Seriously, the instrumental jam in Beyond This Life is my favorite moment on Scenes From a Memory, and one of my favorite DT moments overall. I love the shred sections, but we need more of these types of jams. When I first heard it I certainly thought it was weird with that horn section, but I absolutely love it now. I listened to Scenes last night after a long break and that album is still a masterpiece. Where did this band go? We need more rockin' jams!

The Holy Tune

What they did at Budokan was a tremendous example. We surely need more of those beautiful moments.

The live "improv" is excellent too. That was boner inducing when I first heard it. It still puts a smile on my face.

I agree, more improve jams.. More extended arrangements in some cases. Playing the songs the way they were originally made is cool, but expanding on songs and letting them evolve and change with the times, that's even cooler!

Seems like DT are quite into being 'authentic' at the moment which is commendable as some fans might not like it when there favourite song gets warped, stretched and altered (Surrounded 07?). I can appreciate that but must respectfully disagree with the idea. Most songs have changed for the better in a live setting when the composers have more time to experience, play with, and express in a way that they might prefer over the original composition. The closest thing we got recently was the Metropolis 'improve jam', and I'm not exactly sure how improvised it really was if it was often play during that tour as a break before the final verse, I wouldn't know for sure.

Anything that sounds new to me is exciting so I hope DT bring on more stuff like this in the future again.

Grizz

I don't usually have a problem with atonality when it's done by DT, or from the one album I heard, Zappa.
The brass section of that song really kills it though. It's the first thing that pops into my head when I think about it, which sucks because the chorus is pretty damn cool.

Beyond This Life is definitely top 5 song because of the ridiculous jam. This is why I love prog!

Buddyhunter1

The extended jam in the Live At Budokon version is absolutely amazing. It really elevates the song to a whole other level.

Though I sometimes wonder how much of it was truly improvisational.

I don't like the extended Budokan version much, so I always skip it, but the studio version instrumental section is amazing, and DT should totally do crazy stuff like that again. One of my favourite parts of the album. :tup

I don't mind some instrumental jam sections, but the Zappa section in the middle of BTL just ruins it for me. Love the song otherwise, but that section just kills it. From day one up until now, it sticks out like a sore thumb. And the extended version on L@B just accentuates the problem, IMO.

That said, I do wish DT would bring back improv jams in general, but preferably standalone jams, whether it be structured ones like what they did on the 1993 Music in Progress tour (Bombay Vindaloo, Barfbag, etc.) or the freeform jams reminiscent of what LTE did during their live shows (perfect example is the jam from 2004/09/05 - ask Wasteland if you don't believe me!).

Exactly.

No jams...it would just take time away from more songs.

Marco is likely to show up and give you a brief history of the development of the jam, with show names :corn

BTL is fantastic, in all its forms, studio or live, extended jam or no extended jam.

And more jam sections would be fantastic.  In fact, that, to me, is the biggest drawback to the way they are performing now.  There is no room for anything spontaneous to happen, or in fact for anything to happen to differentiate one show from another at all.

Despite greatly enjoying the two shows I've attended since MP's departure, I agree with this point. It's their choice, though.

Also, wow, I open the thread and find myself summoned by two different users on two different matters :D
I'll formulate a reply to those summon when I'm done studying for today!

I don't have a problem with it -- stand alone or otherwise.....

Nearmyth

Agreed, I'm in the group that LIVES for those instrumental sections, whether in the studio or live; they should DEFINITELY add jams to their live sets, and not just the Petrucci and Rudess solos that precede some of the songs.

Love me some jams, but no more BTL jams.  Please.

Changed the title to clarify, 'cause I think some of you guys think I'm referring to the live extended jam. That one is cool too.

Progressive Metal Fusion

I've always loved all DT jams, and I wish too they'll do more jams in the future, despite their current direction, which doesn't let spaces for jams, unfortunately.

The latest jam is the wonderful one on "Take This For The Pain" documentary with Mangini.

And I thought the jam was better than most of the last two albums. They need more of that.

There's no jam in either studio version of TLF...
Right, but I'm sure they're referring to one of the many live versions of TLF that does have jamming included in it, whether the version from 1993, the one in 1998 or the one(s) from 2004.

Well I figured, but since the thread was clarified, ehhh whatever.
I never listened to the live BtL jams anyway, but I do love the Oakdale Odyssey enough (home pride) that I used it in a science PowerPoint.

Anyway, to the thread title,

No.
