Reading through the Wikipedia entry and this (https://dt.spatang.com/octavarium.php) somewhat cool write-up, obviously Octavarium is a tribute to all who influenced them.  Obviously the Cento lyrical part is pretty straight-forward, and there are other musical tributes as well.

I've never seen anyone note the similarities to Yes's epic Awaken.  The intro definitely makes you think Shine On You Crazy Diamond, but when the intro melody starts playing, it starts to blend into an Awaken kind of sound.

When you couple this with the fact that Part II is also called "Awakening," the connection becomes a bit more intriguing.  Also, this part starts out with that Heart of the Sunrise-inspired bass, and ends with an obvious tribute to Rick Wakeman on the keyboards.

But even more interesting...the Wiki entry notes that DT used the 5/8 pattern throughout the album.  Well, guess what album Awaken was on?  It's the fifth track of Yes's eighth album.

Anyway, all this occurred to me, and I didn't see any mention of Awaken on any of the write-ups on this epic song that I happened to listen to today, but the more I thought about it, the more connections I saw...maybe it's all a coincidence, but I think a lot of Octavarium reminds me of that other prior progressive rock epic.

Maybe someone on here knows if the band has mentioned anything about this, but I think my theory should at least be tossed around for potential viability. :)

Someone ask MP, because I'm pretty sure he was the architect of the concept.

Does someone mind giving me the time in Octavarium when the "Awaken kind of sound" plays ?  Octavarium and Awaken are two of my favorite tracks ever but I'm having trouble hearing Awaken in Octavarium.  Thanks.

Irrespective of this particular nugget, I think 5/8 just can't really serve as a "nugget" too much when it comes to prog. It's the 4/4 of prog really.

Just the synth sounds in the intro (especially minutes 2-3:30) of Octavarium remind me of the synth sounds in the background when the vocals kick in in Awaken (High vibration go on....).

It's not any more striking than that, but it was enough to get me to think of Awaken before I even looked up the 5/8 stuff and before even considering the title of Part II of the song.

Apologies for going off on one here, but I'd consider 7/8 to be the 4/4 of prog personally. Often, I'll listen to a prog song, expect the new bar to start after 7 counts, then an 8th beat is thrown in and it throws my sense of rhythm out.

Mosh

Yea 7/8 or 7/4 are way more common I think. I almost expect 7/4 when listening to anything with the prog label, especially anything modern.
