That 13/4 riff in the first movement of The Glass Prison (the one right after the intro where it starts with just guitar and then the double-bass drums come in) is easily one of my favorite riffs of all time.

I would bet that The Letter M does.

I have to admit that I don't :mehlin Aside from V. VI and VII, Reflections of Reality (Revisited), Ready and Remove and XII Responsible. And I have listened to the whole thing at least four times.

Dream Team

The riff at the end of The Mirror, right before Lie kicks in. Possibly DT's heaviest riff.

mikemangioy

there are a lot but
Ytsejam, The Mirror, Lie (especially the one before TM reprise), Beyond This Life, This Dying Soul, Home, Glass Prison, Panic Attack, Dark Eternal Night, A Nightmare To Remember, Count Of Tuscany (heavy 9/8), On The Backs Of Angels (the one in the outro), Lost Not Forgotten, Behind The Veil, Surrender To Reason and Illumination Theory are standouts to me.

Revelation starts at around 9:40 of TGP IMO, it's not that short. Whole that instrumental section is part of Revelation not Restoration.

dugga-dugga-dun, da-dun-da-dun
dugga-dugga-dun, da-dun-da-dun, WEEEEEEEEEE!

Only at DTF...

...it's possible to post something like that and rely on the marvel that most regular posters will actually start to hear the riff inside their heads a few seconds after reading dugga-dun.

Greetings...

I agree with most of the riffs in this thread, although I'm sad to not see the Forsaken riff be mentioned yet, I mean it's pretty badass even if you don't like the song overall. And that pinch harmonic squeel..

More recent standouts are the riff in Illumination Theory (you know, that one).

The riffs in Lost Not Forgotten and Outcry before and during the first verses (simple but effective). Build Me Up Break Me Down has a pretty badass riff that sounds like something in between Panic Attack and The Enemy Inside riffs.

Never Enough's riff and guitar work comes to mind aswell.

And who says that it starts where you said? I clearly said that in my opinion it starts there and I'm not aware that MP or DT ever officially released start timestamps of individual 12 Step Suite parts, if they did I would love to see them ;)

Yeah, I wasn't fair.. Sorry, I didn't see your "IMO".. :P

Anyway, as you've said, it would be great if they clarify that... But where? I mean, it would be a very thorough question to be asked in an interview and very complicated to answer anyway..
OTOH, only it would be about that particularly section.. I think all the other steps are well defined, I mean where it ends and starts the next one..

BlobVanDam

The instrumental section feels pretty distinct from both the section before and after, so I'm not sure it matters much in this case. If I had to choose, I'd agree it's the start of the outro section, rather than the end of the preceding section, although it doesn't really need to be part of either.

ToT-147

I never thought about that.. Just a section that it's not part of a part (or step).. Sounds nice..

Haha, I'm sorry! In that case, it just needed another mention then. :P

Another one that occurs to me is A Fortune in Lies riff before the first verse. And possibly better yet, the Light Fuse and Get Away pre verse/verse1 riff. Simple enough but they sound awesome, and especially badass in some of the Live versions where the guitar has more crunch.

?

I've always considered the instrumental section in TGP part of the third movement, because the tempo gets faster compared to the previous vocal section and remains the same until the end.
