Maybe they threw Hugh a bone and let him do the characters...

I was just thinking what if he really did them...they would just be stock photos with names slapped on them.

And of course, fans will come to the concerts dressed as these characters.  I sure wouldn't mind checking out some Faythe wannabe's...

Bertielee

I'm sorry, but I don't see what's wrong with the characters'design. Granted, Faythe is a little waxy (especially the hands), but apart from that, evrything looks fine for me.

Dream Theater delivers their most elaborate album ever with well thought out artwork and whatnot.

Fans still complain that it's not good enough...

Jeez. Do you even remember the videos they used for SFAM? All respect to Kasper for putting them together, but they weren't exactly shot with much of a budget.

Last night I listened to The Astonishing. It was beautiful. Its songs were full of rich melodies.

Then I woke up.

That's weird; I had the same dream. The only difference was that The Astonishing was actually JLB's new solo album.

Reported for listening to a fake leak of the album while dreaming.

DREAM LEAKERS

You should get that checked out.

Hey man, I was just kidding. This happens when you wait for a long long time a new DT album ;D Anyway, we're pretty much close now, but not close enough :-[

I just remembered a DT dream i had this summer. I was going to a concert to see them together with my brother. The places where the audience sits looked very different, and when i think about it, it was actually pretty similar to how many of those nice european theaters looks. It was probably becuase i had just watched some youtube videos of them performing in such places, but it's funny how they are taking an entire tour to those kind of small places now! I can't remember what songs they played, but i do remember that i ended up being an additional bass player on stage at some point  :lol

Not everyone is into Game of Thrones-y fantasy stuff.

We're not talking about this. We're talking about the fact that some complain about the quality of the design, whether it be the characters or whatever (Noxon said "artwork"). Whether you are a fantasy fan or not has nothing to do with it. Personnaly, I won't complain about fantasy artwork if it's well done just because it's fantasy and I don't like it (btw, I personnaly like fantasy, but it was just an example).

Why is the setting of the story important anyhow? It's just dressing. The story of Star Wars isn't about spaceships. It's about the hero's journey. It's about friendship (and ultimately, family). The same is true about Game of Thrones - ultimately, if you "undress" it, it's a soap opera.

The dressing of the setting is just a way to set up the story. And I don't get it why people need to have everything be relatable. "I can't enjoy a story that's not in my world, because I can't relate to it". Sure you can. Because ultimately, it's a story about human behavior. Even movies with speaking animals is about human behavior.

I mean, I'm not a religious person, and I particularly do not believe in reincarnation. Does that hinder me from enjoying the story of SFAM? Not at all! Because the story is ultimately a basic "whodunnit" at its core.

The Astonishing is a story about people. It's setting is a dystopian future (so how you get "game of thrones" from that - considering game of thrones is set in a medieval-like setting (High fantasy) I'm not sure). To ease your way into the setting, the story comes with illustrations of the people in the story and a map, as well as pictures of some key locations in the story. And it's the most elaborate I've ever seen DT be. But I completely understand why. To experience this album is not just to experience the music. The story is so important that you need to experience it like a play. In fact, I can with absolute certainty say that if the story is a problem for you, you will have problem with the music as well, because they're so strongly connected.

This points towards a more general problem I've always seen from DT fans. REGARDLESS of what DT does, a great portion of the fans will hate it with a passion, a great portion will love it with all their heart, and the rest are just "it's okay"... It even happened with SFAM. Heck, it even happened with IAW. It's become so predictable that I can tell instantly how the fanbase will react to any song. I think it's insane, I don't see this level of scrutiny in other fanbases.

50 more minutes in Brazil! Happy new year for the ones already there ;)

dparrott

The packaging and concept is so good so far, if the music and mixing is good, it'll be my favorite.

ResultsMayVary

Still another 4 and a half hours here in the Mountain Time Zone of the United States. Pretty excited that we're only 4 weeks out from release of the new album.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like the band released the info for the record much closer to the release date than compared to the past several albums. Basically meaning we are waiting a shorter time between information release and the release date for the album.

RMGadelha

Yeah, and we still don't even have every info. One more character and "places" tab to go.

My latest concept album "IV: Timber" IS OUT NOW!
