In the spirit of getting a new snippet from The Astonishing, I though we could look back at the times when a DT album has left us most hyped for its release (unless its PMU where it came after the album), & gave us a great representation of what the album meant musically. Basically, which one's the best?

Some of you may be wondering what Blind Faith or These Walls are doing here. Well, the former was released on the Fan Club EP 'Four Degrees Of Radio Edits' as the first track, being the closest thing SDOIT had to a single (along with the other edits on that EP as well, I'm just counting BF as it was the first track). The latter on the other hand was released as a single, but only for radio play: not to the general public.

So now that that's out of the way, vote for the best one!

*counting the radio edit, not the full song

Train of Naught

The only single on this list I've actually experienced during the time of its purpose was The Enemy Inside, and now The Gift of Music. If we were choosing best song that is also a lead single, I'd say Home, but if I would go with "most hype-building single" I could only say The Enemy Inside.

PMU wasn't the first single from I&W.  It was either Another Day or Take the Time, I think.  I recall the band was somewhat surprised at the radio play of PMU.

Also, all of these songs are mediocre or even significantly below average compared to the album they're on.  Their lead singles are never their most impressive songs, for whatever reason.

I probably have to go with PMU, even though it's maybe only the 4th or 5th best song on that album, just because 1) every single song on that album is good anyway, and 2) most of the other songs are unimpressive given each album's other content.

OTBOA is the other one I would consider, but it's not quite as good as PMU, and it's also overshadowed by BITS and BAI at the very least

I wouldn˙t call Silent man mediocre

Considering that PMU was what pulled me into the DT fold when it was aired on Headbanger's Ball I have to choose that one...

Did they actually release Another Day by the time Pull Me Under got big? I was under the impression that when the album launched they went away on tour, and when they got back (with plans of releasing Another Day) Pull Me Under was all the rage so they decided to make that the lead single instead. I could be remembering wrong though.

Great question! I haven't been a fan of DT that long so I wouldn't know which one left me more hyped for the album . . . but as for the best, as a full song I'd choose Blind Faith, but I'll have to check the radio edit for that and see if I like it as much. brb ;)

Blind faith for me too. There is just something about it that i really love. Top 10 DT song for me.

Either Home or Blind Faith would have been my choice for the best song, but On The Back Of Angels and The Enemy Inside holds a special place for me since I was a fan during the release of those singles.

So I'll chose The Enemy Inside since I distinctly remember grinning like an idiot because of how ridiculous (in a good way) I thought it was the first few times I listened to it.

Blind Faith, with Home not too far behind.

If we count Blind Faith, that one, obviously
But I think we shouldn't include it, they wouldn't release a song that good for a lead single

Possibly.  I'm not actually sure now to tell you the truth.

That's true, but I'd put both other pieces of AMBI slightly above it, and a couple other songs on the album as well.  It's not that it's bad, it's just that the rest of the album is so strong.  Also, I don't live in Europe, so I'm not sure if that counts for me.  :D

Rodni Demental

Oh God radio edits. They are supposed to cut out filler but they end up removing some of the best or unique parts. I remember being significantly hyped when I first heard OTBOA upon awaiting the new album so I'll go for that.

Setlist Scotty

Went with PMU since it's the one that got the band the most attention. Personal runner up for me would be Home, altho the radio edit of it takes away a lot of the good stuff in the song.

jsbru, not sure where you got your info, but I'm almost positive that PMU was the lead single from IaW. It was later that they released Take the Time, and finally Another Day. Pretty sure that for Take the Time and Another Day, the promo single releases of these songs coincided with the videos that were released for them (unlike PMU, which was a budget video shot after PMU had already started getting serious air time on the radio).
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

The Stray Seed

As much as I love Blind Faith, nothing can top Pull Me Under in terms of sheer hype.

Since based on the other posts here Blind Faith was a radio edit, I'm going to have to pick These Walls. If BF was released as a full song for the single, I'd pick that and TW would be second.

TW did have a radio edit, although it is quite hard to find.

I still have the radio edits of These Walls and Panic Attack saved back before the album came out. They're crappy quality recorded off a stream/radio. :lol

Darkstarshades

I'd say On The Backs of Angels had the most hype out of the rest, because of everyone wondering how would MM sound.

Would it be against forum rules for you to post them?

BlobVanDam

I would say so, yes. They're not good quality anyway, and the album versions are far superior without all of the cuts.

pcs90

So, what was cut out of TW? I'm sure the intro before the actual riff starts was cut but I cut that from mine too. I mean that song moves along pretty quickly as it is.

Basically everything without singing was cut down, intro, outro, instrumental section etc.
