A warning about reproducing magazine articles:

If the article is available for free online, then I'm not too fussed about posting full translations here. But if it's from a paid magazine, then full reproductions or translations shouldn't really be posted here. Explaining any tidbits or key points (as others have done) is absolutely fine, but the full content is the property of the magazine and it's not fair on them to just post it for all to see.

I've no idea if that French one is a paid magazine or not; my point was a general one.

It's not just "not fair", it's actually copyright infringment. That WOULD go for free magazines as well - copying full text from one site to another is strictly speaking copyright infringment.

ariich

True, though less common because you can just link to the site, which is what normally happens and I would expect people to do that.

I was expecting that with 130+ minutes of music, he'd have to delegate some lyrical duties for sure, so that's a huge workload for one person, on top of writing the music too.
The album is good movie length, so that should well and truly be able to tell the whole story. :lol

Didn't the RS interview say that he spent a whole year writing it ?

- JP says DT is related more with a "rebel" than being part of a "empire', but there will be some surprises on the album because things will not be black and white on the story.

Good to know.. :tup :|

Kotowboy

Things will not be black and white on the album...

Except the piano :neverusethis:

The whole creative process seems so different from any other DT album, it actually makes me very excited.

- The scenario for the shows will be impressive, with 3D projections

Do you know what he means when he says 3D projections? What kind of 3D, do we need 3D glasses?

:corn i'm still waiting the great week...

The week ending the 29th will be the great week.

I think...

I hope...

Unless...

For those of you that have seen DT live without choir or orchestra, how did they play songs like, OTBOA,IT and BAI?  Did they have recorded tapes or played without.

thosava

I saw them last tour without orchestra, and everything sounded like on the albums. Mid section in Illumination Theory was a tape, with a video in the background (the band went off stage).

noxon

3D projection is just a term for a special technique of project where you take the surface of what you display your image on into account.

One of the best examples I know of for this is:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lX6JcybgDFo

You'll often see it used in sports:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5cRoQgQzdw

The coolest ones are where you see existing buildings get transformed:

thosava

Oh, cool. I was a little worried. I'm going to the show with my step-brother who only has one eye, and therefore can't experience 3D videos and stuff like that. (IMAX 3D for example)

BlackInk

Dream Theater invented fully functional Star Wars three dimensional holograms.

Guys!!!!!  I've stuck in my chair from the pop corn I ate all this week! HELP!

Come on guys, he's hardly transcribing it word for word, just giving us the gist of what was said. Plus the fact the magazine is in French. How many French people are in this thread who were intending to buy this magazine and have now decided against it? I would say the vast majority are not French speakers and therefore the magazine are not losing out on much potential revenue here.

On the subject of lyrics, I think it makes sense for JP to have taken control of this if it is his baby. Do enjoy Myung's lyrics but can't say I am devastated by James' lack of contribution. I love the guy as a singer and always defend him but can't honestly say his lyrics have ever done anything for me.

It is more of a surprise that the music is exclusively JP/JR. I do get the impression that they are the main composers anyway but strange for the others to have no input at all. It does seem very much to be a JP project but he would get Jordan involved for the more orchestral side of things as that seems to be his area. Anyway the consensus on here from those who have heard stuff is that this is excellent so am really looking forward to hearing more.

Oh yeah, and thanks to the guy for translating the interview, good of you to "take the time".

Let's just hope John Petrucci doesn't turn into Roger Waters.

I was never into JM lyrics :dunno:

The lyrics to Fatal Tragedy are no better or worse than anything else on SFAM...

That's not a very representative song given that he was restricted to a narrow part of a story, which doesn't seem like something that works for JM's creative process and writing style. That said, I don't think he's significantly better than anyone else in the band for lyrics.

Good point, and it should also be noted that JP changed JM's original lyrics, so the final version is an altered contribution.

Unlike Waters, JP has never struck me as:

a) an asshole
b) an angry person
c) a bitter person

So I wouldn't worry about that happening. :lol

thosava

That is very true. (Even if i think Waters was a genious in the seventies).
