It's not going much higher though. I gave Scarred another try yesterday, and it's pretty much saved by JP's killer guitar parts. The solo is awesome, but I have to get through  8 minutes to get to it.

I'm probably quite an odd ball, because Scarred seems to have a great rep on this forum. :X Where does Scarred rank in your lists?

RoeDent

It took me a while to 'get it', but I do now. I think I was a bit confused by its structure more than anything. Now it's my 2nd favourite song on Awake, after Voices.

I won't let you guys rape me again. Your venom's not family here.

GentlemanofDread

Near the bottom. Not in the worst section mind you, I like parts of the song, but I don't love it or like the whole thing.

hefdaddy42

Scarred is a very divisive song here.  The people who like it tend to love it, and rank it in or near their Top 10.  Then all of the wrong-minded people tend not to like it very much at all.

So I assume that means that either Learning to Live or Change of Seasons now occupies the last spot.

It definitely seems to be one of the most polarizing songs on here. Though for me, it's neither top tier, nor bottom tier stuff. I really like it, but it's probably just outside my top 25 DT songs.
Whoaaaahh, ohhh, ohhhhh. Whoaaaahh, ohhhhh, ohhhhhh. Waaah, ahhh, haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaowwwwww

The lurking cynical side of me thinks that Scarred is held in such regard because it is the longest song on Awake, and had any other 11 minute long song occupied that spot, it'd be just as praised.

Me, I think it's a bit of a hot mess, and is an example of a song that would have been drastically improved via editing.

^That.  Not quite sure how people associate song length with it actually being good.  A song is either good or it's not, regardless if it's 4 mins, 24 mins or anywhere inbetween.

Scarred is a good song.  :2metal:

I never really got why Scarred is so polarizing. To me it is one of the more accesible songs of Awake (together with Lie and Caught in a Web) and probably the first song I loved from it. I would have thought Lifting Shadows or Voices were much more divisive actually. Did not like those at first.

JiM-Xtreme

I've always really liked it. I love the cool, relaxing vibe of the intro and that bassline, I like the U2-esque bridge after the first chorus, the solo sections are fantastic and the outro is really epic sounding... one of my favourite songs on Awake for sure.

Then the that cynical side would be wrong. It's a good song because it's a good song. Length has nothing to do with it.

Some people call it a mess, but I feel it's paced incredibly well and it's always going somewhere interesting, rather than dabbling in the same sound for nearly 11 minutes straight. The build up is perfect; moving from the mellow and solemn intro towards the more chaotic sound of the later parts.

I think one of the most interesting things about the song is its incredibly polarizing nature on this forum. Those including myself who love it often herald it as a DT masterpiece, while others view it as pure trash. I've never seen anything like it in that regard.

There is no "right" or "wrong" when it comes to musical preferences.

I like "Scarred," but that doesn't give me the right to say that anyone who disagrees with me is wrong.

That would be just like me saying that anyone who doesn't hate rap as much as I do is wrong.

Dublagent66

Chaos, you haven't been here long enough to know that Hef is poking a little fun when says stuff like that.  Hence the  follow up emot.

Well, everyone has a right to be wrong once in a while.   :lol

Thanks so much for the correction.  And for overlooking my smiley-face, which JUST MIGHT have been a hint that it wasn't quite serious.

Top 10  :blush

I fell in love the first time I listened to it, when it transitions into the first chorus and I couldn't believe what I'd just heard. I thought that must've been one of the coolest abrupt transitions DT has ever done.

Crow

Still my #1, doubt that will ever change. Not because of length, there's three songs in my top 10 longer than it :P
It's just a song that's pretty damn flawless to me from beginning to end, and is just wonderful to listen to.
turns out signatures are fundamentally broken now so here's my passive-aggressive signature about signatures instead

wolfking

I always considered Scarred possible top 10 material.  One of their best, easily.

It's probably somewhere in my top 50. Love most sections, but some parts are forgettable and don't need to be in the song. It doesn't work fully live either for me. Definitely a great song off a great album, though.

Top five for me; second favorite from Awake (LSOAD being my favorite).  It is likely not a coincidence that my two favorites from Awake are back-to-back; the transition between the two is awesome and they flow very well together.

Scarred has many different emotions expressed by all of the different instruments (and players) in the song; it's hard to describe the different vibes I get from the song... I just know I like it!

Tom Bombadil

Its #1 for me, and very well could be my favorite song of all time.

Rodni Demental

Well. Scarred and Innocence Faded were the two clunkers on Awake for me at first (Lie and Space Dye Vest being average but alright). But Score ended up selling me on Innocence Faded, and Scarred just eventually clicked through relentless repetition and the inability to accept that DT made a song I didn't like xD. Still wouldn't call it a favourite by any means but it's got some great instrumentation and in some ways, being the oddball that it is, makes it slightly intriguing.

Öxölklöfför

The vocal parts leading up to and including "fatalistic remedies" and "Maybe you'll leave me here to burn" are two of my favourite vocal parts by JLB. Much heavy. So power. Very performance. Wow.

(I also find the song structure a bit odd - But I don't think that it's a negative thing. I don't expect a verse-bridge-chorus song structure from DT.)

Mladen

#5 song. It was awesome to see it live this year, it was the absolute highlight.  :metal
