A New Beginning (the song)...really?

As I listened through the album, A New Beginning really stuck out for me, in a Fantastic way...that is, up until the FADE OUT? ??? >:(

It ruins the song and flow.  And for an album/story that was designed to be performed live (when fade out can't happen), why the heck would they do this?  That solo was so good, so sexy, I was blown away....until the FADE OUT.

I know this will go nowhere, but if only DT could provide a proper non-fade out version that I can use to replace it.

Thanks for letting me vent.

I don't like "fade outs" either, but the song is so amazing that it just doesn't bother me at all.

Jinx

I like to think that without the fade out, JP just carried on with the solo forever.

senecadawg2

I said it in the main thread, but I think this song could've been my favorite on the album until the fade out. I think it's such a good solo and such a tease.

Kind of reminds me of the Best of Times solo. But this one is a bit more frustrating for me, because I felt like it had a lot more space to grow even still. I'd be curious to hear what they'll do with it in concert.

And if JP does go on forever, I'd at least like to hear much more of that "forever"....and cross fade it into the next song?   :metal

Fadeouts suck, period. And can't be done live, so it's baffling that they would have purposefully done that on an album DESIGNED to be performed live...

EXACTLY MY THOUGHT WHEN I HEARD IT

DarkLord_Lalinc

And I think that was the whole idea. I have no problems with the fade out.

If I die tomorrow, I'll be alright because I believe that after we're gone the solo carries on.

Oh lawd.
:lol First the mensa-pause and now this. Bravo, sir. Bravo!

I honestly didn't have too much of a problem with it but I much prefer solos with a lot of heart and ingenuity than I do ones that go on for an extended amount of time; but I will say that it initially took me by surprise.

RaasMah

Best JP solo in the album without a doubt. Up there with his best ever solos.

A New Beginning was my favourite song on the album on my first listen. But for some reason i didn't notice the solo that much. I found it quite uninteresting and a bit too long. I can't wait to get to it on my second listen and find out how wrong i am.

Implode

This was my thought when I heard the fade out as well. Strange choice for an otherwise excellent song.

MikeDavis67

So far one of my favorites on the album...  Didnt get bothered by the fade out.

ASacrificedSon

OMG Rain. Let me share my share of rage in fading out.
Ok so I was listening to The Best of Times and I was entranced by Petrucci's ending solo. I was closing my eyes to his glorious solo and guess what happened?
IT FADED OUT......UGH
It killed the entire song. Mind you, fading out for TDEN was not bad at all but to ruin a perfect solo? Really hated it.
To get the non faded version, I had to listen to listen to Portnoy's drumming for it and it cut off the introduction....

1 - Too funny
2 - I had to edit that song as well...like cut off the entire intro....the solo fade sucked too....

:omg: Three minutes and ten seconds isn't enough ?!

That's most band's entire songs. FFS it has to end sometime ::)

RoeDent

Some say that Petrucci was forced to stop his solo for The Best of Times (which had carried on endlessly for well over six years) in order to perform the solo for A New Beginning.

Kotowboy

ANYWAY...

Back to A New Beginning.

Mangini's "Billie Jean" beat under the solo . . . :metal

Easily one of my favorite songs on the album. While I wished they didn't fade it out and agree it's a weird choice, it doesn't bother me. I'm curious to hear it live.

MirrorMask

Live they'll have to end it up somehow  ;D

I too don't like fade outs, I accept them only when there's a somehow thematic reason behind it, a dramatic effect, when it's done just because it's a bit of a cop-out... does anybody know where the trend for fade-outs come from? it's a radio thing since many hit singles fade out with the chorus repeated over and over?

kirksnosehair

First they have that problem with "Pull Me Under" cutting out at the end and now this?

OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!!!!

JP be all

*Shakes hands in pain at end of solo*

YA BETCH, really.

splent

I really don't care. The song is amazing with the fade out anyway. Maybe they couldn't figure out a way to transition effectively. Who knows what they'll do live.

Just heard this one for the first time and the fadeout doesn't bother me at all.  It gives that "it goes on forever" vibe.

Exactly. It's like the ending to Scarred and Finally Free.

DragonAttack

Maybe the fade was a bit quick, but I'm OK with it

To help cure 'The Best of Times' fade, here's this

It has the instrumental version WITH the lead guitars included.

I didn't notice it the three listen throughs it had gotten

Crow

i just don't think it makes sense from a musical standpoint to fade out there, though
it didn't have a "this is the end" feel to it like take the time or scarred do with their fade-outs, or even the best of times
it just

ends???
turns out signatures are fundamentally broken now so here's my passive-aggressive signature about signatures instead

Progmetty

I agree with the OP, I feel fade outs are lazy and should completely retire from music, write an outro bro.
Small potatoes though, this album has much more pros than cons IMO
