DT vs who for the prog metal crown?

kiwiclapton

Ok, DT would win, but whose is a close second?

Zook

I don't know, five guys against one. That's pretty unfair.

Theme Dreater

Opeth could totally give DT a run for their money in my opinion.

8 classic Opeth albums against 4 DT ones.

In my mind DT at their best vs anyone else (after an initial flourish from the opposition) goes something like this......................DT played by IJ of course.

Sycsa

DT pioneered the genre, that alone gives them an edge which makes such comparisons unfeasible.

I am not immortal, I am just a man :(

Are we talking about an actual fight to the death?

The Stray Seed

Nightmare Cinema. They're just on another level, sorry guys.

Durm God Meik Prontoy and the Indonesian Dyslexic Orchestra

jonnybaxy

Why would DT challenge him? They know '?' is way out of their league....

I think transatlantic is a good contender but it's not really the same genre, so not that comparable..

Don't see how that is fair at all. I can say that in my opinion Ghost Reveries is more enjoyable than Octavarium, Heritage is more enjoyable than Train of Thought, Deliverance is better than When Dream and Day Unite, and Watershed is better than Systematic Chaos. That being said, I DO like Dream Theater more than Opeth in most cases, but they are certainly my top 2 prog metal bands, and if this wasn't a DT fan forum, there would probably be a lot of people who would agree that Opeth could at least give DT a run for their money.

Outcrier

If this wasn't a DT Forum (just a generic metal one), Opeth would win easily.

Since when does a general consensus matter anyways? Different communities will yield different overall results. People look way too much into that and not really enough on actual discussion between whoever chooses to participate. This being a forum for DT shouldn't discourage that or give discussion any less validity.

That being said, I can totally see Opeth being runner up to the prog metal crown against DT.

;_; But I don't want ? to die. Five on one isn't a fair fight, and one of the five is a bear...

Xersiz

I'd say Porcupine Tree if we're counting them as Prog Metal ...

Theme Dreater

Liquid Tension Experiement. A good number of my friends actually like LTE far more than DT.

One of the reasons why I started the thread was to see what I'm missing out on,  I need to check out Opeth - clearly! they are a nose behind. And, its good to see DT smash.

They are not prog metal.  They have a couple handfuls of songs that dabble in metal, but they are the exceptions, not the rule.  They are a rock band, not metal.

Mikael Åkerfeldt growls.
James LaBrie is Scarred.

:tup Fucking love that song. I need to listen to Fates Warning more, there was a time when I'd spin No Exit or Perfect Symmetry once a week.

I consider DT to be more like Prog Hard-Rock instead of metal or just rock, because they have done both. And Anathema has both of those, so yeah.
