I don't even know what Spy vs Spy is, so yeah, the meaning is completely lost on me.

Me either, and after googling it, I would think if you reference something on such an item, it should be something a little less.... obscure/random.

Spy vs Spy was not obscure in its day and was very popular in both Mad Magazine and its own comic books. By the time the 70's rolled around there were even Spy vs Spy animated shorts on Saturday morning television in the U.S. I guess you just need to be old enough to appreciate the reference. I think it's great and would buy the T shirt if DT were coming to my town on this tour.
So, basically, it's a shirt designed mostly for people in their 50s? And who still wear band shirts with cartoons on them? OK, that strikes me as odd, but fair enough  :lol

rumborak

The reference isn't particularly obscure. Hell, I grew up in Germany and knew about them there.

Dark Castle

Yeah, it's hardly just for old dudes(no offense bruhs) I know about Spy vs Spy.

countoftuscany42

i mean I'm only 20 and i immediately got the reference, i never though of spy vs spy as particularly obscure..
I wouldn't get the shirt, but only cause I'm planning on getting at least two others this tour anyway  :lol
I know at the start people were disappointed with their merch, but overall I'm impressed with the tshirt options

I'm also 20.  I thought Spy vs Spy was just something everyone knew about -- and I never even read Mad myself.

Also it's a play on Spy vs Spy.

Blob, it's like you and I only read Mad Magazine. :lol

Nope, just you, buddy. :lol I've never read it. I just recognize it from other sources.

I have Spy vs. Spy books. :p

Stop being so sensible.

Everybody else must only have the Playboy fold outs then.

I liked both :zydar:

I might be the only one who thinks this is actually an improvement to their usual shirts. Still wouldn't buy it, but at least it seems to have had more thought in it than the "throw album cover on shirt" ones.

I agree with that completely, just as I think the best shirt last tour was the cartoon one, because these are about the only shirts that aren't just the album artwork. And a lot of the album artwork just isn't designed to be on a shirt, and doesn't work a lot of the time imo.
Although to be fair, the new album cover works a lot better on a shirt than their other recent album covers. I'd feel silly wearing a shirt with a unicycling clown on it, but a clean Majesty logo over a dark planet works for me.

For what it's worth, I don't know anything about Spy vs Spy, but I've heard of it many times, and I didn't even realize how old it was.  I certainly didn't think it was obscure.  :dunno:

Me too. Wasn't there a time as well a couple of years ago where they were coming out in a bunch of(idk if it was Mountain Dew or some other soda)commercials on tv?

It was Mountain Dew, but that was apparently about 10 years ago.

WTF at this whole entire thread.

OK, it's a play on Spy vs Spy. I still don't get it. Why is it 4 against 1? The 4 instrumentalists vs the vocalist?
Yes, because it's an animation that plays during an instrumental track that is reminiscent of spy films. I'm not going to spoil it, but it probably makes more sense if you've seen them live on this tour, or at least seen the animation.

QuoteDT vs DT sounds kinda dumb.
Ok, but:

Spy vs Spy sounds fine, but Dee Tee vs Dee Tee doesn't.

Obviously this has nothing to do with MP, but I don't get the concept or idea on that shirt anyway.. Why JLB vs the rest of the band??.. That wouldn't be "DT vs DT".. That would be "DT vs JLB"...

theseoafs

I haven't seen the video in question (just a month left until DT stops by my city), but instrumentalists vs. vocalist does make sense when you consider the song the video plays over.

Instrumentalists vs. vocalist is my interpretation, too.  Still I will buy a different shirt....

At 51 years old I'll be wearing a t-shirt with a unicycling clown on it.....I don't think so!  I'm going for the same shirt as you, Blob!

King Postwhore

The problem with that theory is Blob could wear any shirt since he never goes outside.  :lol

But I'll know!

True.  You'll have to make a Blob vs. Blob animation with the different shirts on to prove your point.

I'm trying to make more work for you.

NOT.  :lol Definitely not one I'd purchase......

jammindude

I absolutely LOVE this shirt.  I'd have to see the others before I could be sure...but I absolutely want one, and I would absolutely wear it.

Concert tee's tend to be special occasion tee's for me anyway...this strikes me more as a T-shirt that I would wear anywhere.

wolfking

I remember Spy vs Spy well, great game.

bosk1

I'm not crazy about the shirt, but that has nothing to do with the DT vs. DT motif.  That's all well and good.  But I don't get why the big diamond/gem is there.  IMO, that takes away from the overall coolness.

rumborak

I think I will reserve judgment on the shirt until I see the video.

Because it's a key part of the animation.

It's a shame how I didn't really pay attention to the video when I attended the show in Vienna. I was so captivated by the playing and the power of the song itself, it's such a terrific live song. I'll have to watch it on youtube.

weezul

blob i've been thinking about this since I saw the tour.... that looks VERY similar to the master emerald... and we all know how you love S3+K....

Ha - I like that! I think Enigma Machine's a Mika Tyyska animation, though, isn't it? DT surround themselves with a lot of incredibly cool visual artists, it's easy to lose track.

Yep, Mika has done all of the cartoons, starting with the Octavarium one. He always does great work.
