I'm not a fan of any of their guitars but the JPMM shape is just way way way nicer than that FUGLY Ibanez Jem.

Nooooo.

I played a JEM for most of my "career" and loved it........even though the neck was a bit thin for me.

I thought the picture by Kotow was a knock off/custom but looks like it was one of the first.  It does sorta suck :lol

I don't think JP plays quite as fast or cleanly as the best "shredders", but I dislike those kinds of players for valuing speed and flash too highly over melody and taste. That's not to say these are mutually exclusive things, but I find that none of them balance all of the elements as well as JP.

Even JP's balance has shifted over the years. It most notably started on ToT, where he did a lot more shredding, and ever since his bluesy side has been somewhat subdued.

But I love things like Breaking All Illusions where there is a lot more balance.
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

You've probably come to the wrong place if you don;t want jokes...

Anyway, my feeling is, what good is knowing a lot of fancy words if you don;t have anything to say?

I think what matters to me most is his ability to play in an ensemble.  He does all those runs and licks often in unison with JR.   I think that is more impressive, how he can do it not just on his "own timetable" (in my opinion, a lot of the shredders get a little loose with time when they are at full speed) but in synch with the rest of the band.

Agreed.  It s much harder play unisons like JP and JR than only play alone

Not just unisons between JP and JR, sometimes the bass and drums are thrown into the unison as well.  I love that run in The Darkest of Winters where Myung is soloing in unison with both JP and DS.  IMO, a lot of the coolest parts of DT instrumentalism is how they play together.

I think i know more about guitar technique than my friends here in dt fórum. It s funny cause dt is the most technical band in the  world and dt fans treat it like a ghost. What s the problem talk about it?

Because to love something is also to be able to poke fun at it. We all love and appreciate Dream Theater and their technical abilities but we also like to have a laugh as well and I'm sure the band themselves enjoy that, that's why we got animations of them trying to steal a diamond during Enigma Machine, it's why we have the action figure videos and why we got the video about James Labrie driving a forklift on tour.

Certainly JP is a great shredder, but not the best in the world as far as concerns pure technique.
Rustey Cooley* is probably "the man" if you look at the pure technical prowess, but his guitar playing is absolutely ...meh...uninteresting.
JP is a much better rounded guitar player, overall...

As concerns the pure technical discussion, a lot of "internet experts.." tend to compare JP's playing on the records with other guys shredding on youtube videos just for the sake of playing fast...
Of course this are silly and unfair comparisons, because JP can play much much much more technically than what you hear on the DT records, but he simply doesnt' need to do that...

As concerns pure "taste", I don't like JP playing too much outside Dream Theater; I think his style fits perfectly with the band, but is a bit too "mathematical" to be interesting in a solo guitar album- I don't like Suspended Animation that much, to be honest..

My favourite is Joe Satriani, that is a few leagues below as concerns pure technique, even though IMHO he has an incredible control over the "voice" of the guitar, is able to deliver all range of emotions and has created a unique "space-surfer" sound that I really love...but here we are in the personal tastes arena..

* Not considering of course Masha The Cat, my little four-legged pupil that you can see practising with me in my profile picture.
Her four-paws tapping technique is absolutely...ASTONISHING!  :metal

Thanks you erciccio. The best answer.  For sure petrucci can play much much technically licks if he want it.

To be fair, I'm not entirely sure what the OP is asking, so I'm not entirely sure how to answer.  Is it asking (basically) "Is JP as good at shredding as others or no"?

I completely forgot about the opening post. This has turned into one of those free-for-all threads.

Oh and the Pantera/Yngwie donut thing was on an Yngwie home video I think. I'll try and look for it later on. Maybe YouTube has it.

Prog Snob

Nevermind, it was a Pantera video.   :lol

Here is the short clip of it.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--wNB5uZQwE

Pure win.  The security guard looked like "Yep.  That's Yngwie Malmsteen."

Probably, but as you're well aware, that's a guitarist thing.  Has been for decades.  :lol

That said, I think that Paul Gilbert may be the very best at whahíbrido pickingant.  I mean the guy can play guitar with his ass, for crying out loud!

Almost without fail, a statement like that indicates that you DON'T.
Not to let this delve into a dick measuring contest, but I was the guitar player in a DT tribute band, so I had to learn about 15 DT songs or so on guitar, all sections including solos. It's quite likely that you can't say the same. How many DT songs can you play from beginning to end?

Usually, this is indeed the case.  I'm always curious how long people that say this kind of thing have been playing and, more importantly, how much they've put that experience to the test at live gigs.

In 25 years of playing guitar and 27 years of the study of music, I've played nearly 350 gigs in 20 states and one foreign country.  I've forgotten more about beating the ever-loving shit out of my guitar than some people will ever learn.

You will never once, ever EVER hear me make a statement that's even in the same ballpark as this.

wolven74

JP is an amazing shredder, but shredding is not his strongest attribute. His appeal to me is his ability to play with emotion, and to make me feel something when he plays. Shredders don't always have that ability. They can go fast, with a lot of arpeggios and hammer ons, tapping and all that, but speed does not convey emotion.

Sir GuitarCozmo

Speed can convey emotion though, if used judiciously.

Usually if someone makes an outlandish comment like that, it's for attention, and he's getting that while he sits on his iPad whacking off with peanut butter. Don't feed the trolls. Let them feed themselves...peanut butter.

I cannot bear Steve Vai or Joe Satriani. They're the guitarist versions of Mangini.

100% technique. Almost no emotion.

I've yet to hear Vai or Stach play anything as uplifting and melodic as The Best Of Times solo - at least without sprinkling it with " hey look what i can do " tricks.

Wow.

You clearly don´t know what you are saying.

Those two have dozens of heart melting melodies. In Satriani music the melodies are the core of his art.
