Okay...

You KNOW I HAD to do it...so...

You should have been EXPECTING this:

....Why?

Why NOT???

After reading through this entire thread, I can honestly say that none of these ideas appeal to me in the slightest.  If Mike Portnoy ever were to play with Dream Theater again, I am thinking it would probably be to play Metropolis or A Change of Seasons as a one-off song during a set.  And either one of those would actually be pretty cool.  But anything else...?  Zero desire to ever see that.

I'd love to see how Portnoy would play this newer, Mangini stuff. We've seen him play everything else.
I don't care about 12SS at all, I love TGP,I like TDS, the other songs are meh for me.
Would like to hear ACOS though, but would probably be disappointed because they wouldn't play that 18min keyboard solo at regular tempo
And ITPOE is always a yes

I'm not really someone who goes to concert, so what they would do doesn't really bother me. But here's a setlist I've made that could be interesting.

Act 1:
Regression
The Silent Man
Far from Heaven
Vacant
Illumination Theory
   III. The Embracing Circle

Act 2:
Through Her Eyes
Wait For Sleep
Beneath the Surface
Disappear (Mike Portnoy comes at the drum kit)

Encore:
Octavarium
   I. Someone Like Him

Don't you think that's a bit heavy for the average prog fan?  :lol :rollin

But seriously that's a pretty unique idea ;)

You wouldn't want to see/hear both drummers play together? Not even for a few songs?

Another possibility might be to have Mangini play the first set, Portnoy play the first two or three songs (maybe more, depending on length) of the second set, both drummers play the rest except for the encore, which would, again, be played without Portnoy.

Cool, yeah I definitely want to hear that happen - at the very least a few Mangini-era songs!!!

No.

Just fan favourites for me.  Mike Portnoy would definitely want to do the 12 steps thing but they are not my favourite songs by any means and to hear them one after the other would be a little bit monotonous as they are all very similar in atmosphere.  Not saying I wouldn't still be first in line for it but would not be something I'd choose.

After saying all that I would like to hear The Glass Prison again as they haven't played it since that tour have they?

They played it on the TOT tour, and on Gigantour in 2005, I think? Not since then that I'm aware of though.

And I wouldn't say every song in the 12SS is similar in atmosphere. TGP/TDS/TSF are indeed similar, but TROAE is a straight ahead rocker, and Repentance doesn't even require explanation.

I was thinking about an MP reunion last night.  To me, the best way would be to have a Liquid Tension Experiment 20 or 25-year reunion show or nini-tour before anything DT-related would ever be considered.

I think that's the most likely scenario either way. One can daydream, of course, but I don't think the band would be happy to have him in for a full set (or even a full section of the show). Maybe even he wouldn't like that a lot, too weird.
