Be honest! I first heard of the band in 2010. One of my work colleagues knew I played guitar and asked had I heard of John Petrucci ? I said no.

He loaned me Awake, I and W, and I think Octavarium. Been a die hard fan since then.

How many of you here been fans at around the release of Images and Words and even before?

wasteland

About 5 years and a half now. I may start not considering myself a new fan anymore, really.  :|

Anyway, why so many accents in your latin Hail Mary?

Pronunciation bro, just as important as the annunciation.

Since the summer of 1989, when I read a crappy review of WDaDU in RIP! magazine. They may have slammed the album, but when they mentioned that the influences included "a whole bunch of Rush," that was all I needed to purchase the album. Been a fan ever since.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

1989! gee that might be make you one of the first fans around here - congrats.

There are a few like Scotty that got into them when WDADU came out.  Others like me in 1992 when I purchased I&W.

Yes, but those are not really supposed to be there, they didn't exist back then! Anyway, always good to see some latin. Used to love it back in the school years.

Again I'm impressed, nice to know that we are in the midst of Prog -metal royalty, and I do mean that sincerely.

DT have the utmost respect for their fans, and us newbies must have respect too for those of us who have been in the trenches for a bloody long time. Respect!

Who said it was "dead language" aye?

I'd say I've been a fan for 20 years.  I bought Awake in 1994 after hearing "Lie" on the radio.  It took me another two years to finally buy I&W and WDADU and become a diehard fan.
An unofficial online community for fans of keyboardist Kevin Moore:

1994 Awake, been a love fest (almost) ever since. I can honestly say that some form of DT or LTE or a solo project album or CD has been in my home stereo or car stereo ever since 1994, only Rush has had a longer run. I listen to them almost everyday in some form. My love of music may actually be contributing to my (hopefully not) separation.

ThatOneGuy2112

I heard about them around the internet. It was a while after Black Clouds was out, so I'd say around 2010, so I've been a fan for just about 4 years.

Whoaaaahh, ohhh, ohhhhh. Whoaaaahh, ohhhhh, ohhhhhh. Waaah, ahhh, haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaowwwwww

jonny108

My step-dad bought Scenes in 1999. I enjoyed the album but wouldn't have classed myself as a fan just yet. I remember me and Alirocker08 watching live Scenes in 2000 and being completely bored. We were only 9 and 5 then. I think I became a true fan around 2001 after I heard Surrounded. They've been my favourite band since then.  So around 13 years now.

son_ov_hades

I heard A Change Of Seasons on a local college radio in the beginning of 1999 and fell in love. I'm still amazed that they played the whole damn song, even if college radio is kind of "do whatever the fuck you want" radio. So I guess that means I've been a fan for 15 years? Damn I'm only 26 years old, that means I've been a Dream Theater fan almost 2/3 of my life :omg:

GentlemanofDread

6 and a half years ago, when Sketchy introduced me to A Change Of Seasons, Trial of Tears and Peruvian Skies. Fell in love after a minute of ACOS.

That's awesome! Hearing A Change of Seasons on the radio must be a hell of an experience.

I heard of them around 2007, but I was put down by the first record I heard, WDADU. I then decided to give them another chance after a friend showed me a Liquid Tension Experiment show back in 2010. And I remember really getting into them around September of that year and then hearing MP departure and thinking "damn, I just got into them and they are spliting up" :lol.

Yeah my sentiments too, I thought similar . Just when I get into this vibe of prog metal and this dude Petrucci the band are gonna call it quits. But, they had a surprise for us aye?

It was the first and last time I heard Dream Theater on the radio.  :lol I called the radio station requesting the song every day for the next two weeks, but they never played it again.  :( But it was quite an experience. I wish I had been a dj when I was in college so I could have done something similarly stupid :D.

I was aware of DT around 1989 but didn't buy and become a fan until Images and Words..................so been a fan over 20 years.

If I'd heard that DT was like "a whole bunch of Rush" then I might have made a huge mistake and not bought Images and Words.   Never connected with Rush but DT.............right up there with anyone.

Laughingplace56

First tried them out in January of 2011. I was getting into A7X and learned MP was the drummer on Nightmare so I looked up drum videos of him and saw one for Dance of Eternity. I watched it and was like "WTF is this shit they can't even keep time none of this makes sense" So I wrote them off for awhile, like an idiot. Then my friend showed me the ambient section of The Count of Tuscany and I figured I gave them too quick a pass. The first song I heard after that was Honor Thy Father and realized I was wrong about them and started listening to them more and more. That was around the end of 2011 so I've been listening to them for about 2 1/2 years.

dvargas

In between Awake and A Change of Seasons, while in high school. Many of my friends liked them at that time.

Fun times!!

Phoenix87x

I first heard DT back in 94, when my Uncle used to listen to them all the time, but I didn't become a fan myself until 2003 with TOT.

Absolutely the right album at the right time, and from 2003 until 2006, they were the only band I listened to.

PROGdrummer

Holy shit, I didnt realize it was 5 years ago when I first got into Dream Theater until I really thought about it. Really only feels like 2 years.

Zyzzyva17

I've been a fan for 5 years now. I was also one of "those" people who first heard of DT from Rock Band.

This sums it up for me as well...

Volante99

About ten years.

I was a guitar player in high school and was obsessed with bands like Metallica, Zeppelin, Floyd, the usual hair metal suspects. I had heard snippets of their songs initially dismissed them as a boring geezer prog band, like Marillion, or some heavier version of Yes. Music I could respect, but wasn't exactly my thing at the time.

Then one day while hanging out at a the local guitar shop down the street, I heard some of the craziest drumming and guitar playing I'd ever heard over the shop's speakers. I don't remember exactly what song it was but I think it was from the first disc of SDoIT. I asked the worker at the shop who was playing. Dream Theater.

I quickly went to Best Buy and picked up I&W and Awake. I specifically remember first pushing play on I&W and hearing James shout out "Watch the sparrow falling!" on Pull Me Under and being hooked ever since.

BlobVanDam

Since early 2003 with SDOIT, so 11 years now. And I've been a part of this forum (at least, the same community) since early 2005, so that's 9 years. Good times!

Always weird when you consider yourself a new fan and realize you've been a fan 10 years longer than most people. Getting old is a weird feeling. You feel permanently 18, and realize that you're closer to death than to life.
