If you could pick ANYONE to cover a song by DT, who would it be? Which songs would you choose? Which version of a particular band would you pick? Would you bring in some guest musicians to make the sound just right? Don't worry about limiting your idea(s) to singes and musicians that are still with us. I don't care if you want to bring Elvis and the Beatles into it. I just want to hear as many ideas that whoever wants to participate can come up with.

MY problem is I think I might have too MANY ideas...but I'm going to give some examples here-

A Fortune in Lies-Megadeth

Instrumental version of Take the Time-Dixie Dregs

Surrounded-Asia

6:00-Blackmore/Gillan/Glover/Lord/Paice version of Deep Purple

Lie-Metallica

A Change of Seasons-Anderson/Howe/Squire/Wakeman/White version of Yes, with Joe satriani guesting on guitar

Hollow Years-Emerson, Lake & Palmer

Trial of Tears-1974-1980 version of Kansas

Just Let Me Breathe-Guns 'N' Roses

Octavarium-Banks/Collins/Hackett/Rutherford version of Genesis

Stream of Consciousness-Joe Satriani with his current band consisting of Mike Keneally on keyboards and Marco Minneman on drums, but also including Dave Larue on Bass

Prophets of War-Original version of Queensryche

The Count of Tuscany-Rush

I TOLD you I had a LOT of ideas! I'm sure there will be more...

I think Haken doing Through My Words / Fatal Tragedy would be cool, as well as Circus Maximus doing Pull Me Under or Symphony X doing Under A Glass Moon.

CDrice

Never Enough-Muse
As I Am-Metallica
I Walk Beside You-U2
The Looking Glass-Rush
The Great Debate-Tool

I would like to hear Extreme play a funky version of  "The dance of eternity"   I think Nuno could really do something with that song.
Since Mike Mangini was once in the band he can play drums.
Phish could play "the count of tuscany"
Neal Schon   "Hells kitchen"
Van Hagar    "in the name of God"
ZZ Topp  "the dark eternal night"

Under A Glass Moon

I actually saw a mixture of Circus Maximus and Seventh Wonder do a cover of Under a Glass Moon live in a concert in Oslo some years back. It was really cool.

Would be fun to hear Iron Maiden doing some songs, maybe Pull Me Under or Endless Sacrifice. I kinda came into DT after an Iron Maiden phase a few* years ago, and those were their first "Metal" songs to click with me. Bruce Dickinson would probably be fun to listen to singing those.

*I initially wrote "a few", but it's been 8-9 years already. And I'm considered a newbie. Time goes by...

Does it ever happen that older bands cover songs from younger ones? It always seems like people cover those who came before them.

It would be fun to hear Iron Maiden cover some dream theater, but to be honest i don't think it would sound that good. They dont have a keyboard player, and the three guitarists are no where near the technical abilities of JP. But i do think a Dream Theater song with Bruce on vocals would be very cool to hear!

Barely ever does, but this is a "what if" thread so I suppose we can go wild

Motorhead covered Metallica's Whiplash, but I can't think of any other instances.

King Postwhore

Um, Johnny Cash for one.  He covered NIN & U2.

Van Halen was named for the Van Halen BROTHERS! NOT for who the SINGER is/was! They did NOT change their name when they changed SINGERS! If that were the case, why wasn't Van Halen 3 called "VAN CHERONE???"

Evermind

Because all the caps-lock and three question marks in "VAN CHERONE???" wouldn't make a good band name? Seriously, I'm at loss.

I've been trying to think of a song that would be perfect for Maiden, but so far I'm drawing a blank---

However, here is a list of POSSIBLE suggestions:

The Killing Hand
Under a Glass Moon
Burning My Soul
Strange Deja Vu
War Inside My Head/
The Test That Stumped Them All
Panic Attack
The Dark Eternal Night
A Rite of Passage

I don't know if ANY of these would be a fit for them, but who knows...maybe they could change the arrangement to fit their style...?...

I just get really ANNOYED with shit like that, and had to get it out of my system.

Lie-Metallica

It's hard to imagine Metallica using 7 strings.

Lars Ulrich wouldn't get past the first 3 seconds anyway, so no need to even bother about counting strings.

Why? Stuff like 'Van Hagar' is just a way to quickly identify an era of the band, not to change the name of it.

phospheneSOI

I'd like to hear Haken do a song, Protest the Hero would be cool too.

Kotowboy

I'd like to hear Noel Gallagher cover The Spirit Carries On.

Never thought of it that way. But you have to admit that BOTH DLR and SH have dropped in and out of VH more than once, so it's hard to define it by "eras."

The David Oakes Experiment

It would have to be a piss easy one as i'm not a very good guitarist at all :lol

Prog Snob

The Silent Man.... That has probably been the easiest DT song to learn on the guitar.

Bertie_Wooster

Van Hagar is a common term many people use.  I did not invent it.   David Lee Roth would sound terrible singing any Dt song.

That or The Spirit Carries On.

The solo in that is hard...well towards the end. I never finished it.

Yeah and I couldn't cover a DT song and do my own solo :lol i'd get murdered.

I like Sammy a lot better than Dave too. But I think it would be better for him to sing a song like Just Let Me Breathe, Burning My Soul, or Maybe Surrounded. But I don't know if VH could do justice to a longer, more complicated DT song like ItNoG.
