I want to find out if anyone else has experienced this: Are there some of that band's songs that you just CAN'T listen to? I mean-as an example-there are some songs that are just TOO depressing-such as: "Through Her Eyes" "The Ministry of Lost Souls" "The Best of Times"  or songs that remind you too much of something that's missing in your life (Endless Sacrifice) or that remind you too much of the wrongs you've committed (The Mirror) I could go on and on...But you get the idea...so have it!

Not really a "can't listen to" song.  But one that comes close is Disappear.  It brings back VERY vivid memories of watching my dad die of cancer.  Some of the things in the lyrics directly parallel things that we saw/heard/said during that experience.  I tear up EVERY SINGLE TIME I try to sing along with that song.  The "it's okay letting go; time to leave here" lyric really gets me every time because I remember my mom saying almost those same exact words to my dad.

The Best of Times is one that I never listen to, but for different reasons.  It is clearly supposed to be a very emotional song, but I do not connect to it at all.  Not one bit.  So I almost feel like I am doing something wrong when I listen to it.  That, and the music really doesn't do much for me either.  So that one kinda fits that category, but not because of any emotional connection that *I* have to the song.  Don't know if my description makes sense in connection with this thread topic, but that's how I feel about it.

I feel the same way about this song.

Also, Raw Dog, but for completely other reasons.

I love The Ministry of Lost Souls. The Best of Times is in my top 10.

I really dislike, BUBD (The guitar riff is top shit tho), ARoP, Forsaken, Vacant.

There aren't any I CAN'T listen to, but there are a few I DON'T WANT to listen to.

FlyingBIZKIT

As I Am

Space Dye Vest (love the recent live version though :tup)
Vacant
Disappear
Repentance

chaossystem

Sorry, knguro, but of the four songs you named as not listenable, the only one I DON'T like is "Vacant"

It's interesting the responses I'm getting, because the intent of my question was to find out if people can't listen to certain of their songs because the LYRICS affected them in a negative way, not because the quality isn't there. I was intending to start a separate thread for that one. Now I guess it won't be necessary!

OK.

Hi hef.
Hey, buddy.

Glad you like that song.  Wish I did.

Probably i didn't use the right words, is just that i don't dislike it at all.

That's fine, is just that BUBD has a very cheesy intention overall to me, just my humble opinion.

Oh I am definitely offended. You didn't put Enigma Machine on there. :tup

chaossystem

Never Enough is another one that I don't like. I deleted a lot of the songs I've already mentioned when I loaded the discs into my music files. It's nice to be getting some female input. Why would I be offended by your opinion?  I'm surprised at how many people DON'T like "Constant Motion," which I do like. And while I don't think "Enigma Machine" is up to the Quality of "Overture" "Dance" or "Stream" I still think it's pretty good.

RodrigoAltaf

Beneath the Surface, Anna Lee, The Answer Lies Within.

Randaran

I do not usually pay attention to lyrics, so poor lyrics do not bother me unless they are particularly terrible. DT has a few sections that come close, such as parts of PoW and ITNoG, though none of them are so bad that I refuse to listen to them.

Musically, DT has no songs that I do not at the very least like, though I would rather not listen to some of them on their own. I usually listen to full albums, and there are no songs on any DT record that I would even consider skipping.

kirksnosehair

Let's see....off the top of my head - these aren't songs that I "CAN'T" listen to, but I routinely skip them all:

Space Dye Vest (boring)
Disappear (boring)
Vacant (boring)
Forsaken (too much cheese)
Constant Motion (MP's grunting bugs me)
The Dark Eternal Night (creatures battling, etc)
Repentance (way, way,  way too long)
Prophets of War (uh, I just don't like it)
The Answer Lies Within (meh)
I Walk Beside You (Dream Theater's mediocre U2 impression, not my cuppa)
Octavarium (too disjointed, should have been split into individual tracks)
Burning My Soul (just not a good song)
A Rite of Passage (I'm not sure why, but I don't like this one either)
Build Me Up, Break Me Down (skip every time)
Far From Heaven (boring)

Shadow Ninja 2.0

I never listen to ITNOG because I don't like it.

That's really the only one that comes to mind.

The Holy Tune

Most of WDADU, vocals keep me away.
TAMP's album version. It sounds too much fun, though it should be a sad song like the demo record.
A big chunk of ToT (album), it's a lot "non-DT" to me. Though I love Endless Sacrifice, SoC and ITNOG.
I've overlooked SC so much, but I love TMOLS and ITPOE. The rest, haven't heard so much even still.
BC&SL is an album that I like a lot, TBOT is kinda boring until the great ending. I usually tend to skip to that part.
I never managed to get personal with ADTOE except Outcry, BAI and This Is The Life. And I seriously dislike BMU,BMD.
AFTR, it feels like an old man's song. Heard it live yesterday in Istanbul, surely better when performed live but still I can't listen to it when it comes on shuffle.

Sorry sir.  I myself have a different feeling for the album on a whole itself.  I was in the middle of chemo treatments, working 4 to 5 hour shifts 2 weeks on one week off and this came out durrng that and it helped me get through the hard times.

I just don't listen to Disappear because it doesn't catch me.  The rest of the double album is magic.

Lost Not Forgotten.

I'm sorry, but the structural similarities to UGAM are just so BLATANT throughout I just find it cringe inducing. I struggle to make it all the way through that song.

commanderbob

Far From Heaven and Beneath The Surface.  Those are the first and only DT songs I had to force myself to make it through a single listen.  I alternated between cringing and laughing at them.  A very surreal experience.

ariich

I think most people in this thread haven't really understood what the OP was going for, but oh well.

I don't have any DT songs that I can't listen to. Or really any songs at all that I can think of. Even ones that really hit me hard emotionally, I want to listen to sometimes because being moved by something like that is part of the joy of art.

I'm GLAD I'm not the only who feels this way: "Far From Heaven" and "Beneath the Surface" are the only two songs from "Dramatic" that I CAN"T STAND! And it ISN'T because I hate ballads, or whatever you want to call them. I love "Another Day" "wait for Sleep"
"The Silent Man" "Hollow Years" The LiveTime version of "Take Away My Pain"  "Along for the Ride (Very touching lyrics in that one!) among others, but with those two songs, the quality just isn't there!

Come on man, don't call DT work like that, some of us do like that "crap".

King Postwhore

I think most are put off by you because you call stuff crap instead of saying I just don't like that song.

In reponse to kirksnosehair: I like your list! It's pretty well thought-out. But the only songs you named that I don't like are "Disappear" (I wish it would!) "Vacant" (it is!) and "I Walk Beside You" (I wish it would walk away!)  "Constant Motion" "Build Me Up, Break Me Down" and "A Rite of Passage" all seem to be underdogs that I'm the only one rooting for! "Rite" and "Constant" are both VERY high on my list! "Prophets of War" is kind of mediocre, but still good enough to go on my "like" list. It has kind of a "disco" vibe, which I I think is kind of an interesting departure for them, and the part at the end where Portnoy kind of "raps" reminds of that goofy "I'm Too Sexy" song! "The Answer Lies Within" is a bit plodding, but the "Score" version with the live orchestra and more pronounced guitar part is quite good.
