I know, we've had a lot of "favorite" threads lately, but one I haven't seen is comparing middle tracks, or tracks that start the latter half, if it's an even number, so here it goes.

I'm excluding Metropolis, to make it more fun fair, and also counting Six Degrees disc 2 as separate tracks, but still part of the overall album.

Now here's where I honestly can't predict the results, but my vote goes to The Shattered Fortress.

Clancy Wiggum

The Letter M

I feel like SFAM's track choice should be Home, especially since it literally begins the 2nd half of the album by starting Act 2.

-Marc.

Crow

Easily Hell's Kitchen.
It would still be Hell's Kitchen even if Metropolis was included.
turns out signatures are fundamentally broken now so here's my passive-aggressive signature about signatures instead

Yeah, but I went strictly numerically here. Which is also why I didn't choose Overture for SDOIT, or bothered paying attention to the time. Although half-time could be another potential thread idea.

Shadow Ninja 2.0

Through Her Eyes.

The Silent Man and Light Fuse And Get Away were runners-up.

Ah okay.

Either way, I went with "Hell's Kitchen" here. It's very climactic and is a great set-up for the second "half" of the album as it goes in to "Lines In The Sand".

The Silent Man

I'm a bit sad I was the first to vote for it.

Bridges in the Sky, no doubt. What a song, man. Although Hell's Kitchen, The Silent Man and The Bigger Picture are awesome, too; and I would add Repentance to that list if it wasn't for the awful "aaah" section + deep-voiced speech in the end.

?

ThatOneGuy2112

I could easily have chosen Bridges in the Sky or Hell's Kitchen, but Through Her Eyes gets the unfair advantage for me being a part of the whole concept album. It may not necessarily be my favorite of the ones on the list, but it closes Act I wonderfully and to a melancholy close before the story picks up again in Act II with Home. This has a lot to do with the perfect pacing SFAM has in general.

Whoaaaahh, ohhh, ohhhhh. Whoaaaahh, ohhhhh, ohhhhhh. Waaah, ahhh, haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaowwwwww

BlobVanDam

I went with Panic Attack. It saddens me that TBP has so many votes.

Jaffa

Bridges in the Sky.

After that, Panic Attack probably comes in second place, followed by Honor Thy Father and Hell's Kitchen.

This perfectly.

TheDisposableHero

Honestly, I would've chosen The Mirror if that were on this poll. That track, to me, is the start of the back half of Awake. And if it were in this poll, it would've taken it far and away.

However, for the purposes of this poll, I'll say Hell's Kitchen.

Was stuck between TSF, Hells kitchen and HTF...

Went with HTF and I have no reason for that.

I think TBP would make a good closer to SIDE 1 of DT12 if they are still releasing albums through cassette tapes.

robwebster

They do try to build that structure in. Mike Portnoy was always insistent that every album should have a Side A and a Side B. I think he said Falling into Infinity never quite achieved that, but that's cos he had reduced control of the album.

You can definitely hear the breaks. Metropolis, The Mirror, Home, Panic Attack and Repentance all kick off the second parts of their albums, and I think they've maintained it with Bridges in the Sky and Behind the Veil.

That said - not sure why liking a song is saddening! I don't think much of Scarred, but I think it's bloody wonderful that it means so much to so many people.

Oh wow you're totally right. I never noticed that. And if any of the first examples weren't enough, Bridges in the Sky and Behind the Veil recently, seem to prove that beyond a doubt with their flashy intros.

Lines in the Sand seems like it could have been a good Side B opener. I guess the issue is that Hells Kitchen wasn't supposed to have an interlude into the song, it was supposed to be in Burning my Soul.

Also, if Home were in this poll instead of Through Her Eyes, something tells me it would be winning. And The Mirror might give it a run for it's money in my mind, because The Silent Man doesn't quite hold up by itself. I rank it much higher when I consider it a finale to A Mind Beside Itself. So as it is, Honor Thy Father takes the win, it was the blatantly obvious choice for me amongst these picks.  :metal

But if you play by the same rules as the poll but adjust the method for determining the song from Six Degrees then The Great Debate might be the halfway point. I like that song more than the average person I think (although I'm sure the Side B concept would make it the Overture).

Too bad about Repentance...
