I *just* bought Live Scenes from New York.  :o  ;D

I am listening to the performance of Metropolis 1 on this for the 1st time as I am writing this. LaBrie is so impressive, I think this is my fave version I have heard to date.

What is your fave live version of this song?

Edit:  *Myung's Bass Sound on The Mirror. Nuff Said. Amaze-balls. Great stuff on this record

Probably Live at the Marquee but I only heard official live recordings and only a few bootleg versions, I need to find some more

Marquee's is sang so outrageously bombastic it's not even funny, and everything about that performance is kickass, but I still pick the Live Scenes from NY one... it has a nice punch, a good overall feel, and I love how at the end it kicks back in after the "Before the leaves are fallen" bit. Makes me wanna jump at the "There must be the third and last dance" part. Memorable performance by a memorable show, also it doesn't hurt that it flows into The Mirror  :hefdaddy

I really can't decide which one is my favorite but I'll mention (since it wasn't mentioned) version from Luna Park. I think James sounds great on it and that jazzy jam at the end is awesome :)
But version form LSFNY is special, too. Or should I say, every song on that live CD is. It has raw energy every release after it unfortunately miss.

Score. After that performance, other remarkable live versions are:

- LaLP (I reaaaaaally love the ending with the latin music vibes)
- WDADRU

Not really sure if I can properly answer the OP's question since I rarely focus on specific performances. However, I do take note of what they might change from the studio version, so for me, I'd pick the version that they played from 1996-1998. You can hear the full version of it on the 12/14/96 Official Bootleg, and the first half of it on OiaL.

Got to be the When Dream And Day Re-unite Bootleg version for me. The trade-off / jam between Jordan, Derek and John is great, but Charlie Dominici's extra vocals really make it special.

Good call on When Dream and Day Reunite. That's probably my #1. But really, the real question would be the WORST version, because they're all pretty great for different reasons. Marquee has LaBrie's great vocals (as does New York from the same year); Metropolis '96 has some cool jams; Live Scenes has the energy; Score has the live intro and the orchestra; Luna Park has the GENIE and is pretty energetic itself. It's just a great song all around.

Any that didn't have the extended bull shit break before the final verse.

Oh come on that break is lovely! well, I specifically like how they stop with the main theme still carrying on while James salutes the crowd, when they go into an instrumental tangent that derails from the original song I agree it becomes overdone, but as long it's just prolonging the "Before the leaves are fallen" restart while staying on course with the main melody, I love it each and every time.

LSFNY.

LaBrie knew his range and didn't attempt the wicked high notes (on most of the songs) yet he sings with more passion than a lot of performances.  Everyone else was on their game.  I still get chills during the "especially special" part.  Even though it was linguistically awkward, it doesn't take away from the emotion of the moment knowing that they finally "made it" (i.e. being in a good position where they were successful and in charge of their own careers)

Barring the vocal mishaps, my favorite is the Slipknot version on WDADR.
