Since THIS was recorded.

No in all seriousness, you can really tell the bands future if you listen to the demos. For those who have listened to them, what is your take on them (Collins aside).

I sense a raw sound of a band trying to find their voice, either stuffing everything complex into one song or trying to find their way throughout a longer song. I think it's very good for a demo.

Agreed on all points. They were definitely showing off and trying to get everything that they could do into one demo. I like that rawness though.

TheAtliator

They wrote some of the greatest music ever written 30 years ago, and still continue to produce music up to that level. And in those 30 years, the quality has consistently never dropped once, yet they've also never started sinking into a formulaic sound. WOW. What other band has EVER done that?

AND those are consecutive 30 years, not even with a break.  :metal :metal

I am not a fan of the demos.  At all.

The trajectory from the demos to WDADU to I&W is nothing short of remarkable.

I was thinking that yesterday while listening to I&W.   Even though i like WDADU better than most on DTF , there would be few consecutive albums in rock/metal history where there was such a huge progression/improvement (even aside from the change in vocalist)

Demos don't thrill me much.

That first album though....  Wow!

I agree for the most part except WDADU would have been a great album with James as the singer instead of a Steve Perry wannabe (no offense to Charlie...his voice didn;t fit)

Compare the wimpy delivery of "I am the Killing Hannnnnd" line on WDADU to the way it was delivered on Live at the Marquee

Steve Perry wannabee?  Where do you get that from?

No way, Charlie and Steve Perry do not match up at all on vocal range OR timbre.

I disagree.  The songs are still inferior.

That album would have been BETTER with James, but by no means would it be a GREAT album.

After 30 years... I wonder how much longer DT will be together? Not to be grim, but they are lucky if they have another 10-15 years in them (at least as far as touring), especially since Rudess is almost 60... Rush made it to 41 years, and thats pretty good... But it doesn't seem as if their creativity is slowing down, which seems promising.

Jordan will be 60 this year so he's probably the one who would have to fold it in first in regards to age. Could they continue on with another keyboard player? I'm sure they could. James' voice is probably the bigger factor. I don't think they continue without James. Thoughts?

hefdaddy42

They could keep producing new music with a different keyboard player.

But their live shows would change quite a bit.  I can't imagine there are very many keyboard players who can do what Rudess does, so recreating his material live would be difficult.

I agree that JLB would be the bigger problem.

It's actually depressing thinking that in a few years they could start flirting with the idea of folding it in. We've been listening to them for so long, and following them passionately, that it would really be hard to imagine there being no more releases.

The intro to Another Won is amazing.
