Lack of ''the'' in album names

I realized there's no word ''the'' in any DT album title, but many songs have it. I don't think it's accidental, since there are many titles in which ''the'' would fit nicely. Have you guys also realized that? Do you think there's a certain reason for that, or just an ''easter egg''?

If it was a concious choice for whatever crazy reason, like I dunno, complication in using it in some sentences? Who knows. Or a bit more likely; "the" usually precedes a noun, but DT don't really go for specific titles as their album titles. I guess you could say The Train of Thought, or The Black Clouds and Silver Linings but when I think of every other album title it wouldn't really fit. Most of the titles seem to evoke some kind of imagery or symbolise aspects of their albums and perhaps limiting it to a certain title just hasn't fitted for any of their album titles so far.

Anyway, one thing's for sure is that they're certainly not afraid of using: 'or' 'and' or 'of' in their titles.

I think 'the' often makes a title specific and concrete, and things often sound more ambiguous and poetic without it. Taking the 'the's out of a title is also much like trimming unnecessary fat. The best example of recent years is the last Hobbit movie. The Battle of the Five Armies is a complete mess of a title. But had they only excluded the two 'the's, it would be much better title. Battle of Five Armies. There's very rarely need for excessive 'the's.

I hate when it gets dropped from "prom".  I went to "THE prom", apparently kids today go to something different, something called "prom".  You hear stage moms use it all the time too when blowing hot air about their precious little kids:  "Our cheerleading team is going to Nationals".   Makes me apoplectic.

I think it's weird that none of them have an "O'" in their names. Like John O'Petrucci or John O'Myung.
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related

Or even better, this.

I bet the guys talk in 3rd person all the time.  Yes, I'm in The Dream Theater.

There's like one title that "the" would even slightly make sense being in: Train of Thought. Which just sounds better as it is without that "the."

TheSilentHam

WWRD - Rush didn't do it until their 14th studio album, so maybe it's still coming for DT.  Maybe it will happen with the change of the seasons.

The Octavarium
The Systematic Chaos
The Black Clouds & the Silver Linings

The DT13

But seriously, I get your point. Very few artists ever give names to their albums that start with 'the'. First one to pop into my head is 'The Dreaming' by Kate Bush. Actually, half of her albums begin like that. I think it gives a bolder feel to the title.

It's strange they didn't call Octavarium (song only, not the album) ''The Octavarium'', that would be in their style :D

Theory - Dream Theater were going to name the new album "Astonishing", but then they read this read and retitled it "The Astonishing". So if you don't think the new title makes sense, it's your own fault DTF. :neverusethis:
