Tough call for me between options 1 and 3, but, even though I have already seen Scenes performed as a whole twice, and still have yet to see Learning to Live, I will go with Scenes.  Seeing all of that performed straight through is pretty damn awesome. :metal

ACOS/LTL

Ive seen AMBI a few times so I can live without that again, but my favorite song LTL has not been played at the ~10 DT shows Ive been to and niether has ACOS which is pure epicness.  At this point Ive also seen almost all of SFAM live too.

Jaffa

Fuuuuuuuuck.

I'll be honest: I voted for Scenes instantly without actually reading the other options.  If I could change my vote, I might go for the third option.

"Live Scenes bonus songs: A Change of Seasons, A Mind Beside Itself and Learning to Live"

ACOS & LTL are my favourite DT songs ever, and AMBI it's my favourite part of the awake album....so it has been a very easy choice :D

ytserush

Going with two since I was already there several times for one and three.

Of those, my favorite set would probably be three however.

Evermind

Quote from: Train of Naught on May 28, 2020, 10:57:25 PMThis first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

Tom Bombadil

Definitely the 3rd one. Really don't care too much for the other two.

krands85

#3 and it's not even close. I've already seen Erotomania/Voices live but wouldn't mind seeing them again. I don't rank ACOS as highly as a lot of people (still definitely top 10), but it would be amazing to see it live - I can imagine the crowd would go mad when it started. Then of course, there's LTL - my favourite song ever and which I've not seen live before. Will be gutted if I never do. Even if the 3rd option was just LTL on it's own, I'd still vote for it  :lol

Scenes is awesome of course, but it doesn't live up to option 3. 12SS I covered in the thread about it.
Whoaaaahh, ohhh, ohhhhh. Whoaaaahh, ohhhhh, ohhhhhh. Waaah, ahhh, haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaowwwwww

mikeyd23

Really close choice between options one and three... But I have to go with three.

?

Option #3, easily - 2 of my top 5 DT songs and an awesome suite from my favorite album :hefdaddy As a matter of fact, I watch these bonus tracks way more often than the SFAM set on LSFNY.

son_ov_hades

Scenes front to back would be the best show ever. I'm still pissed I didn't go to the Lives Scenes show all those years ago.

TheGreatPretender

I went with #1, though the encore we got this year did plenty to help satisfy that itch.

ThatOneGuy2112

#1 and #3 are the ideal. But it is Scenes from start to finish, one of my favorite albums ever, so the choice was easy.

Clancy Wiggum

Great question, and a difficult one to answer.

Went for option 3 because of Learning to Live. I must hear them play it before they end their career.

TAC

Went with #3. Really looking forward to seeing ACOS again.
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

Option 2.

Option 1 would be incredibly awesome, but it's been done before, and I can watch that on DVD. I don't like ACOS or LTL, and AMBI is average, so that option isn't even in the running. Option 2 would be something rare and special, and kick ass. :hat

Setlist Scotty

Option 2. Saw SFaM in it's entirety 5 times - don't need to ever see it again. And while I love all the songs in option 3, aside from ACoS, I've seen each of them enough times live that I don't need to see them again. OTOH, while I've managed to see TGP, TDS and TRoAE (including the TGP/TDS combo several times) and will see TSF this week, I would love to see all the parts together live.

Just as people bagged on TSF ever since BCaSL was released until it was performed live, I'd wager the same will be true of at least half of those who are completely against the idea now. Seeing something live is completely different from seeing it on paper or reading about it on a computer screen.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

This is true.  Another example, Prophets of War. I thought that song was great live.

BlobVanDam

If I don't like a song, hearing it live has never changed my mind on it. It's still the same song. That goes for both times I've seen DT, or any other band.

Purely on songs, definitely the Live Scenes encore. I've seen most of AMBI live, but never caught Learning to Live or A Change of Seasons, and all are cracking tunes.

Twelve Steps has less of a sense of "been there done that," and if it were a one-off performance, I think I'd possibly make more effort to catch that. I think there's more they can do with the Twelve Step Suite, I think the live experience could be so much more than just the tracks back-to-back - and on the strength of the current show, that's genuinely plausible. For a full-tour gimmick, I think Twelve Steps is the smart choice. But if they were writing a setlist just for me, it'd be LS-Encore.

SfaM doesn't even get a look in. It's a lovely album, but they've done that, and there's half a dozen other DT albums I'd rather see played in full. Frankly, I'd rather they did a cover album! (That said, I did think it was very sweet, them doing it as a "cover album" on the two-night stands in South America, a few years back, for the fans who wouldn't have been able to catch SfaM in 2000.)

ETA: Ohhhh!! They should do the Twelve Step Suite this tour, right at the end! Add it onto the box set, as a second disc, so it's a double feature against the live show with the orchestra. Release it as a massive blowout album, a four hour extravaganza, called, "Twelve."

ETA2: Indulge me, I'm fantasising.

DISC TWO
1. Behind the Veil
2. A Rite of Passage
3. Wither
4. Surrender to Reason
5. Prophets of War
6. The Bigger Picture

7. The Glass Prison
8. This Dying Soul
9. The Root of All Evil
10. Repentance
11. The Shattered Fortress

12. The Count of Tuscany

I'm sure there's a lot of people who'd hate that, and I'm not suggesting it as a live set for a full tour (I think it's too short, for starters) but I think it'd be a great second disc for a one-off show. Very present-tense, all songs new-to-DVD. I think they'd have to do something fun with Twelve Steps in order to justify two instances of The Shattered Fortress in the same box set, but as I say, I don't doubt they would. Guest vocalists might be fun. There's a lot of call-and-response in these songs, a lot of MP parts. (Which he's generally very good at - they fit the songs!) Maybe a choir doing them instead? I suggested Repentance might be good with a choir a few days back, get 'em in for the whole set. Write them a melody for the Prophets of War rap. And The Count of Tuscany would be killer - "Iiiiii...!"

ETA3: On second thoughts, I'm changing my response to Twelve Steps.

ETA4: I'm listening now, and that first set actually goes really bloody well together. Like, incredibly well. Prophets of War sounds right after Surrender to Reason, and I can't place why.

ETA5: Aaaaand The Bigger Picture starts with a similar sound-explosion to The Ministry of Lost Souls. It's meant to be!!

This.
Have to say that also option 2 has its merit...

I'm new to Dream Theater and Scenes From A Memory is currently my favourite album.  I've never heard of the 12 step suite.  What exactly is it?

The Twelve Step Suite is a series of connected songs from consecutive albums, consisting of The Glass Prison, This Dying Soul, The Root of All Evil, Repentance, and The Shattered Fortress. I don't think it's actually named in any of the DT album liner notes, although the sections are named. The lyrics were written by Mike Portnoy about his battle with alcoholism, hence the name which relates to the 12 step program of recovery.

Laughingplace56

Toygh choice between 1 and 2. I really love ACoS and LTL, but AMBI isn't as great, though still very good. But I feel all of those are a bit overrated. My choice is euther seeing TGP live finally, or SFAM in it's entirety. I'm seeing 4/5 top 5 off the album in two weeks, so I'll go with the 12 Step suite becauss that would be BRUTAL start to finish.

Evatallica

The 12-Step Suite would be absolutely epic live! I think I would start to grow tired of it by the 2nd half of "The Root of All Evil" though

The Holy Tune

If #3 was like 8VM, IT and LtL I'd go for it for a million times. But as they stand still, I'll pick #1. SFAM is magnificent by all means

erwinrafael

I would rather see an entire set dedicated to the album they're promoting. All the time. So if it is a DT12 tour, they should play all the songs in DT12 in all the shows of the tour. The same goes for the next album.
