How would you imagine a movie in which Dream Theater do the soundtrack?

I just saw this JLB's interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhGukovYoLQ

It has his little good things, but in general it's fairly common.. Yet, at 5:26 (at 4:57 the question that actually refers to FAS) James mentioned something I've never thought or imagined about Dream Theater, or considered as a possibility at all.. He said this: "... But definitely, we've always felt that, if given the opportunity, we can always do a soundtrack for a movie..."

So, how would you imagine this notional movie?.. How would you imagine the soundtrack itself?.. Even the actors, directors, and, most important of all, musicians/orchestra that DT would work with to compose/perform the hypothetical movie soundtrack..?

I think it would be pretty cool for them to do. SFaM definitely can give you an idea of what a soundtrack might sound like, but I think a real movie soundtrack would be different enough, and something new for the band to try.

That said, the idea is nothing new. I can't remember how many years ago it was, but there was a period of time (perhaps around 1996-1998) where there had been some discussion of them doing a soundtrack for an Italian(?) film, but that never got off the ground.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

This is the first time I hear of it. Was it any serious? Or at least, did it sound like serious talking?

I could definitely see JR doing something like that, I don't know about the whole band though, DT music is usually too "invasive" for a movie I think, in a movie most of the music plays a background role for the most part only to jump in at specific times. Some ballads or songs like Dissapear, the quiet parts of some songs(like ITPOE pt 2 first or second minute or so), IT easter egg lend themselves better, but DT standard metal style would be hard to fit in a movie I think(unless it's a Rob Zombie kind of thing :P). But I'd really like to see what they come up if they were given a chance, they have the chops to pull it off, I don't doubt that.

Don't have time to check, but I don't think it ever got to the "serious" stage, although I'm sure there was some discussion over the matter for a period of time, or else they probably would've never said anything about it publicly. If you have the old IaW fanzines, I think you can find some mention of it in one (or more) of the issues.

To answer the question of the threat though, I think DT is a diverse enough band that they could score pretty much any type of movie. But if I had to see a movie scored by DT, I'd rather it wasn't some down to earth drama about an abusive family or something like that. Considering how heavy and intense they could be, I could definitely see them scoring an action epic, something along the lines of Aeon Flux. Something that would allow for piano, strings and other orchestral elements, but at the same time, something that would allow for some badass distorted guitar and chaotic instrumental sections as well.

So ideally, the movie would have to exercise an abundance of imagination, and not pigeon hole itself into being "a certain type" of picture. Frankly, I think we don't hear enough Metal in soundtracks these days.

I would want them to do a soundtrack like Pink Floyd's Obscured By Clouds. The songs have nothing to do with the movie and are just used at random, essentially its just a Pink Floyd album that got used in a movie. Dream Theater should do that.

Definitely The History of Trunks as stated above.  That worked amazingly well, and I think if they did score a movie they'd be better off doing an animated one.  Something anime-ish aimed at the shonen crowd.  Their music is too high energy for most other things.  They could of course tone it down, but then that wouldn't really be DT so much anymore.  An action oriented video game would work well also.  I've always thought they'd do pretty well doing the soundtrack for a "warriors" (dynasty, samurai, etc) game.  :D

That all said, they should send in some music for the Transformers 5 soundtrack so I can stop having to listen to Linkin Park every time I watch one (they aren't the best movies but they are TF so I'm obligated by childhood...)

DT should score a scifi movie, with a combination of pure orchestral, orchestral metal, and some cool electronic-y stuff from JR.

This is my vision for the ending of Illumination Theory:

- The main song would end as the movie ends; fade to black as the final chord fades out.

- During the silence, text would appear on screen, like "*Character* went on to become a teacher", for example.

- The hidden track would soundtrack the slow-rolling credit sequence, maybe with a seashore backdrop.

I have actually thought about this very thing many times.  To me, it would have to be a movie largely based in a fantasy or dream world, maybe in the mind of someone in a coma, or going mad.  Every song would be a DT song, and would frame the movie, as well as tell parts of the story.

Nearmyth

SDOIT second disc almost sounds like it could be a movie soundtrack

red barchetta

By hearing False awakening suite, it's easy to imagine a pursuit of good and bad guys, sort of a James Bond movie.

Lucidity

There is nothing that would make me happier than Dream Theater scoring a whole film. I'd probably have to watch it in theaters six times.

Well, I just woke up from a certain dream I've had. In this dream, I went to the movies, to see a movie that featured music by Dreah Theater. It consisted of Pre-existing music from DT12 as well as new material made especially for the movie, and let me tell you...

This movie was a 2 parter, with each of the parts consisting of 2 hours. It was Anime, and very beautifully animated, like a Miyazaki film, but much more abstract. The plot was a bit contrived and it was very artsy and I didn't understand any of what was going on at all. But it was impossible to look away just because of how interesting the visuals accompanied by Dream Theater's music were.
When part 1 ended and the credits rolled, I was treated to a brand new DT song with some KILLER vocals by LaBrie. I woke up just when part 2 started.
But yeah, thinking about it, that would be the perfect kind of movie for DT, long, artsy, abstract, confusing, visually beautiful.

Accelerando

I would imagine them scoring a David Fincher movie for some reason

ToT-147

That was intense..

I think that was the kind of answer I was expecting from the begining.. Some original and far from common movie.. And it came to you in a DREAM!!.. That's why your description is so appropriate..

It remind me a dream I had once, before ADTOE came out.. I just heard a new song, one that JLB started to sing right at the begining of it, surpassing the Fatal Tragedy's record.. Now I think about it.. He never starts an epic song.. Anyway.. I digress.. Great answer! :tup

THAT would be even more epic.. I'd prefer, though, Nolan.. It would be his (and THE) best movie ever.. :hefdaddy
