Pretty much this. JR brought a lot of potential into DT and especially with an album like Six Degrees they could've continued on a really great experimental path, but that never really happened. Don't get me wrong, I love the albums afterwards for the most part, but I think DT kinda missed the boat in the 00s on some really special music.
I don't really think they missed the boat on anything, since it's not like in 00s, experimental music was especially fashionable or anything. So they could still very much do more experimental stuff even now, if they chose to... The fact that they don't choose to, that's another matter.

While I dig it all, SFAM is what hooked me. And the audio production got way better starting with SFAM...for the most part. :)

i select pre-jr, but on second thoughts afterwards, i really they are equal. maybe i get contacted with DT's early albums at first, so i have an stronger emotional attachment to those early songs.

If I was being diplomatic, I'd say both.  If I was being honest, pre-JR.

I still like DT.  Just not as much as I did in the 90s.

Equal. The addition of JR was obviously a net plus. I just wish the "Diddly-Doo, Squiggledy-Doo, Crazy-Carnival" part of JR's musical brain would atrophy. Other than that, an essential part of DT. A titanic talent.

I think that the best 2 DT albums are I&W and Awake.
