It can be as realistic or unrealistic as you want. I went with realistic, using songs DT have never covered by bands they have covered (they have probably covered at least one of these songs and I didn't research hard enough to find it, but whatever). And since it's Dream Theater, I erred towards longer songs and ended with an epic.

1. 21st Century Schizoid Man (King Crimson)
2. Burn (Deep Purple)
3. Song for America (Kansas)
4. One (Metallica)
5. Natural Science (Rush)
6. Powerslave (Iron Maiden)
7. The Gates of Delirium (Yes)

This adds up to about 70 minutes.

This would  have to be a double album (hope that's okay!), and it's what a lot of people would probably call very eclectic, but here goes:

Alphabetically by artist-

1) AC/DC-Hail Caesar
2) Blue Oyster Cult-Astronomy
3) Dio-The Last in Line
4) Emerson, Lake and Palmer-Pirates
5) Genesis-Domino
6) Iron Maiden-Infinite Dreams
7) Judas Priest-One Shot at Glory
8) Kansas-Carry On Wayward Son
9) Metallica-Eye of the Beholder
10) Alan Parsons Project-The Turn of a Friendly Card
11) Pink Floyd-Dogs (if space allows)
12) Queen-A Kind of Magic
13) Queensryche-Eyes of a Stranger
14) Rush-Limelight
15) Joe Satriani-Crushing Day (Again-IF space allows)
16) Yes-Perpetual Change (One more time-if space ALLOWS!)

TheCountOfNYC

1: Yes- Roundabout (8:29)
2: Pantera- Cemetery Gates (7:03)
3: Genesis- Land of Confusion (4:45)
4: Kansas- Dust in the Wind (3:27)
5: Iron Maiden- Hallowed Be Thy Name (7:11)
6: King Crimson- 21st Century Schizoid Man (7:20)
7: Metallica- Suicide & Redemption (9:57)
8: Pink Floyd- Comfortably Numb (6:23)
9: Rush- 2112 (20:33)

Total length: 75:08

I tried to go with mostly prog artists choosing more progressive songs by the three true metal bands. I knew I wanted a Metallica instrumental and I decided to go with Kansas' most successful single for a ballad. I chose Comfortably Numb mostly for the glorious solo. Closing with the most legendary song by the biggest influence on the band seemed right.

well, I'll set aside the fact that me and lots of Sabbath fans think that Paranoid is one of the most boring songs EVER made by them...because that is a matter of taste. But for DT to make a cover of it, what could they add to the song to make it interesting? It is a pretty straightforward song, with three chords and that's it. I could name LOTS of better Sabbath tunes that they could make interesting (IMO), even from Ozzy period, like Megalomania (I will not say National acrobat because it has been covered by metallica).

Voices

Well, I'm not a Sabbath fan. I enjoy a few songs and that's all (maybe that's the problem). I just think that DT can make almost everything more interesting...at least to my personal taste.

Considering how popular Paranoid is, I do not think it is accurate to say that lots of Sabbath fans think it is one of their most boring songs.  Having said that, I do agree that there are Sabbath songs they'd be better off covering, like Sabbra Cadabra or The Thrill of It All.

Other 70s songs I think they could do a good job with:

Camel - Ice (no wanking it up, though )
ELP -  The Barbarian ( even though this would mostly be a JR showcase, imagine JP's heavy tone doing those lead growls)
Led Zeppelin - The Rain Song

Well, Paranoid is popular amongst NON Sabbath fans. It is like saying PULL ME UNDER is popular amongst DT fans.
I did not mention Sabbra Cadabra, one of the best songs from Ozzy period, for the same reason I didnt mention National Acrobat (both covered by Metallica)

4- Hard lovin man (Deep Purple)

Great choice.

Regarding Sabbath, I'd rather see them do something off of SBS like Sabbra Cadabra or the title track.

I already knew about most of those songs. I meant for them to do the Kansas song in it's entirety, not just instrumentally as part of a medley. And if you're going to include that song as part of a list, write it correctly! the word "my" is NOT in the title! I've always hated when people did that!!

That's like saying most Dream Theater fans think Octavarium (the song) is boring.

For me, I would prefer that Dream Theater cover songs that are not "untouchable" classics that a lot of fans already find perfect, but rather great songs that they would have room to work on to make their own. In which case, I would like Dream Theater to cover these songs:

Tentative album title: The Majestic

Al Di Meola - Egyptian Danza (instrumental intro)
Rush - Bastille Day (in recognition of the band's history with the song, that is, the inspiration for the Majesty name)
U.K. - Caesars Palace Blues (this is Mangini's spot to honor Bozzio)
Metallica - Blackened (maybe we can finally hear some bass guitar in this song  :lol )
Emerson, Lake and Palmer - Hoedown (instrumental break)
Queen - Now I'm Here (arranged to showcase James LaBrie's soaring vocals at the start, ala Afterlife in MullMuzzler 2)
King Crimson - Frame by Frame (I would love to hear Dream Theater nail this!)
Iron Maiden - The Trooper (I am sure they would make the harmonies glorious)
Yes - Yours is No Disgrace (the "epic" closer)

I so love this playlist, I did an actual playlist on Youtube:lol

Sorry if me saying that made you uncomfortable, but wouldn't it bother you if everyone changed the wording in the title of everything?
Where would you draw the line for something like that?
What if the wording got changed so DRASTICALLY that you no longer recognized what the person was talking about?
Would you want that done to any or all of your favorite albums, songs, movies, books, TV shows, etc.?

?
