I am new to Dream Theater and this forum, and trying to read some of these threads is almost impossible.  I have no idea what these abbreviatons are.  Can you guys please provide a list of songs and albums and what they are commonly referred to as on here.  Thanks.

This is what you're looking for, mate. Also, don't sweat it. You'll get used to them pretty quickly.

billybobjoe1881

Thanks, I'll have to save that thread.

ThatOneGuy2112

No problem, and welcome to the forum!

Invisible

"Welcome to the family" :P And don't worry, I complained about the exact same thing on my first post here(especially on some obscure releases like LiT - Live in Tokyo), and now I find myself using those abbreviations :lol, it'll get easier over a few weeks, trust me ;).

Rodni Demental

Oh I know exactly what you mean... But you get used to it.  I deliberately avoided using them at first because I wanted to be clear about what I was talking about but the more you post the more you can't be bothered and most of us mostly understand what we're on about by this point. Although in fairness, I admit it's probably a bad habit because these abbreviations only make sense here, infact some of them can mean very different things in other places too.  :lol

Another_Won

We were fine until they decided to come out with a self titled album.  It really screwed up our whole system :lol

jonnybaxy

DT12 DTDT DT/ST and an early one... The Purple Album.

It really was a confusing time.

ThatOneGuy2112

One abbreviation that I've seen rarely used but still think is ridiculous is F for Forsaken. That's one I just can't get behind.

Rodni Demental

Yeah, there's a couple of songs where I sit there for a second, and almost type a letter, then I realise how ridiculous it looks so I type the full song name. Scarred, Forsaken, Disappear, Eve, Lie, Misunderstood, Repentance, Outcry, Wither. Practically all the one word titles. I've sometimes gone to put O for Octavarium but then I remember 8VM seems much tidier .

I also get pretty confused when people start abbreviating Majesty demos like: AV, YM, MotT, VS, TF, AW. It's like what the hell do those mean..?  :lol

If you're too lazy to type out Eve and Lie, that's a problem. :lol

Rodni Demental

Considering Lie+Eve is still shorter than the likes of: TOWHTSTS, yeah..  :azn:

I find the easy way to avoid that problem is to just not discuss the song at all. :P

WTH is ur prob, Blob? Y r u so insistent 2 h8 gr8 trax like TOWHtStS, OaMoT and LFAGA, & yet IIRC, u'll praise SDoIT at every turn?

FWIW, IMO just about every song DT's performed is gr8, including SS, SS, SS, PS, PS, PS, SDV & SDV!!!

Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

robwebster

Sacrificed Sons, Status Seeker, Solitary Shell, Peruvian Skies, Strange Deja-Vu, Space-Dye Vest... I feel like I should be able to get the other PSes! I bet they'll be Majesty demos. I'm trying to go through them all by memory. There's APS, GS, MTHDDRIASS...

Jaffa

Yeah, I could only think of one PS, myself.

Also, what the hell is MTHDDRIASS?

...I'm ashamed that I know this.

Ah, right.  Thanks.  Heard of it a few times, but I would have never thought of it.

Nope. Perfect Strangers and Paradigm Shift.

And I can't believe I forgot HY, HY, AD and AD!!!

[troll]Actually, it's Status Seeker, Solitary Shell and Sacrificed Sons[/troll]

Paradigm Shift and Perfect Strangers are not DT songs :P.

Also the others are Hollow Years and... Hey You? :-\

Some of these are borderline ridiculous, like TAMP(on), luckily Illumination Theory doesn't have a "the", otherwise puns involving these two would be catastrofic :P.

Yep. Never seen anyone abbreviate those, since they're not DT, and I wouldn't even think of them.
And when I see SS, I only think of Sacrificed Sons. Status Seeker isn't discussed much, and Solitary Shell is part of SDOIT.

Solitary Shell is part of SDOIT.

Fair enough, but that doesn't mean it can't be discussed on its own, especially since it was released as a standalone song on Greatest Hit.

I didn't mean it that way, I just mean it's usually discussed as part of SDOIT discussion, so if you said SS on its own without that context, I don't make the connection.

Jaffa

Ah, okay.  Never mind me.   :D

You are correct, but I didn't say that they were, did I? I said they were performed by DT. And as such, they will be referred to in threads on occasion, especially regarding live performances and setlists (which is also applicable to SS).  :P

Owned! Well played, sir! :lol Although I'm not sure Paradigm Shift was played entirely ever and Perfect Strangers was played by Nightmare Cinema .

Myung'd by Daso(although I'm not sure they played Another Dimension), I can't believe I got Hey You right, I had completely forgotten DT played that, I just took a guess :lol.

Some feminist won't agree, that's what I was thinking about when I said catastrofic :lol. TIT and TAMP on the show is all I need!

They definitely did. As a matter of fact, they played it 13 times, all on World Tourbulence, and as of today, it is the only LTE song that DT has ever performed in full. There's a reason why my name is Setlist Scotty.

I was at one of the shows where they played Another Dimension (the infamous Chicago show in '02 where they played Master of Puppets).

I was at that show too, as well as the other Chicago show the night before and the Milwaukee show the night following. Good times. I love the Vic Theater, especially cuz it's perfect for taping!   ;)

I don't know if it counts but they played Paradigm Shift on the last tour (with MM), but Tony Levin instead of JMX.

Invisible

Really? Poor MP, they even replaced him in LTE :rollin

(It's a joke, no need to throw things at me, please)

How amazing would it be if they played Another Dimension this tour, it's my second favourite LTE instrumental, next to the perfect When The Water Breaks :hefdaddy.
