There's politics to interviews.   This was Nem'a first shot with DT.  She is not going to ruffle feathers by asking tough questions everybody wants.  That works for all interviewers.

Again, I don't know what tough questions you're talking about, but the questions I have in mind aren't really that tough. And I don't see why they have to be.

King Postwhore

That's why you get the same interviews and to be honest this is only part 1 of the interview.

I still don't understand why you think questions have to be "tough" or at risk of pissing the artist off, in order to be interesting and different. For example, when my friend interviewed them in March, of all the interviews I've read, hers was the only one that asked about how they came to the decision to finally play Space-Dye Vest after all these years. It was new and an interesting subject, and I wouldn't say it's all that tough.

Is there a link to that interview? I'm really interested in how they decided to do SDV this tour.

Lets put it this way. If you've seen 30 interviews all ready and none have asked the questions that you want to know, maybe those questions are not that important then.

Have you ever seen interviews for bands throughout a tour before?  The same questions are asked all the time.  I know in your "journalistic mind" you want other answers but that's how it goes with interviews.  Same questions all the time.

The musicians are just the opposite as you think?  They want to give the same old answer back all the time.  That's easy.  For some, like Neil Peart, they don't want to be in the "Limelight".  So those generic questions you hate as softballs for them to hit out of the park.  They've rehearsed them enough and will not be put on the spot.

Hell, some bands tell the interviewer that, "these are the question you can ask".

Yes, I know the same questions are asked all the time, and as a fan, I find it frustrating. It makes me less interested in reading or listening to interviews. Usually, when the band goes onto a new tour cycle, or announce a new album or whatever, I start reading all the interviews that come out, but the more I read, and the more repetitive they get, the more I lose interest, and usually by the end of it, I don't even bother reading the interviews, because I know everything that's going to be said.
You'd think that the band, and whatever magazine/website is conducting the interview wouldn't want that. But what the hell do I know? You might be right. But it still comes off as lazy to me, and I still think that having these repeated questions all the time is a bad idea, both for the band and the publicist.

Thanks, great interview!  :tup

Thanks for all the feedback guys. Much appreciated.

Special thanks to the King for voicing most of my thoughts  :)  :heart

There is just one detail though... I didn't ask why they picked Mangini. I wanted to explore the psychology of the band during that stressful transition period, but James didn't give me much clue, did he?   :lol

Truth is, the interviewer has to have an organization, a structure in mind before starting an interview especially if it's a video interview. Otherwise editing the video proves to be incredibly difficult! And that structure sometimes requires the interviewer to ask some basic questions to start up a conversation and then you go to the deeper ones when it's time. That's what I do, too ... I go to an interview with whole lotta questions in mind and bring them up according to the flow of the conversation.. The chances are though, whatever question you ask, the musicians give you the answer they gave million times. They basically are determined to say some certain things. You can't change that by your questions.

I experienced this with Ian Anderson too. I asked him one question and he talked for half an hour  :lol Seriously no question could change that prepared 'speech'  :lol

As for the 'self-titled' question... although I knew it had been asked before, I couldn't have left it out as it is very important in a band's career... And so on.....

And everything aside..... I interviewed James F*cking LaBrie       :victorydance:

Thanks guys

James said he enjoyed watching it himself    :hat

Mladen

That was a cool interview, James is really funny as usual and it's always great to see an interviewer being hyped about the interview and not just doing the job. I'm looking forward to the part 2.  :tup

Do you  happen to have a transcript of the interview, because there must be something wrong with the audio. I could see his lips moving but I couldn't hear him over the AWESOME LEGS!!

Yours weren't too shabby either Ms. Obscure

Seriously, I think it was a fun interview.

Eren Bashbooog.

The interview was fine people. The Mangini question was asked with a unique twist. The was question was about worrying about getting the right person. James obviously went on quite a bit about it.

But I was thinking this while he was answering the first question about the Self Titled. I've maintained for a while now that I find DT12 far more safer than ADTOE. DT 12 was what I expected first with Mangini, as I find ADTOE much more daring.

As I said elsewhere, this is really a great interview. Love the informal and cheery atmosphere you created. :)

Whoops, and also magnificent Eren ;D

Madman Shepherd

Cool interview.  Like others have said, questions were a bit standard but it was cool you got him to talk a bit about his forklift!!!!

lonestar

Ok, finally got to some decent wifi to watch. Awesome job hun, so damn proud of ya!!!!

I really loved the finish with Eren and James, to see the blatant mutual admiration of the two of them was very warming.

You asked him about the forklift???? You are too fucking much babe  :rollin
