republic').

and.......how often does one get a chuckle during a DT album?  This has a ton.  To think, the last time I felt mentally 'UP' during a DT track, was 'Solitary Shelf'...........and who da thunk it was about a topic as depressing as autism/Asberger's/bi-polar/schizophrenia...?

The middle of X Aspect gives me a "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast" vibe, particularly JR's organ playing. How's that for a random association.

Well I think I would've chuckled during Solitary Shelf too. :lol

Listening to Our New World today and it was totally giving me a " You're The Voice " vibe.  :metal.

I love both songs.

Same Kotow! Both songs

I'm still digesting this album, but I know for sure I heard some Yes and another song that I couldn't place. Will take some more time to figure it out for myself lol

Instead of saying what songs, I'll give you the lyrics I can't stop hearing:

"Brother Can You Hear Me?
I am just a man
Known across the desert
Beyond the shadows in the sand"

Check this at 12.44 mark and it will surely take you less than 25 years to notice what we are talking about  :)

Heaven's cove intro makes me think of Diablo 2 12 strings theme :) And I love it
Later there is a james bond vibe with chords.

Lord Nafaryus ... Queen for sure.

Three Days ... the opening vocals sound like Queen, but the rest of the song sounds so much like Savatage from the Poets and Madmen era that I  can hear Jon Oliva doing the vocals.

A New Beginning - 4:43

Metropolis - 4:30

That one I didn't notice before. Nice!

The ones that remind me of "Metropolis part 1" (at 0:45) are:

  • "Ravenskill" (at 2:30)
  • "Moment of Betrayal" (at 0:30)

I know it's really a short 'phrase', but they are the exact same notes, over a heavy music background, in E minor. So maybe not much of a coincidence?

Also: I was in some sort of a "Yes phase" 7 years ago, but mainly their '90s music. Obviously the intro to "A Life Left Behind" sounds a lot like Yes, as many of you have pointed out. I'm particularly reminded of the intros to "Miracle Of Life" & "New Language".

Also, "Moment Of Betrayal" at 3:33 reminds of something from Keys To Ascension, but I can't remember what. Maybe "Mind Drive"?

pretorios

The beginning of The Walking Shadow reminds of of a particular Slayer song, but I can't think of it at the moment.

If you recognise these Rush lyrics you may recognise a very similar recurring melody in The Astonishing:

I have memory and awareness
But I have no shape or form
As a disembodied spirit
I am dead and yet unborn

I have passed into Olympus
As was told in tales of old
To the city of immortals
Marble white and purist gold.

It's funny, I hadn't seen this on the thread honestly, but I kept finding that when Brother Can You Hear Me was in my head, it would always turn into that section of Hemispheres.  I came back here to see if anyone noticed it too.  I guess I'm not alone!

 I knew someone was going to do that, post the Rush song, even though I have heard it a million times to where I know it like the back of my hand. :lol :lol

The first time I heard 'The Gift of Music' I was reminded of 'Spirit of the Radio' by Rush, because of the title and some of the tone/pacing of that song. But their influence has never exactly been a secret, so that's quite a boring observation really :)

This is stupid, but I laugh everytime I see the title "Whispers on the wind" because it reminds me of the movie Clerks, when Randall is reading out all the Porno movie titles (the first movie title is also called Whispers on the wind if you haven't seen the film)... Silly, yes. Juvenile, yes. But that's me...  :rollin

My wife and I also call 'Our New World ' the "Baywatch song", as we feel it's a cross between Journey, and a song they would use in a montage scene in a Baywatch episode... Now, we love both Journey and Baywatch, so this isn't a bad thing...  :lol

I never made a connection between either of those things, but being a huge fan of both Journey, and of anything Jimi Jamison (who did the Baywatch theme), I'd have no problem with it. :lol
I can sorta see the Journey comparison, being upbeat melodic rock with the chorus harmonies. DT have drawn inspiration from Journey before, so it's not too crazy a thought.
As I've said before, my first thought for ONW was actually About to Crash, at the 1:52 mark.

Jimi did indeed do the Baywatch theme, we were more of the opinion it's like the 3-4 minute montage scene setting music that appeared in most episodes depending on the story arc... If I'm not mistaken, C.J. (Pammie Anderson) was playing the saxophone on some rocks at one stage... Maybe she was playing 'Another Day'...  :rollin ;D
